Antonella Scarpitta Chairs

Italian

Italian architect and designer Antonella Scarpitta has been creating luxurious, timeless furniture since her career began in the late 1970s. Her expertise in designing all kinds of comfortable seating is evident in her plush armchairs and sofas, while the clean, spare forms of her tables draw on early modernist works and the teachings of the Bauhaus. She has said that she fashions her furnishings to reflect "strong formal purity."

The Sicilian-born Scarpitta studied at the State Institute of Industrial Planning in Cantu. In 1978 she opened her studio in nearby Brianza. That same year, she began work on her first collection — Collego — an interlocking series of rearrangeable walnut wall panels that afforded consumers the opportunity to hang shelves in a living room or secure types of case furniture to a wall elsewhere in a space. Since then, she has been active in interior projects and industrial design.

Scarpitta is credited with having designed Dinamica, a microfiber fabric used in various forms of apparel and car upholstery. She has created and renovated many private residences and industrial buildings over the years, including villas in Rome. From 1985–1990, she served as creative director for the Italian furniture company Swan

Scarpitta has developed a wealth of collaborative relationships with a range of iconic manufacturers such as de Sede and Thayer Coggin over the years, and the first decade of the 21st century yielded many more partnerships for her. In 2001, she founded the Antonella Scarpitta Designer A 360° studio. A few years later, her SAPPO seating for Hans Kaufeld won the Red Dot award for technological and aesthetic innovation. Her work has been a part of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Design Museum and more.

Set of 12 Italian Pine Dining Chairs, Attributed to Mario Marenco, 1970s
By Mario Marenco
Located in Almelo, NL
Set of 12 Italian Pine Dining Chairs, Attributed to Mario Marenco, 1970s A rare set of twelve sculptural dining chairs in solid pine, attributed to Mario Marenco. Italian craftsmanship, 1970s. Warm patina, organic lines and beautifully rounded volumes. This impressive set of twelve dining chairs is attributed to Mario Marenco, Italy, circa 1970s. Crafted in solid pine, the chairs display the characteristic sculptural language associated with Marenco’s organic modern designs: warm materials, soft curvature, and a sense of architectural solidity blended with a friendly, human approach to form. Each chair features a wide, gently rounded backrest that flows into two vertical back supports, creating an instantly recognisable silhouette. The carved seat, with its subtly modelled edges, enhances comfort while maintaining a clean and minimal aesthetic. The solid pine construction shows beautiful grain patterns, natural knots and a deep, hand-applied patinated finish that has developed a rich, warm tone over the years. The proportions are balanced and reassuringly robust, making the chairs suitable for both residential and hospitality settings—such as chalets, restaurants, wine bars or alpine-inspired interiors. Their expressive and organic character resonates with the Italian rustic-modern movement of the 1970s, as well as with the handcrafted Brutalist vocabulary seen in contemporary furniture from the same era. Large matching sets of pine chairs from this period are increasingly difficult to source, and sets of twelve are particularly rare. Their strong visual presence allows them to pair beautifully with monolithic wood tables, stone dining tables or softer modernist interiors. With their combination of authenticity, craftsmanship and sculptural warmth, these chairs present a distinctive alternative to more commonly known mid-century design classics. A wonderful opportunity for interior designers looking for a cohesive and highly decorative seating ensemble. Dimensions (per chair): Height: 81 cm (31.9 in) Width: 45 cm (17.7 in) Depth: 55 cm (21.6 in) Seat Height: 44 cm (17.3 in) Quantity: 12 chairs CONDITION REPORT Very good original vintage condition. Solid and stable frames. Minor wear consistent with age and use. Beautiful patinated finish with natural knots and grain variations. Mario Marenco (1933–2021) was an Italian architect and designer known for his sculptural, organic approach to furniture. He collaborated with Arflex, Poltrona Frau and several artisan workshops during the 1970s, creating expressive designs in solid wood and richly upholstered forms. Marenco’s work combines warmth, humour and architectural precision, making his pieces highly desirable in today’s interiors. SHIPPING & PACKAGING Worldwide insured shipping available. Mario Marenco Sapporo chairs for Mobil Girgi Italy 1970
By Mobil Girgi, Mario Marenco
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Wonderful set of Sapporo dining chairs designed by Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi in Italy in 1970. These chairs are made from Italian walnut with a stunning grain pattern. The seats are original and have aged beautiful, showing a charming, worn-in leather look. What makes these chairs special is their unique design. They have a hammer-shaped backrest that looks nice and provides good support. The seats are wide and comfortable for long meals. One cool thing about these chairs is how they're put together. Two slim slats go from the top of the backrest all the way down to the bottom, where they connect with a horizontal slat. This design makes the chairs look simple and modern. Kindly note that the chairs are priced and sold in a set of 6 but we have 12 of these chairs available as shown on the pictures. Mario Marenco was born in 1933. He studied architecture in Naples and won research grants for Stockholm and Chicago. In 1960 he opened in Rome his own atelier of architecture and...
