In publisher's original acetate dust jacket. Publisher's Blurb: In Air: 24 Hours, Jennifer Bartlett creates her most personal paintings, all made between 1991 and 1992. Here, in each work, the unflinching presence of time is carefully, conspicuously monitored by a clock - light gray for day, dark gray for night. But motifs, color combinations, even certain images variously recur throughout the 24 paintings, shaking us up, causing us to realize that even the most seemingly casual, intimate scenes (a child's bedroom, a bathroom, the garden fish...

The Likes of Us
Located in New York, NY
Maya Hayuk The Likes of Us, 2017 Screenprint with spray paint in colors on Arches paper Signed, numbered 91/100, dated, and titled in pencil along lower edge. Accompanied by COA hand signed by the artist. 20 × 15 inches Unframed This work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the artist. Excellent condition. Published by the artist; Printed by Haven Press, Brooklyn, New York More about Maya Hayuk: Maya Hayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with an extensive background in a wide range of generative art and social practices. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike. Her large-scale, improvised murals speak to the artist’s obsession with symmetry, “perfect imperfection” and outer/ inner space. Her works look to expanding consciousness and perception to find patterns and interconnectivity. Ultimately, the traditional and the contemporary blend into new harmonic, dissonant, optimistic, experimental compositions. Hayuk considers her studio painting and mural practices as both inversely relational and symbiotic. Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including FRAC Museum in Dunkerque, FR (2019), The Ukrainian Museum New York (2017), The Bowery Wall, NY (2014), The Hammer Museum, LA (2013), The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada (2013), Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2012); Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York (2011); Musee E.A.V., Rio De Janiero, Brazil (2011); Matucana Artspace, Santiago, Chile (2009); Democratic National Convention, Denver, Colorado (2008); and Monster Island, Brooklyn, New York (2005-2011). Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as Streetopia, The Luggage Store, San Francisco (2012); Black Light & Outer Space, Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn, New York (2011); Rojo Nova, Museum of Image and Sound, Sao Paolo, Brazil (2010); Contemporary Art 2010, Ukrainian Institute of America, New York (2010); Sous l’es bombs, Musee International des Arts Modeste, Sete, France (2007); The Zine Unbound: Kults, Werewolves, and Sarcastic Hippies, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2005). In 2018, Hayuk gave a TEDx Talk from The Center of Art and Design (CAD) in Brussels, Belgium, which recounts the arc of her developing career. Maya Hayuk’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally including FRAC Museum (FR), The Ukrainian Museum (US), The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art (Brussels, Belgium), The Embassy of the United States of America (Sanaa, Yemen), The Embassy of the United States of America Residence (Costa Rica), MOCA Jacksonville (FL), The Ullens Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), The Dean Collection (US) and Wayne Coyne...

Alexander Liberman book, hand signed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose
Located in New York, NY
Alexander Liberman, hand signed and inscribed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose, and accompanied by a separate hand signed note, 1981 Hardback monograph (hand signed and inscribed by Alexander Liberman as well as art historian Barbara Rose), plus accompanied by a separate handwritten card signed by Liberman in the original envelope Warmly signed and inscribed on the monograph and card by Alexander Liberman and hand signed by Barbara Rose on the first front end page 13 1/4 × 12 1/4 × 1 3/4 inches A unique and memorable gift for any collector or fan of the sculptor Alexander Liberman! This lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket is warmly signed and inscribed on the first front end page by both Alexander Liberman and the author, art historian, Barbara Rose, and it is accompanied by a separate handwritten card, signed by Alexander Liberman and held in the original envelope. (see photos). The book and card was inscribed to Jack Haber, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) from 1969 to 1983. GQ was owned by Conde Nast, and Alexander Liberman, who worked for Conde Nast for 32 years, was the Editorial Director from 1962-1983. Sadly, Jack Haber would die in 1984 at the age of 45 - one of the first casualties of the AIDS crisis, which was devastating to the art and publishing industries. Inscription on the monograph reads: To Jack Haber with warm friendship Alexander Liberman Inscription on the card reads: Dear Jack [Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year] with warm friendship Alex Book information: Publisher: Abbeville Press, 1981. Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...

