Surrealist Abstract Prints

SURREALIST STYLE

In the wake of World War I’s ravaging of Europe, artists delved into the unconscious mind to confront and grapple with this reality. Poet and critic André Breton, a leader of the Surrealist movement who authored the 1924 Surrealist Manifesto, called this approach “a violent reaction against the impoverishment and sterility of thought processes that resulted from centuries of rationalism.” Surrealist art emerged in the 1920s with dreamlike and uncanny imagery guided by a variety of techniques such as automatic drawing, which can be likened to a stream of consciousness, to channel psychological experiences.

Although Surrealism was a groundbreaking approach for European art, its practitioners were inspired by Indigenous art and ancient mysticism for reenvisioning how sculptures, paintings, prints, performance art and more could respond to the unsettled world around them.

Surrealist artists were also informed by the Dada movement, which originated in 1916 Zurich and embraced absurdity over the logic that had propelled modernity into violence. Some of the Surrealists had witnessed this firsthand, such as Max Ernst, who served in the trenches during World War I, and Salvador Dalí, whose otherworldly paintings and other work responded to the dawning civil war in Spain.

Other key artists associated with the revolutionary art and literary movement included Man Ray, Joan Miró, René Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Frida Kahlo and Meret Oppenheim, all of whom had a distinct perspective on reimagining reality and freeing the unconscious mind from the conventions and restrictions of rational thought. Pablo Picasso showed some of his works in “La Peinture Surréaliste” — the first collective exhibition of Surrealist painting — which opened at Paris’s Galerie Pierre in November of 1925. (Although Magritte is best known as one of the visual Surrealist movement’s most talented practitioners, his famous 1943 painting, The Fifth Season, can be interpreted as a formal break from Surrealism.)

The outbreak of World War II led many in the movement to flee Europe for the Americas, further spreading Surrealism abroad. Generations of modern and contemporary artists were subsequently influenced by the richly symbolic and unearthly imagery of Surrealism, from Joseph Cornell to Arshile Gorky.

