Miniature Salesman
s Sample Victorian Bureau Chest, American, circa 1890
Located in Incline Village, NV
This late 19th century miniature 3-drawer dresser with original mirror mounted above, was likely used as a salesman's sample by an itinerant sales person who traveled the countryside promoting his articles, usually by seeking out merchants to take orders based on this scaled down miniature bureau, or by leaving it on display in a merchant's establishment to take orders from that merchant's customers.

Pair of Gilt Bronze Regency Firedogs, Attributed To Thomas Hope. England Ca 1803
By Thomas Hope
Located in Incline Village, NV
These firedogs (as they were referred to), while not really serving any utility, would have been used as decoration to enhance the visual aesthetics of the hearth, by being placed one to each side of the fireplace opening. I have attached 20 images to this listing. The last image shows how they would have been used in a fireplace setting.
These highly ornate pair of gilt bronze firedogs are quite important and were, more than likely, the design of Thomas Hope (1769-1831), who created elaborate and innovative decorations whose features were influenced by his extensive travel through the Near East, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and Europe, over a ten year period. He was the foremost interior designer during the Regency period and developed luxurious surroundings for his two lavish London residences during the early 19th century. They were decorated with items of his own design, along with those he had accumulated and collected during his travels. He introduced to the British aristocracy the term "interior design". In terms of collecting, and the acquisition of fine art...

"Lady Seated in Chair Reading" Money Box/ Still Bank by A. Biagioni, Circa 1925
Located in Incline Village, NV
Penny bank made by Italian Angelo Biagioni for the French market (see image with marking on the back of the chair), circa 1910. Biagioni, born in 1870, was a well known sculptor who crafted objects for resale to the European market. Money boxes (or still banks as they are called in America) were one of the more unique and more difficult items to find by this artist as most objects were basic uni-dimensional sculptered pieces. What makes it more rare is the unfortunate requirement to break and smash the bank open to get the coins out, as there was no mechanism to remove the money. The subject matter of the bank is that of a nicely dressed older lady seated in a chair reading a book.
The bank is in all original condition and paint with no restoration or touch-up of any kind.
This is a nice addition to any bank or toy collection, or simply to have as a "stand alone" unique item.
Dimensions : 4 1/4" deep x 3 3/8" wide x 8 5/8" high.
Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys and banks, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage still banks...

Vintage Tin Wind-up Toy "Clown in A Barrel" by J Chein
Co. American Circa 1935
By J. Chein
Co.
Located in Incline Village, NV
Made by J. Chein & Company Circa 1935 in New York City; originally inventoried as #258 (same number as similar looking Popeye toy dated 1932) and was named "Mechanical Clown Barrel Walker". The name of the maker "Chein" is stamped as a logo to the rear of the barrel (see image). This is one of the earlier toys that Chein made.
The lithography and hand paint are in gorgeous original condition with bright colors of red and gold to the barrel, flesh tones to the clown, who sports a multi colorful smiling face.
The toy works great; simply wind the attached key wind in the back 1/2 revolution; place on the hard surface----the clown waddles across the floor, back and forth, while shaking his head to and fro (see accompanying video with this listing to see it work)
In addition to being quite a scarce toy it is even more difficult to find in this fine condition. Often times the head is lacking or replaced from rough usage and surface rarely maintains this beautiful finish. This particular example is completely original with no restorations, repairs, or touch up paint of any kind. There is a small 5/8" superficial indentation to the front top of barrel (see image). This would make a proud addition to any collection of vintage toys or Americana.
Dimensions: 7 1/2" high x 3 1/4" wide x 4" deep
See my other listings of over 100+ vintage toys and antique children's toy savings banks from which to chose.
Provenance: From a recently acquired West Coast collection of fine quality tin toys.
Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys and children's playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketplace. My toys operate properly and are as stated and accurately described.
it would behoove an enterprising collector, dealer, or decorator to take advantage of the opportunity to buy as many of the vintage...

American Mechanical Bank "Melody-Bank, " circa 1946
Located in Incline Village, NV
"Melody-Bank" is a rare bank and was manufactured by "Electric Coding Machine Co., N.Y.C." in 1946. American made, this is a genuine and authentic vintage mechanical bank, albeit somewhat later, having been manufactured in 1946. It maintains all of the elements of a collectible antique mechanical bank; pleasing shelf appeal and wonderful musical action. The metal faux textured, green painted casing on five sides is fronted by cardboard on wood, filled with delightful images of "children at play with money" lithography.
To operate: Wind up the mechanism by turning the brass dial in front clockwise; then put a nickel, dime, or quarter in the appropriate slot at the top. Music will play as additional lithography depicting children's nursery rhymes rotate on the interior circular dial ("Little Boy Blue", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", etc.).
Coins are removed by unscrewing the metal plate at the rear bottom.
Bank is in excellent all original condition with fully operable musical mechanism.
Dimensions: 7" high x 4 9/16" wide x 3" deep.

