1990s Sculptures

Letters and numbers cut from a sheet of brushed steel. Hand signed and dated Brad Howe (born 1959) is an American sculptor from California. His work has been exhibited domestically and internationally. This is done in a bold and colorful Pop Art style reminiscent of the work of the Memphis Milano Group. Brad Howe was born in 1959 in Riverside, California. As a student of International Relations at Stanford University, Howe attended the University of São Paulo to specialize in Literature and Economic History. It was there that he discovered his passion for art and architecture that would eventually lead to his first exhibitions. He started his career as a sculptor in Brazil, using stainless steel, aluminum and polyurethane. He credits sculptor Alexander Calder as an early influence in his work. Since then, he has exhibited in over eighteen countries worldwide and his works have been placed in collections in more than 32 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany, South Korea and United States. His work can also be found at various universities including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Temple University in Philadelphia, and UCLA. Monumental and Public Art have become a major focus of his career. Over the past ten years, he has completed over 30 public projects in 7 different countries. One of his sculptures can be seen in the city of Palo Alto, California. Moreover, as part of the Beverly Hills Centennial Arts of Palm Installation, he designed four sculptures outside the Beverly Hills City Hall, on North Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California. The Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento, California), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (Lancaster, California), and the Pasadena Museum of California Art (Pasadena, California) are among the museums holding work by Brad Howe. His work was included in the Arts of Palm exhibition in Beverly Hills, palm trees by prominent artists including Brad Howe, Michael McMillen, Mike Stilkey, Peter Shire, Peter Alexander and Ryan Schmidt. His studio is actively completing site-specific commissions and installations for cities, universities, museums, and private corporations. Brad Howe also actively participates in group gallery shows with smaller works that serve as models, or maquettes, for his large-scale pieces. Jose Marmol "An American Marriage" Hand signed and dated Painted bronze Provenance: Allan Stone Gallery, New York. It came with an inlaid art deco box also signed Marmol. I cannot find any conclusive biography of the artist. Allan Stone (1932–2006) was a legendary American art dealer, collector, and leading authority on Abstract Expressionism. In 1960, he founded the Allan Stone Gallery where he became renowned for his early advocacy of preeminent 20th-century artists. He championed artists such as John Chamberlain, Joseph Cornell, Willem de Kooning, Richard Estes, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Eva Hesse, Franz Kline, Yasuhide Kobashi, Wayne Thiebaud, and Jack Whitten. He was also known for his zealous and eclectic approach to art collecting, amassing a collection that spanned painting, sculpture, assemblage, collage, folk art, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, furniture, mechanical parts, signs, and bugatti cars. At the time of his death, he had the largest collection of African and Oceanic art in private hands. His clientele included Robert Mallary, John Chamberlain, and Elaine de Kooning, During the gallery's first decade Stone showed established luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, César, Franz Kline, John Chamberlain, Barnett Newman, and Alfred Leslie. He gave first or early shows to Arman, Robert Arneson, Richard Estes, Dorothy Grebenak,Eva Hesse, Robert Ryman, Wayne Thiebaud, and Jack Whitten. The Allan Stone Gallery was one of the few that would see artists and their work without an appointment—a vital lifeline for the inexperienced and unconnected. It was also unconventional in its frequent showings of unknown woman artists and artists of color, such as Eva Hesse, Gerald Jackson, Jack Whitten, Elizabeth King, Sue Miller, Sylvia Lark, Kazuko Inoue, Diana Moore, Oliver Lee Jackson, Mary Lovelace O'Neal and Lorraine...

Provenance: Estate of the artist Authenticity confirmed in writing At the beginning of the 1970s, Rolf Hans began designing objects for the first time. These were small sculptures that he assembled from iron pipes with round or square profiles. With these, he sought to create a new, three-dimensional reality of experience, parallel to his paintings, which he was creating at the same time. In 1987, Hans returned to the medium of sculpture. He no longer regarded the working process as conscious construction, but rather as allowing himself to be guided by what was already there. And as with his paintings, his objects now arose from an inner necessity, not to fill an intellectual vacuum. "This compulsion has had a hold on me for decades, and for a few years now I have been trying to appease it with the cycle 'Poesie der Dinge' (Poetry of Things). The intellectual climate was ripe." So Hans concentrated on working on the sculpture cycle in the last decade of his life. And as if in a frenzy, he drew on the new possibilities offered to him by the design of the objects: "The poetry of things grows, it swallows up all my time, many things are neglected, hardly any letters, the diary is largely silent, concert visits are limited to the essentials. A compulsion arises, and yet it began as a game, but experiments were always a serious matter that demanded the whole man. [...] The objects have crept into my rational mind, cautiously and unnoticed, claiming their place, taking it, becoming part of myself." "It's a difficult thing with art. Looking at your predecessors, you try to find your way, the spirit of the times and its aesthetics influence the direction, you know about the dissatisfaction in which you move. Now, in the midst of the 'poetry of things', there is a feeling of freedom, yet closely connected to much that came before. There is no program, only a title that allows each work its freedom." But despite the role models before his eyes, Hans succeeds from the outset in finding his own unique ways of expression with his object cycle. What connects him to Max Ernst, Brancusi, and Duchamp is solely the source