René Lalique Furniture

French, 1860-1945

The career of the famed jewelry designer, glassmaker and decorative artist René Lalique spanned decades and artistic styles. Best known today for his works in glass, Lalique first won recognition for his jewelry. He was described as the inventor of modern jewelry by the French artist and designer Émile Gallé, and his luxurious naturalistic designs helped define the Art Nouveau movement. Later as a glassmaker in the 1920s and ‘30s, Lalique designed vases, clocks, chandeliers and even car hood ornaments that were the essence of Art Deco chic. Even now, the name Lalique continues to be a byword for a graceful, gracious and distinctively French brand of sophistication.

Born in 1860 in the Marne region of France, Lalique began his career as a jewelry designer in the last decades of the 19th century. His work employed now-classic Art Nouveau themes and motifs: flowing, organic lines; forms based on animals, insects and flowers — all rendered in luxurious materials such as ivory, enamel, gold and semi-precious stones. By 1905, Lalique had begun creating works in glass, and his style began to shift to a cleaner, sharper, smoother, more modern approach suited to his new medium. His Paris shop’s proximity to perfumer François Coty’s led him to experiment with beautiful perfume bottles. He offered the first customized scent bottles, transforming the perfume industry. By the end of the First World War, the artist had fully embraced Art Deco modernity, devoting himself to new industrial techniques of glass production and designs that manifest the sweeping lines and the forms suggestive of speed and movement characteristic of the style. Lalique’s work looked both backward and forward in time: embracing ancient mythological themes even as it celebrated modern progress.

Late in his career, Lalique took on high profile luxury interior design projects in Paris, Tokyo and elsewhere. He designed decorative fixtures and lighting for the interior of the luxury liner Normandie in 1935, and decorated the salons of well-known fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet. Today, Lalique’s influence is as relevant as it was when he opened his first jewelry shop in 1890. In a modern or even a traditional décor, as you will see from the objects offered on these pages, the work of René Lalique provides the stamp of savoir-faire.

A Rare 1924 King Fouad I Box by René Lalique
By René Lalique
Located in Queens, NY
From Paris to Cairo: René Lalique’s ‘Fouad I’ Box and Its Royal Legacy A rare and historically significant creation by the preeminent French glass artist René Lalique, this exquisite box and cover, designed in 1924, exemplifies the fusion of artistic mastery and regal symbolism. Fashioned in clear and frosted glass, the piece is adorned with a finely moulded relief of winged solar discs, a motif evocative of ancient Egyptian iconography and celestial divinity. The subtle sepia staining enhances the intricate detailing, imbuing the composition with depth and an ethereal luminosity. The frosted lid bears a distinguished engraving of King Fouad I of Egypt, his state portrait rendered with remarkable precision, underscoring both his sovereign authority and the modern aspirations of his reign. A dedication inscribed on the base—"Offert par Fakhry Pacha à Paris le 9 Octobre 1924"—further contextualizes the piece within the realm of diplomatic and ceremonial gifting, situating it as a testament to cross-cultural exchange and early 20th-century Franco-Egyptian relations. Signed ‘R. LALIQUE’ to the lid, this refined objet d’art reflects Lalique’s unparalleled ability to harmonize material innovation with historical reverence. This box stands as an exceptional example of early 20th-century glasswork, where the aesthetic ideals of Art Deco converge with the grandeur of Egyptian heritage. Now regarded as one of the finest expressions of Lalique’s oeuvre, this box not only embodies the technical virtuosity of its maker but also serves as an enduring artifact of royal patronage and artistic diplomacy. "Few artists influenced the direction of early 20th century decorative design more than René Jules Lalique. Lalique was born in the small village of Ay in northern France in 1860, but moved with his family to Paris at the age of two. "Like many talented artists that emerged from Paris during the early 20th century, Lalique thrived in the creative epicenter of the European world, attending Collège Turgot, a premier Parisian school of the arts. After his father’s death in 1875, Lalique found employment apprenticing with jeweler Louis Aucoc, gaining experience that would lay the groundwork for his own mastery of the craft. By 1881, Lalique had transformed himself from an eager apprentice into a successful freelance jewelry designer, working for manufacturers such as Cartier and Boucheron, as well as a growing roster of private clientele including actress Sarah Bernhardt and oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. "Lalique’s nature-inspired creations, with their soft, sensual Art Nouveau curves...