Lithograph II reflects Miros poetic mastery of line, movement, and color, capturing his lifelong pursuit of visual rhythm and lyrical abstraction. A deluxe French edition of CL examples, numbered I-CL, with II additional original lithographs signed by Joan Miro, and LXXX suites, numbered I-LXXX, containing the XIII original lithographs on velin with wide margins and with each lithograph signed by the artist, have also been printed. About the Publication: Joan Miro Lithographs, Volume II, published in 1975 by Leon Amiel, New York, with lithographs printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, is the second installment in the monumental four-volume series documenting Miros complete lithographic work. The project was conceived as both an artistic and scholarly endeavor, uniting Miro’s technical innovation with comprehensive cataloguing of his print oeuvre. Volume II chronicles an essential period in Miros career—from 1950 to 1956—when his exploration of symbolic abstraction, vibrant color, and gestural spontaneity reached new levels of expressive freedom. The collaboration between Miro and the master lithographers at Mourlot resulted in works of exceptional brilliance and vitality, capturing the artist’s playful yet deeply spiritual sensibility. The album was produced with meticulous attention to detail, printed on the highest-quality velin paper, and accompanied by essays and documentation that provide historical and artistic context. Issued in English and French-language editions, Joan Miro Lithographs, Volume II stands as a landmark in 20th-century printmaking—testament to the enduring creative partnership between Miro, Mourlot, and the publishers Maeght and Amiel. About the Artist: Joan Miro (1893–1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose visionary imagination and lyrical abstraction made him one of the most influential and beloved artists of the 20th century. Born in Barcelona, Miro drew inspiration from Catalan folk art, Romanesque frescoes, and the luminous landscapes of Mont-roig del Camp, developing a deep connection to nature that infused his work with vitality and symbolism. After formal training at the Escola d'Art in Barcelona, he absorbed the lessons of Post-Impressionism and Cubism before moving to Paris in the early 1920s, where he became a leading figure in the Surrealist movement. There, Miro forged a personal visual language of biomorphic shapes, floating symbols, and radiant color harmonies that reflected both spontaneity and spiritual depth. In creative dialogue with peers such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he helped revolutionize modern art by dissolving the boundaries between abstraction and dream imagery. Miros inventive approach extended far beyond painting, embracing sculpture, ceramics, and monumental public commissions that redefined how art could interact with space and emotion. His expressive freedom and gestural abstraction profoundly influenced later artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Antoni Tapies, and Joan Mitchell, inspiring generations who sought to merge instinct, color, and imagination. Today, Miros work remains a cornerstone of modernism, prized by collectors and celebrated in major museums worldwide. His highest auction record was achieved by Peinture (Etoile Bleue) (1927), which sold for 23,561,250 GBP (approximately 37 million USD) at Sotheby's, London, on June 19, 2012. Joan Miro, The Air, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1938
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Joan Miro (1893–1983), titled L'air (The Air), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 3, originates from the 1938 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1938. This lyrical and atmospheric composition embodies Miro's fascination with the invisible rhythms of nature and the poetry of movement. L'air captures the ethereal and weightless essence of the natural world through his fluid linework and organic forms, evoking a sense of freedom and transformation. The work reflects Miro's deep belief in the interconnectedness of all living things and his pursuit of an art that transcends material boundaries to reach the spiritual realm. Created during one of the artist's most innovative periods, this piece demonstrates the harmony between abstraction and imagination that defines his unique visual language. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the leading modernists of the 20th century. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 3, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1938 About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine's inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi and the Nu Bleu series, stands as a testament to Matisse's enduring genius and to the publication's legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. Cesar Baldaccini, Compression in the Night, from XXe Siecle, 1963
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998), titled Compression dans la nuit (Compression in the Night), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963, originates from the 1963 edition published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1963. Compression dans la nuit reflects Cesar’s fascination with transformation, matter, and the poetic potential of industrial materials, encapsulating his lifelong dialogue between creation and destruction. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. Artwork Details: Artist: Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998) Title: Compression dans la nuit (Compression in the Night), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 12.5 x 9.75 inches (31.75 x 24.77 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1963 Publisher: Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963, published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris; printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1963 About the Publication: Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design, an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998), known simply as Cesar, was a groundbreaking French sculptor whose radical manipulation of industrial materials redefined the language of modern sculpture and secured his place among the most influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Marseille to Italian immigrant parents, he rose from modest beginnings to international acclaim through his inventive transformation of metal, scrap, and synthetic matter into dynamic works that fused poetry with power. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and Paris, he absorbed the innovations of modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Like Picasso, Cesar sought to reinvent form through fragmentation; like Calder, he drew inspiration from the mechanics of movement; and like Duchamp, he challenged conventional definitions of art by transforming discarded materials into conceptual masterpieces. His early Fers soudes (welded iron sculptures) of the 1950s revealed his fascination with industrial detritus and the sculptural possibilities of found objects, while his Compressions of the 1960s—created by compacting automobiles and metal waste using hydraulic presses—became iconic symbols of modern industrial society’s power and fragility. These works embodied both destruction and creation, reflecting the aesthetic philosophy of the Nouveau Realisme movement, founded by Pierre Restany, of which Cesar was a central figure alongside Yves Klein, Arman, Jean Tinguely, and Niki de Saint Phalle. His Expansions of the late 1960s and 1970s, made by pouring and allowing liquid polyurethane to expand freely, introduced a radical new sculptural language of chance, energy, and transformation, blurring the boundary between control and spontaneity. With works such as Pouce (Thumb)—a monumental cast of his own thumb—Cesar turned the human form into a symbol of identity, individuality, and creative authorship, while his Human Imprints and Portraits Empreintes captured the immediacy of human presence in enduring bronze. His bold explorations of material and process anticipated later conceptual and environmental art, influencing generations of artists including John Chamberlain, Richard Serra, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, and Tony Cragg. Both a sculptural innovator and a cultural icon, Cesar designed the Cesar Award—France’s equivalent of the Academy Award—bridging avant-garde experimentation with popular recognition. His works are held in major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Tate Modern (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice), reflecting his enduring global impact. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Cesar Baldaccini remains a towering figure of postwar modernism—a sculptor who turned compression, expansion, and transformation into metaphors of contemporary existence. His highest auction record was achieved by Compression "Ricard" (Compression Ricard) (1962), which sold for $2.41 million USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 5, 2018, affirming his legacy as one of the most visionary, provocative, and collectible artists of the modern era. Untitled - Etching by Man Ray - 1976
Located in Roma, IT
Untitled is an artwork realized by Man Ray (1890 - 1976) in 1970. Etching and aquatint from the series Les Anatomes. Aquatint etching on lana paper. Hand signed and numbered. Edition 13/100. Image 43 x 31.8 cm; Sheet 66 x 50.8 cm. Ref. Anselmino 70. Very Good condition. Man Ray was born in Philadelphia into a family of Russian immigrants of Jewish origin. He grew up in New York where he completed his studies. Here he works in 1908 as a draftsman and graphic designer. In 1912 he began to sign his works with the pseudonym "Man Ray", which means ray man. He buys his first camera in 1914, to photograph his works of art. In 1915 the collector Walter Conrad Arensberg presented it to Marcel Duchamp, with whom he would become a great friend. The three founded the Society of Independent Artists. In 1919 he painted his first airbrushes, images produced with an airbrush, a commonly used retouching tool for a graphic designer. In New York, with Marcel Duchamp he formed the American branch of the Dada movement which began in Europe as a radical rejection of traditional art, but was not very successful. In 1921 Duchamp returned to Paris and Man Ray followed him. In Paris Duchamp introduced him to the most influential artists of France, including André Breton and Philippe Soupault. Soupault hosted the first exhibition of Man Ray in his library, where the famous work Cadeau was exhibited. Man Ray's Parisian success is due to his skill as a photographer, especially as a portraitist. Famous artists of the time, such as James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau and many others, posed in front of his camera. In 1922 Man Ray produced his first frames, which he called rayographs (rayographies), or photographic images obtained by placing objects directly on sensitive paper. in 1924 surrealism was officially born, Man Ray was the first surrealist photographer. The production of his research work goes hand in hand with the publication of his fashion photographs in Vogue. He falls in love with the famous French singer Alice Prin...