About the exhibition: Hans Haacke (born in 1936 in Cologne, GER, has lived in New York, USA, since 1965) focused on "a single problem area: how the country deals with its history and national identity. More than I care for, these questions stir up emotions both in Austria and Germany." Haacke had been originally concerned with physical and biological systems. Very early on, his artistic practice also included the analysis of and reflection on socio-political phenomena. Haacke's work deals with social and political themes. He considers the debates arising from his works - fierce at times - to be an integral part of them. "Mia san mia" (We Are Who We Are...

Rainbow Signed/N 1970s silkscreen lithograph, pioneering female Fluxus artist
Located in New York, NY
Mary Bauermeister Rainbow, 1973 Lithograph and silkscreen on creamy white paper Hand signed, dated and numbered 56/250 by the artist on the front 19 x 25.5 inches Unframed This work is on the permanent collection of various institutions like: Rice University, Samuel Dorksy Museum of Art, Rutgers Zimmerli Museum and Wheaton College Massachusetts. While studying the fringe sciences the 1970s, Bauermeister created Rainbow (1973), a lithograph and silkscreen. She uses a creamy white background as the base. Two intersecting diagonal bands of color transcend across the page, and black cursive lettering dances over the surface serving as a mind map of interweaving ideas. Through the central band, Bauermeister shifts through the color spectrum; she begins with red and finishes with violet. Inspired by music, she uses strokes of color that are rhythmically smeared across the lithograph. The surface lettering, a kind of visual poetry, explores her interest in human emotion and science. The viewer can see Bauermeister’s thoughts as they flow into one another through the use of words such as bliss, love, and healing. Bauermeister also includes a repetition of words such as cancer, sickness, and cure. The word cancer emerges from a cell-like shape. A careful study of the words shows that they may seem dark in nature; however, she juxtaposes these words against the cheerful title and colors. Perhaps the rainbow symbolizes a new hope, an inspiration for an optimistic future. -Courtesy to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art About Mary Bauermeister: A multidisciplinary artist known for her intricate and enigmatic assemblages, Mary Bauermeister (1934-2023) continues to defy categorization with layered works in a range of media. A precursory figure of the Fluxus movement—her studio was the meeting point for a number of defining artists of the avant-garde—her work plays an integral role in the discussion of art, both European and American, that emerged from the 1960s. Her reliefs and sculptures, which have incorporated drawing, text, found objects, natural materials and fabric, reference a plethora of concepts: from natural phenomena and astronomy to mathematics and language, as well as her own “spiritual-metaphysical experiences.” Maturing amidst the currents of Minimalism and Pop Art, Bauermeister’s art has resisted labels due to the singular expression of her interests and concerns, among them the simultaneous transience and permanence of the natural world with experimentations in transparency and magnification, multiplication and variation, structure and order, chance and ephemerality, introversion and extroversion. Her three-dimensional receptacles of thoughts, ideas, and notes contain visual, conceptual, and philosophical paradoxes that challenge perceptions and that offer literal and metaphorical windows into which one can glimpse the inner workings of the artist’s mind. - Courtesy of Michael Rosenfeld...

