Charles and Ray Eames Lounge Chairs
There’s perhaps no more recognizable moniker of mid-century modern furniture than the Eames chair, used, of course, to describe that ubiquitous leather-and-wood lounge that has been making its way into interiors since 1956. But the Eames lounger is just one of many iconic seats credited to the “first couple” of modern American design. Indeed, the name Eames is virtually synonymous with American mid-century seating — and for good reason.
Together, husband-and-wife duo Charles and Ray Eames (1907–78; 1912–88) designed some of the most recognizable and enduring chairs not only of the 20th century but in all of American history.
The couple met in 1940 at the illustrious Cranbrook Academy of Art — which would become the go-to art school for the icons of mid-century modernism — where they befriended design luminaries Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia. Charles and Ray married afterward, then moved to Los Angeles in 1941. There, they embarked on a streak of design experimentation, resulting in a staggering output of furniture across a multitude of often quite experimental materials.
Central to one of their most groundbreaking material developments was the “Kazam!” machine, a handmade, bicycle-pump-operated apparatus for molding layers of plywood together. This method would prove the basis for some of the couple’s most recognizable seats, including their DCW and DCM dining chairs, both produced for Herman Miller, whose director of design, George Nelson, tapped Charles in 1946. This partnership would go on to be one of the most prolific in modern design history, with Eames furniture still topping best-seller lists for the manufacturer today. Although Ray was notably absent from that Herman Miller contract — as well as from many historic recognitions of her husband’s work — she and Charles were true partners, working collaboratively on nearly all design projects.
Never content with one medium, Charles and Ray would go on to experiment with fiberglass, a low-cost, easily manipulatable material that aligned with their belief in mass, accessible design. The couple dipped a toe in making virtually every type of furniture, including coffee tables, dining tables, desks and even their clever Eames storage units, given the moniker “working art” upon their 1949 debut at the Detroit Institute of Arts. A fitting label, indeed, for all of the couple’s furnishings, even if they’re best remembered for their chair designs.
The Eames molded fiberglass side chairs and armchairs were released through Herman Miller in 1950. Their efforts also extended to the workplace (where Herman Miller got its start): Their 1958 Executive chair remains a staple in offices around the globe.

Designed in the late 1940s by Charles Eames, this chair has cemented itself in Mid-Century Design like very few other pieces. Early models like this are difficult to come by and are very rarely in such good condition, as many have been worked on in some way or another before their value shot up. These chairs feature a super sleek design of steam-bent plywood, an incredibly innovative technique pioneered by Herman Miller in collaboration with the Eames's and manufacturing firm Evans. The large seat and back are mounted to a molded plywood base with rubber shock mounts, another Eames staple. This allows them to have excellent contrast through spacing, which gives them an excellent stance, almost insect-like. Both are early chairs with the correct screw configurations beneath.
This pair features all original hardware, finish, and shock mounts. Very few blemishes, and those that exist are minimal, barely visible even in our high-res pictures.

Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and were married in 1941. They moved together to California and continued their design work they began together at Cranbrook. A commission, which they acquired from the government during WWII to produce molded plywood splints and stretchers, launched a career producing iconic Mid-Century Modern furnishings which are still fresh and sought after today. The DAX armchair was first produced in 1952 and is the most sought-after version of Charles and Ray Eames's classic fibreglass chairs, which revolutionised 20th Century furniture. Sometimes called the Eames 'Shell Chair', 'Bucket Chair' or 'Rope Edge Chair', this pair of DAX armchairs (which stands for Dining Height Armchair X-Base) has 'Greige' coloured (a combination of grey and beige) fibreglass shells, one of the three original Eames fibreglass shell colours produced from the early 1950s. This pair is fourth generation (made from 1959 onwards) as they have the improved white nylon glide feet and 'H-bases', so were likely manufactured in the early 1960s.
These wonderful armchairs features four-legged tubular steel chrome H-bases above all original & complete nylon glide feet. They have 'greige' fibreglass 'V'-stamped (for Vitra) shell seats, which join to the bases via Herman Miller marked black shock mounts and are upholstered in beautiful caramel leather with lovely contrasting white plastic bordering.
Much sought after for their simplicity, beautiful lines and their status as design icons, the gorgeous colouring and extremely rare collaborative authenticity of this pair of DAX chairs makes them even more special. Comfortable, iconic, exceptionally rare and effortlessly cool, these are a stunning and timeless pair of armchairs.
HERMAN MILLER / VITRA COLLABORATION & MARKINGS
Ray and Charles Eames began designing for Herman Miller in the late-1940s, since when the Herman Miller company has manufactured Eames furniture including the DAX chair, and in 1957 the Herman Miller company assigned the Swiss company Vitra the manufacturing licenses for the European market, since when they have also made Eames furniture including the DAX chair.
These two DAX chairs both have the Herman Miller logo markings to their black shock mounts and also have an embossed 'V' (for Vitra) on the underside of fibreglass shells, next to which the original Herman Miller sticker would have been placed. We therefore surmise that this pair would have been a collaborative effort produced for the European market between Herman Miller, who may have supplied the base (or at the very least the shock mounts) and Vitra, who made the fibreglass shell (and possibly all of the chair apart from the shock mounts.)
Despite extensive digging we haven't been able to find a detailed history of such collaborations between Herman Miller and Vitra, as it's rather nuanced and may have been carried out ad-hoc basis that wasn’t recorded in the histories of the companies. However, we think it highly plausible such collaborations would have happened, as both companies made the same Eames products and so could well have used each other's know-how and parts in the interest of keeping the Eames brand and products up to the highest specifications possible.