Set (4) Nathaniel Currier Lithographs American Country Life--Four Seasons C1855
By Currier
Ives
Located in Incline Village, NV
It is rare to have the opportunity to acquire all four of these scenes at once, especially in this very good all original condition; and housed and professionally framed in fine quality and attractive bird's eye maple wooden frames with preservation backing and frontal protective glass (important when dealing with 170 year old lithographs); all are the more rare and desirable large folio sheet examples in fine original color.
The larger folios are more rare because they appealed to the wealthier sector of the population and were more expensive, thus fewer were made, albeit, knowing their more discerning customer base, there was more attention given to detail; hand coloring, and quality for example. All examples had been framed and housed in museum quality conservation backing for over 80 years. I have had each one professionally taken apart and inspected visually and examined with a black light and loop; as a result, I guarantee and can attest to the accuracy of my descriptions of each folio. I then had the folios professionally remounted in their original frames with an upgraded preservation backing (see images for viewing original folios out of frame and for confirmation of inspection).
When available these lithographs are typically acquired individually, in varying condition, and often unframed. Other examples are often reproductions or "tear out sheets" from coffee table type books. These lithographs have no tears, no touch up paint, and no glued or taped repairs.
This iconic and highly desirable set of four lithographs by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) dated 1855 from the American Country Life series depicts;
Spring "May Morning";
Summer "Summer Evening";
Fall ""October Afternoon"; and
Winter "Pleasures of Winter".
All four images are produced from the paintings of well known artist Frances (Fanny) Flora (Bond Palmer (1812-1876). She painted typical American scenes of daily American life that were used by Currier for years to come. She was an accomplished artist by the time she migrated to the United States from England, and Currier commissioned her to do the country scenes for this series. Each of the original images are toned lithographs with applied hand painted watercolor. The series of four reflects affluent life styles in each of the four seasons by showcasing grandiose homes and glamorizing the rural way of living as urban areas became more densely populated with the tidal wave and arrival of immigrants. Nathaniel Currier began his lithograph business in 1835 with hand colored images portraying outdoor panoramic, historical, pastoral, and landmark scenes and events, with which the middle class and the wealthy sought to decorate their houses. James Ives (1824-1895) was his accountant) and would join him later in 1857 to help run the business.
Each of the hand painted lithographs is embellished with script text in the bottom margin of the folio "Entered according to art of congress in the year 1855 by N. Currier in the clerk's office of the southern district of N.Y."

"Toby" Jug Still Bank and Biscuit Tin, circa 1910
Located in Incline Village, NV
This is both a still bank and a biscuit tin. It would originally have been sold, filled with biscuits. After all of the cookies would have been consumed, the tin (rather than been thrown away) would have been used as a bank to save money. There is a slot for deposits at the back of the neck at the top (see image). Coins would have been removed by lifting or twisting the snug fitting lid. Toby is nicely hand-painted in pleasing colors of green, blue, gold, and white, with realistic flesh tones to the hands and face. The total height is 6 1/2" while the total width is 6" (includes handle). Diameter at the base is 5".
This Toby figured tin was manufactured circa 1911 by the biscuit tin company of Hudson Scott located in Carlisle, England.
It is marked at the bottom "Hudson Scott & Sons Ltd. Carlisle, England."
It has crossover appeal into three categories of collectors. It would be a welcome addition to both the still bank collector and the biscuit tin collector...

Toy Cast Iron Truck Car Carrier; Three Cars by A.C. Williams American Circa 1930
By A.C. Williams Company
Located in Incline Village, NV
Founded in 1886, the A.C. Williams Toy Company in Ravenna, Ohio, manufactured this toy circa 1930. This cast iron truck car carrier loaded with three blue "Austin" sedans ("Austin" embossed on the side of each car) is completely original with no restoration of any kind, and is in original paint with no touch-up or repaint. I have black lighted everything to insure originality of paint. A red Mack truck hitched to a green trailer pulls the car carrier with it's three original cars; all nickel plated wheels on all vehicles are original. Other markings include #5, #11, and #1 on the inside of each car by rear axle; and #5 on the green trailer; #5 on the red truck.

