A pair of sand pictures by Benjamin Zobel after paintings by de Loutherbourg
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
These extraordinary ‘paintings’ were created using coloured grains of sand rather than paints. Each is after an original painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg. The first scene shows the Battle of Hastings with a central mounted figure, presumably William the Conqueror, with a red plume in his helmet, raising his sword against a fighter on foot. A printed version of this image, shown above, was made by William Bromley. (See the British Museum registration number 1858,1009.115 for a fine impression.) The second scene, composed with a similar central mounted knight with a raised axe (sword in the original) represents Richard the Lionheart in combat against Saladin at the Battle of Acre. In this case the print was made by Anker Smith...

Les Quatre Eléments Oil Painting on Canvas, Neoclassical, Circa 1873
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
Pierre-Victor GALLAND (1822-1892) ‘Les Quatre Eléments’ Four, oil on canvas. France, Circa 1873. Each painting depicting one of the cardinal elements personified as a female figure in the presence of its most evident attribute. Painted with strong light and colour. Earth panel depicts one of the four elements in a compelling fashion with an ascendent female figure robed in flowing drapery with foot and arm extended reaching skyward: each with attendant putti below. Earth is shown swathed in robes of greens and white, with a fanciful foliate headdress of lush leaves and bullrushes. Air leaps effortlessly into the sky draped in blush pink and holding a slender fruiting bough. Fire ascends dramatically into the sky holding forth a flaming torch and draped in bright burnished orange and grey, her image seemingly lit from a fire kindled below by an ignipotent putto. Water suitably draped in billowing azure blue with a translucent undergarment, holds aloft a bubble representing water is portrayed with shimmering translucent wings, an attendant winged putto pulling at her hem. Under the Second Empire, Haussmann’s transformation of Paris went hand in hand with the construction of luxurious mansions for the new haute bourgeois. Gallards extensive work for wealthy patrons such as Lionel de Rothschild and Edouard André, led him to become one of Paris’s most admired and sought-after decorative artists. His fame quickly spread and led him to carry out projects outside the capital for, among others, Baron von Derwies in Nice, Prince Narischkine in Saint Petersburg and William Vanderbilt in the United States. Literature Pierre-Victor Galland, Un Tiepolo français au XIXe siècle. Published in 2006, Somogy, Piscine-musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent, Musée départemental de l'Oise (Paris, Roubaix, Beauvais). ISBN 978-2-7572-0027-8. (in French) Materials Oil on Canvas Provenance Acquired in France with four other panels (The Four Seasons), at the end of the 19th century by Herman Ossian Armour (1837-1901), businessman, and founder of the Armour Meat Company and American humanist. He brought them back to his USA residence at Fifth Avenue, New York Bequeathed to Mary Armour...

Painting of Farmyard Scene with chickens, Oil on Canvas, Signed L.J. Cruise
Located in Downingtown, PA
"Farmyard Morning": Large Antique Oil on Canvas Painting of Chickens by Louis J. Cruise, Dated 1911 A substantial and atmospheric early 20th-century oil on canvas painting, signed and dated by the noted Pennsylvania artist Louis J. Cruise (1861–1945) in 1911. This delightful genre scene captures the quiet activity of a traditional American farmyard, characterized by the artist's signature realistic style and serene composition. The scene depicts a flock of chickens foraging in golden straw outside a rustic stone and timber barn. A magnificent rooster stands alert on a hay mound, watching over hens of various breeds—white, speckled, and brown—while one chicken emerges from the dark interior of the farm building. In the background, a wooden rail fence separates the yard from a lush green pasture and distant woods, with small birds perching casually on the rails and pecking at the straw. The work is housed in a wide, impressive gilt frame. Markings: Signature: Signed and dated in the lower left corner: "L.J. Cruise / 1911". Condition: Good antique condition. The canvas is well-composed and executed, capturing the play of light on the landscape. Measurements: Frame Height: 35 inches (88.9 cm) Frame Width: 55 1/2 inches (141.0 cm) Sight Height: 29 inches (73.7 cm) Sight Width: 48 3/4 inches (123.8 cm) Historical Context: Louis J. Cruise (1861–1945) was a prolific American artist born in Bally, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Peter A. Kotka, Stiil Life with Bottle of 1997 Chateau Belgrave Haut Medoc
Located in Downingtown, PA
Peter A. Kotka, Stiil Life with Bottle of 1997 Chateau Belgrave Grand Cru Classe, Glass Cheese Oil on Linen Panel, Signed lower right. The Framed trompe l'oeil still life of a dusty bottle of wine, a half-empty wine glass and a small bunch of grapes with a boxed round of French Cheese in the background, the cork lying on its side on a wood table within an alcove. The bottle is a 1995 Chateau d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie. Reference: From the Unicorn Gallery, UK. Peter has an absolute love of oil painting and especially admires the masters of Dutch Painting of the 17th Century, which is reflected in his own work. Since 1995, after seeing the work of Estonian artist Olav Maran, Peter decided to review his paintings and started researching ‘Still Life’ painters such as Willem Kalf and De Heem. After experimenting with priming his own panels and canvases with different colours, then painting with thick and thin paint and glazing on top, in the way of the old masters, he has developed a style with detail and atmosphere that is essential in his portrayal of fine wine, fruit and cheeses etc. In a quirky and sometimes conceptual world, Peter makes no apologies for producing traditional subjects where the craftsmanship is evident in every brushstroke. His paintings bring much joy and pleasure to those who understand he has an obvious and underlying love of handling paint and observing his subject using techniques that take many years to acquire. Recently he has changed the view point for some of his paintings, to give them a bold contemporary look. Peter Kotka...

Modern Dutch Master: Peter A. Kotka, "Still Life with Côte-Rôtie" Trompe l'œil (c. 1995) A masterfully executed oil on linen panel still life by the listed British artist Peter A. Kotka (b. 1951). Painted in the Trompe l'œil ("trick of the eye") tradition, this work revives the lighting and technical virtuosity of the 17th-century Dutch Masters. The composition is set within a dark, shadowed alcove, dramatically illuminating the subject matter to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. A bottle of 1995 Chateau d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie (a prestigious Rhone wine) stands beside a half-filled glass of red wine, capturing the translucency of the liquid. A soft cheese in a wooden round box, a scattering of grapes in a porcelain bowl, and a cork lying on the rustic wooden ledge complete the scene. The artist's signature is located in the lower right.
