Artist Biography -
While Knorr’s images take some of their inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, there is another almost subconscious strain to her work. Going back to the time of cave painting we see that these early visual artists not only recorded their lives and surroundings, but used art to express themselves. The depiction of animals in symbolic and powerful ways and the urge to create these images with the best tools at hand is a line stretching from these unnamed cave painters to Karen Knorr.

While aboard an Irish ferry bound for Cork, a window reveals swirling waves beneath the horizon. The rocking of the ferry fills and empties the frame with a hypnotic dance of the sea. Cawston expertly times the shot, capturing a window predominantly filled with the sea, only a slender glow peeking through. The two chairs, positioned in almost mirror symmetry, face opposite directions, also add to the story. They journey together on the ferry traversing predetermined locations across a geographical boundary.
A metaphor perhaps, about connection of two worlds separated by distance. Challenging as a situation and journey may be, there is a beacon of hope on the horizon...

Frank Schott grew up in Germany and attended the prestigious Academy of Arts in Cologne, studying under Professor Arno Jansen, who was an early influence.
Moving to California in 1998, Schott's work has evolved to include the epic landscapes and deserts of the American West as well as architectural, conceptual and more formal environments from both home and his travels.
Influenced by a number of photographic peers and precursors such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall, Hiroshi Sugimoto, William Eggleston and Joel Sternfeld, Schott's images successfully blend technical, conceptual and formal rigor with a decisive sense of composition and color.

Frank Schott was born in Cologne, Germany in 1962. He currently lives and works in San Francisco.
