Fornasetti Egocentrismo Porcelain Geometric Op Art Plates, Six Plates
By Piero Fornasetti
Located in Downingtown, PA
Fornasetti Egocentrismo Porcelain Geometric Op Art Plates,
Six Plates
1990s
The Piero Fornasetti six circular plates in black and white have geometric op-art patterns named " Egocentrismo". They are numbered 1,2,2,3,4 and 5.
Dimensions: 10 1/4 inches Diameter x 1 inch high (26cm diameter).
Mark: Marks and inscriptions: A hand holding a brush dipped in paint and 'EGOCENTRISMO'/
'FORNASETTI - MILANO, MADE IN ITALY' over a green back stamp- Eschenbach below a crown and below Bavaria Germany and three stars- all in underglaze green.
Condition. Two with some rubbing.
One of the most interesting elements of Fornasetti's practice is his aesthetic dedication to figuration and fantasy.
What makes the set of "Egocentrismo" so special is that the pattern is entirely abstract!
A true anomaly from Fornasetti's massive body of work, this motif reminds us how experimental and creative he was.
Clearly influenced by both historical decorative motifs, Op art and Italian design. (For example Egocentrismo #4 is a variation of a pattern often used by Gio Ponti)
Reference: Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, page 617, # 172-173. Originally a set of six plates named Egcentrismo (Egocentralism).
Example in V & A, London (Museum # C.66-1985)
"Hard paste porcelain plate, without edge rim but with foot rim. Black printed decoration in 'op-art' style; view down a chequer board cylinder with a black circle at the centre.
Place of Origin: Milan, Italy (designed)
Date: 1950-1960 (designed)
Artist/maker: Fornasetti, Piero, born 1913 - died 1988...

In 1805 Baldock's name first appears as the freehold owner of 7 Hanway Street, London. Over the years he expanded his premises. By 1840 his property in this street comprised nos 1 and 2, both with back premises, and in addition he owned a yard and no. 3, which he let. It was in 1 and 2 Hanway Street that he carried on business up to 1843 when he retired, selling his stock and moving to a fashionable residential address, Hyde Park Place. According to one 19th-century source, the business was taken over by Frederick Litchfield's father. He was buried in St Pancras Church, Euston, where he is commemorated by a marble memorial tablet on the north wall, dedicated jointly to him and Mary Frances Westoby.
In 1805 he described himself as dealer in china and glass. By 1821 he was styled in the Post Office Directories as antique furniture and ornamental china dealer, and in 1826 he described his activities in a bill heading as ‘buying, selling, exchanging and valuing China, Cabinets, Screens, Bronzes etc.’. Though Baldock's business consisted primarily in dealing in antique porcelain and furniture — largely foreign — he repaired, remodelled and altered existing furniture. He also produced designs for new pieces and had them made.
In 1836 Baldock sold French eighteenth-century furniture to Lady Stafford (Countess of Sutherland) for Dunrobin Castle, and in 1842 Scotland’s leading country house architect, William Burns, recommended to his patron O. Tyndall Bruce of Falkland House that ‘for Cabinets and China, do not omit going to Baldock’s Hanway Street, Oxford Street… which is the first place in London’.
In 1841 the Duke of Buccleuch was sent drawings of bedroom furniture as well as working drawings of an octagonal table, a bookcase and three stalls. A design of a table in the Buccleuch papers which is annotated ‘No. 3 Amboyna wood ground with coloured flowers’ is almost certainly the preliminary sketch for a table which was later made. Robert Byng (1764-1847) and George Newport, 2nd Earl of Bradford were also customers of Baldock’s. In 1840 he supplied a two encoignures with slab tops to the latter (one illus. FHS Newsletter (February 2017, p. 5). A pair of china cabinets...

George 111 period Chippendale Armchair finely carved, Circa 1760
By Thomas Chippendale
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hardwood, Mid Georgian, Thomas Chippendale period Armchair of excellent wide proportions and superb colour, which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760.
The Arm Chair has many fine features:
Excellent wide proportions.
Fine Scroll Arms.
Similar carved Scroll Ears to ends of cresting rails.
Intersecting ribbon pierced splat with carved detail.
Fluted side rails to back.
The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer on both back and front legs.
It has a drop-in seat with a very light green plain fabric. This drop in seat allows for an easy change of fabric covering to one of choice, by reupholstering the seat.
The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the back and rear legs. The hardwood, possibly Walnut, has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years.
Overall a fine quality, English Georgian Arm Chair...