Lithograph Belgian American Surrealism WPA Modernist Karl Fortess Surrealist Art
Located in Surfside, FL
Karl Eugene Fortess (1907-1993) Original color lithographs on BFK Rives paper, 1966, Hand signed and numbered 29/36 in pencil, Sheet size 20.5 x 15 inches. Karl E. Fortess (1907-1993) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, of Boston, Massachusetts and Woodstock, N.Y. Fortess was born in Antwerp, Belgium on October 13, 1907, and became an American citizen in 1923. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937 the Works Progress Administration sent him and several other artists to Alaska to document the towns, villages, and remote wilderness landscapes (Pemberton, “Alaska art museum collects WPA’s Depression works from the territory,” Columbia Daily Tribune, November 9, 2003). Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism. He was part of a circle of left leaning artists loosley involved with the WPA which included Sol Wilson, Isaac Soyer, Louis Lozowick, Abraham Harriton, Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Nahum Tschacbasov, Morris Shulman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Louis Slobodkin, Adolf Dehn, Le Corbusier and Louis Schanker. Karl Fortress taught at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum Art School, Louisiana State University, Fort Wright College, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. He was a member of the Artists Equity Association, Society of American Graphic Artists, American Association of University Professors, and the British Film Institute. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946, was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1960 and elected to full Academician in 1971. Fortess taught at many different schools, including Boston University School of Fine Art, where he also created an archive of interviews with more than two hundred and fifty contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community. Among the interviewees are Kenneth Armitage, Will Barnet, Romare Bearden, George Biddle, James Brooks, Adolph Dehn, Jane Freilicher, Julian Levi, Alice Neel, Larry Rivers, Moses Soyer, Dorothy Varian...
