Maison Jansen Furniture

French

The Dutch-born Jean-Henri Jansen (1854–1928) was only in his mid-20s when he set up his Parisian design business in 1880. By the time he died, Maison Jansen had become the world’s first international decorating firm. Today, it is still regarded as one of the most notable firms and period furniture manufacturers in history, with its vintage floor lamps, tables, dressers and other furnishings remaining in demand.

Maison Jansen initially came to international prominence in 1883 when the young Jean-Henri Jansen traveled to Amsterdam to participate in the International Colonial Exposition, an event that featured presentations by 28 different nations and was attended by over a million visitors. There he exhibited as part of the French pavilion and won the silver medal. This led to two prominent new clients: King William III of the Netherlands and King Alfonso XII of Spain.

Next was King Leopold II of Belgium for the interiors of the Château du Laeken, as well as commissions for Egypt’s King Farouk and Great Britain’s King Edward VII. Thanks to his participation in global expositions and fairs, Jansen expanded the renown of the firm so that its studios would reign in such major cities as London, New York, Buenos Aires, Cairo and many more.

Jansen was not only sought after for his taste but also for his custom period-inspired pieces. For example, in the Count and Countess de Revilla de Camargo’s Havana mansion, Jansen designed Louis XV–style furniture crafted from Cuban mahogany, enhancing Maison Jansen’s reputation as an expert maker. His custom furniture business was so successful that by 1900 he had opened his own atelier and employed around 700 artisans.

In the 1960s, the firm, then led by Stéphane Boudin, worked with Jacqueline Kennedy on the refurbishment of rooms in the White House, including such spaces as the Queens’ Sitting Room, which featured bright blue fabric and neoclassical details. In the 1970s, legendary French actor Alain Delon brought his sense of style to bear on the world of furniture design, when he created a series of pieces for Maison Jansen.

Maison Jansen continued to produce furniture designs through the 20th century, responding to shifting tastes from Art Nouveau to Modern Regency. The atelier and studio officially closed its doors in 1989.

Pair of French Modern Neoclassical Armchairs / Lounge Chairs by Maison Jansen
By Maison Jansen
Located in New York, NY
A Rare and Important Pair of French MId-Century Modern Neoclassical Armchairs / Lounge chairs by Maison Jansen, Paris, circa 1940. These elegant chairs express the heart of Maison Jansen furniture, they are handmade of the finest materials and completely hand carved just as they were in the 18th Century. These elegant Neoclassical forms reflect the dignity of the past and and express the sobriety of the present. The legs are carved with saber legs in the rear and elegantly tapered legs in the front. The arm structures are gently curving and extend naturally all the way to the feet giving a sense of unlimited fluidity and movement. The back rails gently slope extending the continuous sense of line of the pieces. The lines are modern and sober throughout. The backrests are in a Curile form with an X form united by a circle centered with circular brass medallions adding a dynamic and distinctive finishing touches. The cross form and the circle form are ancient symbols relating earth and sky, masculine and feminine. Finally, the cushions are hand fitted around the leg structure allowing the chairs to breathe and to show off their architecture. And, the patina is hand finished in dark walnut. These Jansen Chairs are masterpieces of design and emblems of our history. They echo the greatness of one the world's leading design companies over a 100 year span., Documentation: An exact model of these chairs is pictured in Jansen Furniture, James Archer Abbott, Acanthus Press, New York, 2007, p. 12. See last photo. Tom Thomas Gallery / Thomas Gallery Ltd...

Luigi Saccardo UFO Pedestal Table in Steel and Glass by Maison Jansen 1970s
By Luigi Saccardo, Maison Jansen
Located in Cascina, Pisa
Round pedestal dining table model UFO with a base in brushed steel and tabletop in thick glass with a black enamel decorative circle. Designed by Luigi Saccardo and manufactured by Maison Jansen in the 1970s. Maison Jansen was a Paris-based interior decoration office founded in 1880 by Dutch-born Jean-Henri Jansen. From its beginnings, Maison Jansen combined traditional furnishings with influences of new trends including Anglo-Japanese style, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Turkish style. The firm paid great attention to historical research with which it attempted to balance clients' desires for livable, usable, and often dramatic space. Within ten years the firm had become a major purchaser of European antiques, and by 1890 had established an antique gallery as a separate firm that acquired and sold antiques to Jansen's clients and its competitors as well. In the early 1920s Jean-Henri Jansen approached Stéphane Boudin, who was then working in the textile trimming business owned by his father and brought him on board. Accounts of the arrangement vary. Speculation existed that Boudin was able to provide financial solvency to the prominent but capital-poor atelier. Boudin's attention to detail, concern for historical accuracy, and ability to create dramatic and memorable spaces brought increasing new work to the firm. Boudin was made director and presided over an expansion of the firm's offices and income. Not originally equipped with its own workrooms for producing furniture the firm began by relying upon antiques and the furniture contracted to outside cabinetmakers. By the early 1890s Maison Jansen had established its own manufacturing capacity producing furniture of contemporary design, as well as reproductions, primarily in the Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Directoire, and Empire styles. Throughout the firm's history, it employed a traditional style drawing upon European design, but influence of contemporary trends including the Vienna Secession, Modernism, and Art Deco has also appeared in Jansen interiors and in much of the custom furniture the firm produced between 1920 and 1950. Under Boudin's leadership, Maison Jansen provided services to the royal families of Belgium, Iran, and Serbia; Elsie de Wolfe, and Lady Olive Baillie's Leeds Castle...

To identify Maison Jansen, search inconspicuous areas, such as the bases of lamps and the undersides of tabletops and chairs, for maker's markings. Furniture produced by the French maker may feature "JANSEN," "JANSEN Paris," "JANSEN rue Royal" or "JANSEN/INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA" markings. Some Maison Jansen bronze light fixtures display a "JANSEN/9 RUE ROYALE" hallmark. However, not all pieces made by Maison Jansen bear marks. As a result, you might wish to consult a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer for help with the identification process.
