Herman Miller Lounge Chairs

American

No other business of its kind did more than the Herman Miller Furniture Company to introduce modern design into American homes. Working with legendary designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Alexander Girard, the Zeeland, Michigan-based firm fostered some of the boldest expressions of what we now call mid-century modern style. In doing so, Herman Miller produced some of the most beautiful, iconic and, one can even say, noblest chairs, sofas, tables and other furniture ever.

Founded in 1923, Herman Miller was originally known for grand historicist bedroom suites: heavily ornamented wood furniture that appealed to a high-minded, wealthier clientele. The company — named for its chief financial backer — began to suffer in the early 1930s as the Great Depression hit, and D.J. De Pree, the company’s CEO, feared bankruptcy. In 1932, aid came in the form of Gilbert Rohde, a self-taught furniture designer who had traveled widely in Europe, absorbing details of the Art Deco movement and other modernist influences. After persuading De Pree that the growing middle class required smaller, lighter household furnishings, Rohde set a new course for Herman Miller, creating sleek chairs, tables and cabinetry that were the essence of the Streamline Moderne style.

Rohde died suddenly in 1944. The following year, De Pree turned to George Nelson, an architect who had written widely about modern furniture design. Under Nelson’s leadership, Herman Miller would embrace new technologies and materials and audacious biomorphic forms

Some of the pieces the company produced are now emblems of 20th century American design, including the Eames lounge chair and ottoman and Nelson’s Marshmallow sofa and Coconut chair. Such instantly recognizable furnishings have become timeless — staples of a modernist décor; striking, offbeat notes in traditional environments.

It is comprised of an aluminum frame, 4 prong aluminum base with nylon feet, black swivel shaft, black powder coated aluminum arms, and it has been reupholstered in a lovely aubergine or eggplant faux suede fabric. Can we just say Design EXCELLENCE!!!! And not to mention extraordinary comfort! The dynamic design duo of husband and wife team Charles & Ray Eames focused on every detail and combined ergonomics, flexibility, constructive elements, highest quality materials, and attention to superior style which created a masterpiece that is highly sought after still today. The design was introduced in 1958 and is still in production! This vintage beauty will be phenomenal at a desk in an office setting, next to your bed or in the dressing area of your bedroom, or extra seating in the sitting room. It is versatile enough to blend in with many décor styles, but it’s bursting with Mid-Century Modern magnificence!! This treasure is exactly what the designer ordered! Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and were married in 1941. They moved together to California and continued their design work they began together at Cranbrook. A commission, which they acquired from the government during WWII to produce molded plywood splints and stretchers, launched a career producing iconic Mid-Century Modern furnishings which are still fresh and sought after today. The Eames and their association with Herman Miller were the partnership of the century. If you want to learn more about Charles and Ray please visit Eames Office, the Eames Official website. Pair Eames Herman Miller DAX Leather Armchairs 1960s MCM Rope Edge Shell Bucket
By Vitra, Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in London, GB
A gorgeous and extremely rare pair of early 1960s caramel leather Eames DAX armchairs. A very special collaborative pair between Herman Miller and Vitra, these stunning armchairs work as lounge chairs, occasional chairs or dining chairs and will add stunning two-tone colouring and a fabulous Space Age 1960s aesthetic to any interior. The DAX armchair was first produced in 1952 and is the most sought-after version of Charles and Ray Eames's classic fibreglass chairs, which revolutionised 20th Century furniture. Sometimes called the Eames 'Shell Chair', 'Bucket Chair' or 'Rope Edge Chair', this pair of DAX armchairs (which stands for Dining Height Armchair X-Base) has 'Greige' coloured (a combination of grey and beige) fibreglass shells, one of the three original Eames fibreglass shell colours produced from the early 1950s. This pair is fourth generation (made from 1959 onwards) as they have the improved white nylon glide feet and 'H-bases', so were likely manufactured in the early 1960s. These wonderful armchairs features four-legged tubular steel chrome H-bases above all original & complete nylon glide feet. They have 'greige' fibreglass 'V'-stamped (for Vitra) shell seats, which join to the bases via Herman Miller marked black shock mounts and are upholstered in beautiful caramel leather with lovely contrasting white plastic bordering. Much sought after for their simplicity, beautiful lines and their status as design icons, the gorgeous colouring and extremely rare collaborative authenticity of this pair of DAX chairs makes them even more special. Comfortable, iconic, exceptionally rare and effortlessly cool, these are a stunning and timeless pair of armchairs. HERMAN MILLER / VITRA COLLABORATION & MARKINGS Ray and Charles Eames began designing for Herman Miller in the late-1940s, since when the Herman Miller company has manufactured Eames furniture including the DAX chair, and in 1957 the Herman Miller company assigned the Swiss company Vitra the manufacturing licenses for the European market, since when they have also made Eames furniture including the DAX chair. These two DAX chairs both have the Herman Miller logo markings to their black shock mounts and also have an embossed 'V' (for Vitra) on the underside of fibreglass shells, next to which the original Herman Miller sticker would have been placed. We therefore surmise that this pair would have been a collaborative effort produced for the European market between Herman Miller, who may have supplied the base (or at the very least the shock mounts) and Vitra, who made the fibreglass shell (and possibly all of the chair apart from the shock mounts.) Despite extensive digging we haven't been able to find a detailed history of such collaborations between Herman Miller and Vitra, as it's rather nuanced and may have been carried out ad-hoc basis that wasn’t recorded in the histories of the companies. However, we think it highly plausible such collaborations would have happened, as both companies made the same Eames products and so could well have used each other's know-how and parts in the interest of keeping the Eames brand and products up to the highest specifications possible. Hence this very rare pair of twice-marked Eames DAX chairs...

Although many modern furnishings bear his name, Herman Miller is not a furniture designer. It is the name of a manufacturer — the business was originally called the Michigan Star Furniture Company and produced bedroom sets in traditional styles. When the company's general manager D.J. De Pree purchased the manufacturer in 1923 with his father-in-law's help, he showed his gratitude by renaming it after his benefactor: Herman Miller. Today, the firm is best known for iconic mid-century modern furniture designed by the likes of George Nelson, Ray and Charles Eames, and others. Herman Miller chairs, tables, storage cabinets and more helped usher in a new era of design characterized by sleek lines, bold colors and luxurious materials.
