Bulgari Earrings
Italian
Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (in the brand's logo, it's styled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, Bulgari has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.
Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, Bulgari’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932.
The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 1940s, Bulgari debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the Bulgari brand.

It was 1963 in Italy on the set of Cleopatra when Richard Burton famously said, “I introduced Liz to beer, she introduced me to Bulgari,” referring to the film’s iconic star, Elizabeth Taylor. It was even rumored that Ms. Taylor had requested the Italian jewelry house to wait around the set with their latest collection, so she could go shopping in between takes.
Founded in 1884 in Rome, Bulgari is known for voluminous forms, signature sunny shades of yellow gold, and vibrantly colored gemstones composed in curvaceous patterns. In the 1920s, however, their high jewelry creations reflected the design of traditional French Maisons, incorporating platinum and diamonds with stylized Art Deco design. Detailed design description: Central oval rubies are encircled by alternating bands of smaller diamonds and rubies creating an eye-catching color contrast that Bulgari is celebrated for. As a feature of bombe-design, there is a gradual sloping upwards from outer bands to the center rubies that gives the earrings a wonderful 3-dimensional quality and volume. All four pieces are open-work, with the coral being staged in textured gold frames and accented with round brilliant cut diamonds.
The brooches’ shape is reminiscent of poinsettia flowers. Each brooch features three tiers of "petals” adorned with sparkling diamonds. The coral is dark red in the center and dark orange on edges which added to a three-dimensional look of the piece.
The earrings of “flame” design feature an oval cabochon coral in the center. This coral is beautifully enhanced with five diamonds underlining it on the bottom. Eight more diamonds are placed among the coral “flames”.
