Shire was born in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. His sculpture, furniture, painting, prints and ceramics have been exhibited in the United States, Italy, France, Japan and Poland; Shire has been associated with the Memphis Group of designers, has worked on the Design Team for the XXIII Olympiad with the American Institute of Architects, and has designed public sculptures suitable for outdoors in Los Angeles and other California cities. Shire has been honored by awards for his contribution to the cultural life of the City of Los Angeles. He is an influential LA ceramicist along with and influenced by Ken Price and ceramic master Peter Voulkos. Of a similar mod vibe to Charlie Hewitt and Brad Howe. The Memphis Milano Group was an Italian design and architecture group founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass in 1982 that designed Post modern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass, and welded, painted, metal objects from 1981 to 1988. The Memphis group's work often incorporated plastic laminate and was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful and abstract decoration as well as asymmetrical shapes, sometimes arbitrarily alluding to exotic or earlier styles. They drew inspiration from such movements as Art Deco and Pop Art, including styles such as the 1950s Kitsch and futuristic themes. Other members included Martine Bedin Michael Graves, Javier Mariscal, Nathalie du Pasquier, Matteo Thun and Marco Zanuso. He was included in the Sullivan Goss show L.A. in S.B. of Postwar and Contemporary California artists including Emerson Woelffer, Ynez Johnston, Peter Krasnow, Edgar Ewing. Their styles ran the gamut from Post Cubist Abstraction to Abstract Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism. In the rich soil of their efforts was grown the next generation of some of L.A.’s art superstars. As well as contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, Charles Arnoldi, Betye Saar, Frank Gehry, Kenton Nelson, Peter Shire, Patssi Valdez, and Dave Lefner. Philippe Chambault The artist was born August 9, 1930, in Châtenay-Malabry (Hauts-de-Seine), where he did his primary schooling. Then he studied art at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, and especially at the woodcarving workshop. The established collection is known for exceptional Postwar works including pieces by Johns, Rothko, and Twombly, to name a few. As Hannelore Schulhof stated in 2011, “Art is almost like a religion. It is what I believe in… it is what gives my life dimension beyond the material world.” Signed: J. De Creeft in the rear The stylized, placid face of Ecstasy, as well as the contrast between smooth and rough-hewn stone, are typical of de Creeft’s hand and instantly recognizable. Its natural alabaster inclusions and the generally fragmentized feel of the piece are both essential to its aesthetic and classic de Creeft. The Guadalajara-born sculptor studied alongside Rodin at the Académie Julian starting in 1905 and would eventually become Alexander Calder’s tutor in direct carving. Ecstasy was undoubtedly inspired by a wide variety of influences that had a profound effect on his work, including his early employment at the young age of six earning pennies by carrying stones to aid the construction of Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, and an inspiring encounter with Inuit sculptors in Madrid’s El Retiro Park during the nascency of his career. Towards the mid-20th century, de Creeft was working within a group of Spanish expatriate artists in New York, including Vicente and Dalí. 1956, the year he carved Ecstasy—using the method of direct carving of which he was a firm proponent—marked the year he gained representation at the Contemporary Galleries in New York City. He would exhibit biannually there until 1966. In the 1950s de Creeft received numerous public commissions, including an eight-foot granite Poetess for the city of Philadelphia in 1951 and his famous 16-foot Alice in Wonderland climbing sculpture...

Text by Michelle Cantin-Reid The common object reconstructed through skilful assembly and technique; casted, welded, and chased metal forms; almost perfect doppelgangers of the originals, this is how Zeke Moores’ work appears. Upon closer consideration, the materiality of these pieces comes to light. Deceivingly close to the real thing, they greatly diverge from the original. From chromed steel Trashcans to the reconstructed Port-O-Potty made from cast aluminum and nickel-plated steel, Moores uses metalsmithing techniques to render his sculptures, usurping of the traditional modes of mass production as well as the disposable materiality that we associate with these objects. In his work, mechanised assembly line production and objects made to be thrown out or forgotten become a craftsman’s labour of love. As the disposable dejected everyday object is taken from the street and placed into the gallery, our use and imposition of a hierarchy on objects becomes apparent. However, it also speaks of the amount of work no longer done by people or often done by a series of anonymous workers in a repetitive but carefully choreographed dance with machines. We approach very differently a practical or a mass-produced object and one that is crafted. These works also celebrate those objects designed for practical but not specifically aesthetic purposes. The imposition of a new materiality gives them durability and in the case of bronze casts or chrome plating a superficial prestige. Sitting in a gallery contemplated and beheld, the cast bronze Barrier is not unlike a monument or a statue. Though, these nobler materials are not wherein the beauty lies. Happy Meal...