1963 Venezuelan Modernist Mixed Media Photo Print Mateo Manaure Photograph Art
Located in Surfside, FL
1963 Mixed Media by Mateo Manaure (Venezuelan, 1926-2018) Frame: 12.25" X 15.25" Image: 11" X 13.75" Hand signed Thought provoking abstract, mixed media modern graphic art Not sure of the exact technique but it seems photo based. Mateo Manaure (11926 – 2018) was a Venezuelan modern artist. In Venezuela he is considered a master of modernist abstractionism, and is known for his works in the University City of Caracas and for creating the largest glass murals in the world. Mateo Manaure was born on 18 October 1926 in Uracoa, in Monagas state. Between 1941 and 1946 he studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas under the instruction of Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. Here, he studied graphic arts in the workshop of Pedro Ángel González, to whom he was an assistant. He also began participating in the artist salon of the Museo Bellas Artes in Caracas. In 1947 he won the inaugural National Prize for Plastic Arts and traveled to Paris. He made a trip back to Caracas the next year to work with the Taller Libre de Arte, before returning to Paris in 1950 and being involved with the artistic movement of Los disidentes. (The Dissidents), a coalition of Venezuelan artists (active from 1945-50) that also included -Jesús Rafael Soto, Narciso Debourg, Alejandro Otero, Pascual Navarro, Rubén Núñez, Nena Palacios, J.M. Guillermos Péres, Alirio Oramas, Luis Guevara Moreno, Aime Battistini, Armando Barrios, Omar Carreño (refer to lot 222), and Carlos Gonzáles Bogen. Through their journal of the same name and their accompanying radical manifesto No (1950), Los Disidentes championed a progressive vision, that eschewed the conservative academicism embodied by the Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the Escuela Paisajista in Caracas, and in its place advocated for experimentation and geometric abstraction. Upon his return to Caracas in 1952, Manaure set out in earnest to put these ideas into practice and found an immediate affinity with the modernist project unfolding so indicative of that era's unprecedented growth and development. The latter was most evident in the architectural and public art works designed by the legendary modernist architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, whose Cuidad Universitaria, the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela, is considered a landmark of city planning and architecture. Villanueva commissioned Manaure to execute several murals, painted wood reliefs, and stained glass windows for Ciudad Universitaria all reflective of the young artist's newly adapted aesthetic. By 1956, the year both of these works were painted, Manaure was a leading figure of the abstractionist movement, exhibiting abroad at the Venice Biennial and locally at the Museo de Bellas Artes. His geometric abstraction painting infuse his compositions with a kinetic power and lyrical sensibility. Manaure's desire to evoke a sense of the local or regional amid the universal. He returned to Caracas in 1952 to found the Galería Cuatro Muros with Carlos González Bogan, and gave the first exhibition of abstract art in Venezuela. He also began collaborating with architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, first on the University City of Caracas, to which he contributed 26 works of art and was "promoted" to art supervisor of the campus, and then to other public spaces like the redesign of the neighborhood of 23 de Enero. For the next several years, Manaure continued to develop within abstract art, which made up the Venezuelan artistic avant-garde of that time. He later returned to more traditional graphic art forms, especially lithograph prints, though still did some work in abstract expression. He is a Venezuelan Latin American art Master along with Gego, Lia Bermudez, Alejandro Colina, Narciso Debourg, Alejandro Otero, Gerd Leufert, Armando Reverón, Braulio Salazar, Jesús Rafael Soto and Martín Tovar y Tovar. His work was included in the MoMA show Sur moderno, Journeys of Abstraction— Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. It included artists: Israeli, Yaacov Agam, Brazilian, Lina Bo Bardi, Hércules...

A portable mural extended over 987 one-foot steel plates requiring 153 running feet of wall space, it is an enormous and infrequently mastered challenge to install and exhibit. In 1985-86, however, it will be on view in Minneapolis, Kansas City, Brooklyn, La Jolla, and Pittsburgh, and well worth a trip. In book form it becomes more available, with Smith's guided tour through sections, with Bartlett's notes giving conceptual coherence, and the opportunity to move from close-up to long view by turning a page. Rhapsody'' and this book afford a glimpse of a mind and art in action, a discovering and ordering process, an exciting demonstration of ways of growing and expressing the self and the world. Highly recommended. About Jennifer Bartlett: By the mid-1970s, Jennifer Bartlett (1941-2022, b. Long Beach, California) had emerged as a leading American artist of her time—particularly following the landmark presentation at Paula Cooper Gallery of Rhapsody (1976), Bartlett’s magnum opus, now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Philadelphia, among others. In 2006, the Addison Gallery of American Art surveyed Bartlett’s early enameled steel plate paintings in the period from 1968–76. In 2013-14, Klaus Ottmann curated her second traveling survey, which visited the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum, New York. In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art united her three monumental plate...

"Field of Truth III E" Mixed Media Abstract by Maui Artist
Located in Laguna Beach, CA
"Field of Truth III 'E'" features rich aquas, blues and a touch of red streaked with pearlescent accents that play across this beautiful abstract original work by master print maker Linda Whittemore. This mixed media viscosity monotype displays all of the unique skill and painterly touch of the artist, who draws her inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds her on her home of Maui. Linda works in a printmaking style called viscosity monotype, although she is trained in the traditional form of Intaglio printmaking. Her works are a story of color and mood, She continues to paint scenes around the island of Maui and further abstracts them in her studio using the printmaking process. Often, watercolor plein aire paintings are a prelude to her original monotypes. “It’s all a process, one medium leads to the next. We create from what we know or don’t know. My paintings are who I am.” Linda also has enjoyed painting the figure for many years. Linda began a life long relationship with watercolor painting at the age of eight. She studied two full years with the past president of the Watercolor Society, Roger Armstrong, as well as other teachers like Chris Sullivan, Hiroke Morinue, Richard Nelson...
