Imitating the Dutch eighteenth century Baroque style, and crafted in France in the nineteenth, this exceptional piece is a large rectangular silvered mirror, combining a decadent, indulgent, elaborate Baroque design with the skill and proficiency of nineteenth century French craftsmanship. Notable for its impressively large size, it features delicate floral embellishments and a decorative vase surmount, and this stunning antique mirror would make a beautiful addition to any elegant interior.
Although it was made in France, the silvered mirror is actually fashioned in the 18th century Dutch style. Known as the Dutch 'Golden Age', this period of the decorative arts was inspired by the previous Baroque style forms, which can be distinguished on the present antique mirror. Originating in 17th Century Italy, the ornate Baroque style is characterised by its dramatic exuberance and luxurious decadence. Floral garlands and scrolling foliate imagery are common to Baroque design, as is the use of heavy textiles such as velvet and damask. The influence of the Baroque is evident in the silver mirror's heavily ornamented frame, which features lavish, swirling embellishments that are balanced by the structured rectangular frame below. The Baroque style of the Dutch Golden Age experienced a 19th Century revival, which is excellently demonstrated by this large antique silvered mirror...

This superb pair of wall brackets are a masterclass in the Meissen design style.
The mirror of each bracket is mounted on an ebonised wood backing, which is surrounded by a porcelain C-scroll surround encrusted with floral decoration. Featuring delicate scrolling motifs, the edge decoration includes both painted floral patterns and moulded floral assemblages, all in a vibrant colour scheme which stands out against the pure white porcelain base. Two expertly crafted birds perch at the corners of each bracket, carefully painted to mimic their real-life counterparts. The very top and very base of each bracket culminates in a playful putto, who represents one of the four seasons.
Below the mirrored section of each bracket is a semi-circular wooden top, which sits on top of a basket-shaped porcelain support. Surrounding this support is another porcelain edge, which is encrusted with a floral garland of bright green leaves and delicate blossoms.

Although Rococo is usually thought of as developing first in the decorative arts and interior design, its origins lie in the late Baroque architectural work of Borromini (1599–1667) mostly in Rome and Guarini (1624–1683) mostly in Northern Italy but also in Vienna, Prague, Lisbon, and Paris. Italian architects of the late Baroque/early Rococo were wooed to Catholic (Southern) Germany, Bohemia and Austria by local princes, bishops and prince-bishops. Inspired by their example, regional families of Central European builders went further, creating churches and palaces that took the local German Baroque style to the greatest heights of Rococo elaboration and sensation.
An exotic but in some ways more formal type of Rococo appeared in France where Louis XIV's succession brought a change in the court artists and general artistic fashion. By the end of the king's long reign, rich Baroque designs were giving way to lighter elements with more curves and natural patterns.
