This is a good, late Georgian, ironstone Soup Bowl or Plate, in pattern no. 15, manufactured by the English Davenport factory, which was situated in Longport, Staffordshire, England between 1794 and 1887. This oriental garden pattern is transfer printed in cobalt blue of different shades, with hand gilded detail around the inner and outer rims. The pattern is called "Bamboo and Peony" which is Davenport's pattern number 15, a very early pattern and probably copied from a Chinese original. This exact pattern is illustrated on a plate in Godden's Guide to Ironstone, by Geoffrey A Godden, page 230, plate 176. Davenport were one of the earliest producers of Ironstone along with Mason's, Spode and others and called their ironstone pottery wears "Stone China". This is a beautiful plate in the Chinese inspired pattern number 4089, produced by the Copeland - Late Spode factory and made of earthenware pottery called Pearl-ware, in the mid 19th century, circa 1850. This plate is well potted with a recessed rim. The pattern is transfer printed under-glaze in cobalt blue, then carefully hand painted in bold coloured enamels over-glaze in Gilt Heightened, Rare Pattern Number '4089' which Depicts Oriental Flowers including Bamboo, Peonies and Prunus Blossom in a garden setting with insects. This is a good quality coffee can that we attribute to the Coalport Porcelain works, Shropshire, England, made during the John Rose period of the George 111rd years, circa 1805-1810. The coffee can is nominally parallel, tapering slightly to the base, with a simple loop handle with one lower kink and pointed attachments. It has a shallow foot recess with obtuse corner and is unmarked to the base. The pattern is beautifully hand painted in an all gold gilt floral upper border pattern with further gilding on the body above the base rim, around the upper rim and to the outer handle.
