The present work is a sought after example of the ceramics of Pablo Picasso. On the form of a turned pitcher is a playful face with exaggerated facial features, each larger and more expressive than the next. Demonstrating Picasso's mastery of form, the features of the face compliment the curving shape of the pitcher. Throughout the pitcher are spots of brown that give the pitcher its name, these decorations teetering the line between pure decoration and the representation of a stubbly beard. The use of layers of colored glaze emphasizes the painterly qualities of Picasso's technique, with the brushy lines of the blue, the hazy appearance of the green, and with unglazed areas aged gray to allow their matte texture to peek out from under the glossy white.
