Jan Frans van Bloemen (baptized 12 May 1662 - buried 13 June 1749) was a Flemish landscape painter mainly active in Rome. Here he was able to establish himself as the leading painter of views (vedute) of the Roman countryside depicted in the aesthetic of the classical landscape tradition.
Van Bloemen predominantly painted classical landscapes, taking his inspiration from the Roman Campagna. His landscapes, with their recession through a series of planes, soft, warm lightning and classical and religious subject matter, drew on the examples of artists such as Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. His paintings are exquisitely imbued with that "difficult-to-define pastoral ambience" which helped to make him such a great painter in the eyes of his contemporaries. Alois Schönn (born March 11, 1826 in Vienna , died September 16, 1897 in Krumpendorf , Austria ) was an Austrian historian and genre painter . He specialized in oriental genre pictures.
Alois Schönn was after the visit of the Unterrealschule and a year of commercial school as a diurnist in the Treasury. He took private lessons with Leander Russ , from 1841/42 he studied engraving, and from 1845 to 1848 historian painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Joseph von Führich and Edward van der Nüll . He participated in the Italian campaign and painted his first battles. In the following years he undertook numerous study trips to Hungary, France, Turkey, Egypt, Italy, Galicia and Holland. In 1861 he became a member of the Cooperative of Fine Artists of Vienna , in 1866 he was a member of the Vienna Academy, and in 1877 honorary ao. Professor ebendort. For his contributions to the Viennese world exhibition in 1873 , he received the Order of Franz Joseph .
In 1898 the Schönngasse was named after him in Vienna Leopoldstadt (2nd district).

First invented in the 1500s, etching is a way of incising lines in a metal plate by first drawing on an acid-resistant coating, or ground, to reveal the metal beneath. The plate is then submerged in acid, which “bites” the lines into the metal plate. The ground is then removed and the plate inked for pressing. Etched lines tend to reveal the movement of the artist’s hand more than a technique like engraving, since the image is created on a softer ground.
“People often ask me what types of prints they should collect — etchings or woodcuts or linocuts or silkscreens or lithographs or whatever,” explains Ryan Cross, associate director of Boston’s Barbara Krakow Gallery. “But it’s really more how the artist used those processes and what he or she was trying to express through the medium.”