material: found objects. These are very mundane things from everyday life—once necessary, useful, and practical items such as tools, utensils, and devices—that have been stripped of their function and now serve as a gateway to the artist's imagination. In this way, Hans strips things of their previous, traditional function or archaic purpose and transports them into a different, new reality in order to breathe new life into them. In doing so, he does not want to deny the found form without aestheticizing it. By making only minor changes to their 'innate' structure, signs of wear, and color, he seeks to emphasize their meaning and purpose as form and to redefine their inherent charisma. The objects are worked on, forced to reveal their unique characteristics in their struggle with the artist and to make new statements in connection with other objects. In this way, Hans presents the abstract symmetries of the wood and metal objects without any artificiality and places them on a pedestal in accordance with artistic tradition. Furthermore, he integrates the pedestal into the work. As the lowest component, the pedestal not only prepares the viewer for the sculpture, but also loosens, loosens, or strengthens its connection to the earth. By raising them up, he gives the sculptures a further life of their own, a second existence, so to speak, and also gives them a new identity with a new name. "They show their personality, some more, some less, as is the case in life, or in art." What they all have in common is their influence from the past into the here and now. In doing so, they reveal their original beauty and the mysticism that fires our imagination. However ambivalent the sculptures and objects by Rolf Hans may appear to us, they never do so in a loud or exalted manner. With their balanced and simple appearance, they quietly and calmly, but decisively, enter into contact with us. In an unsettling way, they repeatedly prompt us to ask questions: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? They offer us no clues that might help us answer these questions. Instead, they give us all the more scope for associations and imagination. They appeal to our subconscious. They invite us to linger and meditate: it is the familiar beginning and the unconscious departure into the mysteries of creation. Diane Hettena was born in Cairo, Egypt. In 1946, she married Raphael Recanati in Tel Aviv, Mandatory Palestine. Went to London to study History and Art 1946-1948. Moved to New York 1948. Raised two sons, Oudi and Michael. Attended Art Student League 1959-1962. Studied with Jose de Creft and John Hovannes. Beginning in 1964, she was active on the board of the America-israel Cultural Foundation. In the 1970s, she was a member of the board of the Israel Museum and in the 1980s Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Jerusalem. At the same time as she was working as an artist, she was also collecting artwork. She lives and works in Herzliya and New York. Most of Recanati's work is in the medium of sculpture. Her works, which contain images of books or parchment, have been influenced by American abstract expressionism in their use of swaths of color. In the 1980s and 1990s, she worked widely in sculptures in the public domain. Dina Recanati was a proponent of Israeli art and supported many Israeli artists. In the 1950s and 1960s, she showcased the work of beginning artists at the 5th Avenue branch of Israel Discount Bank in New York City, while growing Discount Bank’s art collection. She has gone on to exhibit worldwide with permanent works in the Israel Museum, Tel Aviv Museum, Ben Gurion Airport, The Jewish Museum (New York) among others. She is the recipient of the AICF AVIV Award and The Council for a Beautiful Israel Yakir Award. She was represented by Flomenhaft Gallery in New York City (was included in the Feminist Art Project along with Miriam Schapiro) and Gordon Gallery in Tel Aviv. Brown is an American woman artist born in Memphis, Tennessee and lives and works in New York and Miami Beach, Florida. Brown works with sculpture, painting, photography, video, digital and installation art. The box when closed measures to be 17" Sq. x 3.5" H. David Barr (1939-2015) is an American sculptor and painter from Detroit, MI. Known for constructivist sculpture, architecture and surrealist, assemblage box sculpture collage works. Born in 1939, Barr is an internationally known artists and has created many installations in natural settings. Vault took over a year to complete. His sculptures represent mathematics, geography and structurist nature, and otherwise known as "geo-structures." This one is kinetic and can be moved around. Barr is a graduate of Wayne State University and recipient of the WSU Distinguished Alumni Award. Influenced by sculptor Charles Biederman. In 1995 he founded the Michigan Legacy Art Park, and has pieces at the Chrysler World Headquarters, Flint's Bishop Airport, the Detroit Zoo, the State of Michigan Historical Museum and the Meadowbrook Festival Grounds Barr earned a master’s of fine arts degree from Wayne State University and was an associate professor of sculpture at Macomb Community College in Warren for 37 years. He worked on perhaps the largest sculpture in the world, the Four Corners Project, with installations at Greenland, Africa, Irian Jaya (New Guinea) and Easter Island. His sculptures are located all over the state of Michigan, but perhaps his most recognizable is Transcending, a blend of bronze, steel and granite that acknowledges the contributions of Detroit’s laborers and skilled tradespeople. David Barr is the founder of Michigan Legacy Art Park. David’s career as an artist, instructor, author and global thinker has crossed borders around the world, bringing people and ideas together. Over fifty years as a sculptor, David created a body of work that includes hundreds of wall-hanging structurist reliefs, sculptures for public spaces (such as Transcending in Hart Plaza, Detroit done with Sergio De Giusti), works for private collections, massive global projects (such as The Four Corners Project) and Michigan Legacy Art Park. David’s studio was in Detroit for fifteen years until he realized he needed nature as a source of inspiration. In 1977 he bought 4 acres of land in rural Oakland County (now Novi) and in 1979 built his home, a contemporary structure that has become the centerpiece of his own art park.