Antique Large William IV Silver Tray Salver by Paul Storr 19th Century
By Paul Storr
Located in London, GB
This is a wonderful English antique William IV sterling silver tray, or salver, by the world famous silversmith Paul Storr.
It has clear hallmarks for London 1820 the makers mark of Paul Storr.
It is typical of his work with the octafoil shape and the exquisitely detailed reeded rim, and it is raised on four delightful foliate and scroll feet.
The centre is engraved with a shield shaped coat of arms which I have had researched.
The Marital Arms of Knollis and Hallifax
The armorial bearings as engraved upon this George IV Large English Sterling Silver Footed Salver by Paul Storr hallmarked London 1820 are those of the family of Knollis with Hallifax in pretence. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing the arms of the husband over the entire surface of the shield, whilst the arms of the wife (as an heraldic heiress) are placed on a small shield (known as an escutcheon of pretence) centrally on the husband’s arms.
They may be blazoned as follows:
Arms:
Quarterly 1st and 4th Azure crusily of cross crosslets a cross moline voided or (for Knollys) 2nd and 3rd Gules on a chevron argent three roses of the field barbed proper (for Knollys) over all an escutcheon of pretence Or on a pile engrailed sable between two fountains barry wavy of six argent and azure three cross crosslets of the first (for Hallifax)
Crest:
An elephant argent [differenced with a mullet1 ] (for Knollys)
Motto:
In utrumque paratus [Prepared for either] (for Knollys)
These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of The Honourable and Reverend Francis Knollis2 (baptised 3rd January 1743 died 27th February 1826),
1 The cadency mark for a third son of a family. 2 Francis appears to have preferred this spelling of his family’s surname. It is spelt as it is to be pronounced.
of Burford in the County of Oxfordshire and of Eastleach Martin in the County of Gloucestershire and Mary Hallifax (baptised 5th March 1753 buried 18th December 1830). Francis and Mary were married at the Parish Church of St Mary, Ewell in the County of Surrey on the 9th June 1772. Francis was the third son of Charles Knollys (the titular 5th Earl of Banbury) 3 and his wife, Martha Hughes, whilst Mary was the daughter of The Reverend James Hallifax, of Ewell aforesaid and his wife, Elizabeth Chardavoyn.
3 Francis’s father claimed to be the 5th Earl of Banbury. A claim that continued to be pursued by the family until William Knollys, the titular 8th Earl of Banbury (born 1763 died 1834) was forced to discontinue its use by a resolution of the House of Lords which rejected his claim to the earldom in 1813.
The crest surmounts a detailed dedication:
This piece of plate was presented to the Honourable Rev Knolls by the inhabitants of the town and immediate neighbourhood of Burford on his completing the fiftieth year of his incumbency as the vicar of Burford.
In testimony of their high respect 11th April 1821
There is no mistaking its unique quality and design, which is sure to make it a treasured piece by any discerning collector.
Condition:
In excellent condition with clear hallmarks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation.

Paul Storr
born in London England in 1771, was to become one of the most talented silversmiths of the nineteenth century. Today his legacy of exceptionally well crafted silver, found worldwide in museums and private collections, leaves one in awe when compared to that of his contemporaries. After having served a seven year apprenticeship from the age of 14, he began his career in 1792 when he went into a brief partnership with William Frisbee. This did not last and in 1793 a new mark, (his initials ‘P S’) was entered. By the beginning of the nineteenth century he had established himself as one of London’s top silversmiths producing, amongst others, commissions for Royalty.
In 1801 he married Elizabeth Susanna Beyer with whom he was to have ten children. In 1807 Paul Storr entered into a working relationship with Philip Rundell and by 1811 was a partner, and managing the workshops for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell.
During this period he kept his own marks and separate workshop. However it was through Rundell, Bridge & Rundell who were appointed Goldsmith in Ordinary to George III in 1804 that his reputation as a master silversmith grew. His talents lay in being able to transform ideas and designs from Rundell, Bridge & Rundell’s designers, William Theed...

Small 19th Century Camphor Wood Campaign Trunk
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Delightful Mid 19th Century Camphor Wood Military Campaign Trunk, Of Rare Small Proportions, Having Well Figured Lift Up Lid Enclosing Storage Space, Original Brass Bound Decoration And Original Brass Handles.
Its widely accepted that trunks like this were normally purposed for army use, often given into the ownership of high ranking officers to use for their travels around the various battlegrounds and territories of the empire around the world, hence the carrying handles and the brass banded decoration, which also serves the functional purpose of protecting the item from bumps and bashes during the numerous times it would have been transported.
In modern day living this trunk would make a perfect coffee table boasting signifcant storage, or could also be used as a storage chest in many locations around the home including the hallway, living room or bedroom. The trunk is also a little smaller than a large amount which yuou will find on the market, which of course allows for it to be used in an even wider variety of spaces.
The trunk has also been inspected in our workshops by our expert antique...