Fan-Carved Wood Mantel in the Federal Taste
Located in New York, NY
New York,
Fan-carved mantel in the Federal taste, circa 1812
Pine
Measures: 66 1/4 in. high, 90 3/8 in. wide, 13 1/4 in. deep
Within the genre of carved rather than plasterwork mantels of the Federal Period, no example that has come to light is more perfectly designed or more carefully wrought than the present one, which is an amazing symphony of fans, urns, beads, and other Neo-Classical devices, all ultimately influenced by the plasterwork designs of the English architects Robert (1728–1792) and James (1732–1794) Adam.
Of a type that proliferated in the area bounded by the northern New Jersey counties of Bergen and Passaic, the Hudson Valley, and western Long Island, the mantel is representative of work that flourished in the first couple of decades of the 19th century. While most of the woodwork of this style that has survived is found in interiors, various examples of exterior doors and other trim have been noted, but most examples have disappeared as a result, variously, of natural deterioration and purposeful demolition in anticipation of development.
Although considerably larger in scale and more elaborate in ornament than a mantel that has been in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum since 1944 (acc. no. 44.55; photograph in Hirschl & Adler archives), the present mantel is so close in style and conception to that example that it likely originated in the same house.
The Brooklyn mantel is documented as having been removed from a house built by Judge Isaac Terhune (1762–1837), an eminent lawyer and judge. The house was situated on King’s Highway, at the corner of Mansfield Place, at the edge of South Greenfield, a village in northern Gravesend, Brooklyn. A photograph of the house, taken by the German e´migre´ photographer, Eugene Armbruster (1865–1933), is in the collection of the New-York Historical Society.
Terhune is ultimately descended from the Dutch-Huguenot e´migre´ Albert Albertson Terhunen, who died in Flatlands, Brooklyn, in 1685.The family eventually spread out through New Amsterdam, Long Island, and Bergen County, New Jersey. Terhune’s great-grandson, also Albert (1715–1806), left a sizable estate to his six surviving children, including his second child and second son, Isaac.
Judge Terhune lived in the house until his death in 1837, at which time, according to an article in The New York Times for November 27, 1910, he, having died without issue, “left the White Frame Mansion with its exquisitely carved doorway, beautiful mantels, and other interior adornments to his brother John” (Part Six, p. 11).
The article continues:
After the latter’s death, the house and its estate of about 70 acres passed through several owners, eventually being purchased in 1853 by Benjamin G. Hitchings [1813–1893].
The house next passed to Benjamin’s son, Hector, who had been born in the house, and then lived there for 25 years. He sold it in 1910 in partial payment for a Manhattan apartment house. After thus having been sold to a real estate developer, the Hitchings property was subdivided into Hitchings Homestead. The house survived until about 1928, at which time it was razed and a Deco-style apartment house with the address 2301 Kings Highway was constructed on the site and occupied in 1935.
By 1910, the fate of the house, in an area of Brooklyn that was being rapidly developed, was becoming obvious. The Times article reported:
The house has been well kept up, but fearing lest the hand of time or vandals might deal harshly with some of its choice bits of carving, Mr. Hitchings removed a few years ago a few beautifully carved wood mantels...

"B.O. Plenty" Vintage Wind-Up Tin Toy by Marx Original Box. American, Circa 1935
By Louis Marx and Company
Located in Incline Village, NV
"B.O. Plenty (printed on the back) is the name of this American made tin wind-up toy; named after the classic Dick Tracy comic book and radio character of the 1930's. In his hand he is holding his daughter, Baby Sparkle.
Markings include the Marx logo to the rear "Made in The United States of America" in logo as well as location of manufacture, "New York, N,Y.". Vertically in small print on back of pants "By Permission of Famous Artists Syndicated Copyright By Chicago Tribune" (see images for markings), Markings on the box contribute to validating the genesis and name of the toy, and 200 fifth Avenue, New York address of the Marx Company, which was founded in 1919.
Highly lithographed (comes with the very hard to find nice condition original box as well) this example is in excellent and all original condition with no restoration or touch up of any kind.Colors include; yellow shirt and hat. blue vest, brown striped pants, white and flesh tones to face and baby. The toy features B.O. Plenty with a "wise guy" look on his face, while holding his baby. When wound up he waddles back and forth, with his hat flying up in the air and back down again (see movie attached to this listing). The toy works great!
Dimensions: 8 1/2" high x 2 3/4" wide x 2 1/2" deep.
Provenance: From a recently acquired West Coast collection of fine quality tin toys.
