This artwork titled "Wave" 1975 is a metal and glass sculpture multiple by noted Israeli artist Menashe Kadishman 1932-2015. It is signed, numbered 1/7 and dated under the main metal part. The size assembled as intended by the artist is 21 inches long, 10 inches high and 3 inches wide. The all metal and the glass and metal part disunited are 18 x 10 inches each. The rectangle part at the top is movable and can be oriented in different position (see picture #1 and #7) It is in very good condition. The large version of this sculpture is referenced in the two following publications: Pierre Restany, Kadishman, Tel Aviv, 1996, illustration of the large version pp. 76-77 Jacob Baal-Teshuva (ed.), Menashe Kadishman, Munich, 2007, no. 22, illustration of the large version p. 17 About the artist: Menashe Kadishman (August 21, 1932 - May 8, 2015) was an Israeli sculptor and painter. Menashe Kadishman was born in the British Mandate Palestine in 1932. His father, who was a pioneer, died when Kadishman was 15 years old. The young Menashe left school to help his mother with housework and to earn money. From 1947 to 1950, Kadishman studied with the Israeli sculptor Moshe Sternschuss at the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv, and in 1954 with the Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann in Jerusalem. In 1959, he moved to London, where he attended Saint Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art. During 1959 and 1960 he also studied with Anthony Caro and Reg Butler. He remained there until 1972; he had his first one-man show there in 1965 at the Grosvenor Gallery. His sculptures of the 1960s were Minimalist in style, On May 8, 2015, Menashe Kadishman died after he was hospitalized at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. This excellent 1971 3-D photo realist work "The People" is a multiple based upon a larger work the artist did of people beholding a work of art. Here, we see them only from behind, because they are busy looking at art - a clever photorealist work - art about art - catching people in the process of looking at art. Howard Kanovitz Biography Howard Kanovitz was a leader of Photo Realism: a documenter of style and fashion, depicting members of the art scene at openings, or superimposing known critics and curators onto images of board room meetings. In his particular style, he explored the intersections of painting, photography, fiction, and fact. Kanovitz studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and The Art Studenst League in Woodstock where he worked with Yasuo Kyniyoshi before moving to New York an apprenticing with Franz Kline. As a member of New York’s downtown art scene, Kanovitz painted abstract paintings, which he exhibited at Tenth Street Galleries early in his career. Following his father’s death in 1963, Kanovitz went through family photos, an experience which prompted him to interrogate the relationship between images and perception. At this time, Kanovitz abandoned abstraction in favor of a figurative style and worked arduously in this new direction. These efforts culminated in a 1966 solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum, securing his place as a leader of Photo Realism among artists such as Larry Rivers, Alex Katz, and Chuck Close. His photo based, representational paintings exhibited at the Jewish Museum show were the first to be called “photo-realist” and shocked many in the art community prompting a symposium which was held at the New York Studio School for “downtown artists” to weigh in on this perennial “hot topic”, newly addressed by one of their own. Kanovitz first began using airbrush in 1967, giving his paintings a feeling of photographic perfection. Cut out figures created using this precisionist technique were placed in the viewers space, often in front of Kanovitz’s painted canvas depicting the luminaries of the art world of the time. This type of installation was the centerpiece in the first of several Waddell Gallery shows. Aharon Bezalel works and resides in Jerusalem, he taught art for many years. “I saw myself as part of this region. I wanted to find the contact between my art and my surroundings. Those were the first years of Jean Piro’s excavations at the Beer-Sheba mound. Two poles of unity, potentially alone, exist in Aaron Bezalel’s world: From a formal, sculptural sense these are the sphere and pillar, metaphorically these are the female in the final stages of pregnancy and the solitary male individual. Sphere-seed-woman; Pillar-strand-man. The disproportional, small heads in Aharon Bezalel’s figures leave humankind in it’s primal physical capacity. The woman as a pregnancy or hips, the man as an aggressive or defensive force, the elongated chest serves as a phallus and weapon simultaneously. "Art belongs everywhere from cruise ships to churches" This has been the mantra of Helen Webber since she began her career in the 1970’s creating hundreds of art works for public spaces throughout the United states and abroad. It was her strongly held belief that art can touch the spirit of many more people than those whose art experiences are limited to the halls and walls of museums and galleries. Her bold and richly hued art works executed in a wide variety of media, such as tapestry, glass, metal wood and clay have been installed in universities, corporations, medical facilities, cruise ships, hotels, religious spaces, community and civic centers and even in a train station. Over the years many architects and interior designers have collaborated with Helen Webber finding that her work enhanced their designed environments, giving her the opportunity to create art for well known corporations as well as multitudes of residences. It is the tapestries that she is best known for, and it is this medium that dominates the largest body of her work, which was first introduced to the design world in the mid 1970's. The tapestries utilize a fabric collage technique combining an array of designer upholstery fabrics such as velvets, brocades, worsteds, jacquards, mohair, hand woven woolens, among many others. Yarns of all kinds are integrated into the tapestries surrounding the edges of each fabric piece.
