Tiffany Co. Furniture

American

Tiffany Co. is one of the most prominent purveyors of luxury goods in the United States, and has long been an important arbiter of style in the design of diamond engagement rings. A young Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed to his future wife, Eleanor, with a Tiffany ring in 1904. Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Astors and members of the Russian imperial family all wore Tiffany Co. jewelry. And Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis preferred Tiffany china for state dinners at the White House.

Although synonymous with luxury today, the firm started out rather modestly. Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded it in Connecticut as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” in 1837, at a time when European imports still dominated the nascent American luxury market. In 1853, Charles Tiffany — who in 1845 had launched the company’s famed catalog, the Blue Book, and with it, the firm’s signature robin’s-egg blue, which he chose for the cover — shifted the focus to fine jewelry.

In 1868, Tiffany Co. gained international recognition when it became the first U.S. firm to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. From then on, it belonged to the pantheon of American luxury brands.

At the start of the Gilded Age, in 1870, Tiffany Co. opened its flagship store, described as a "palace of jewels" by the New York Times, at 15 Union Square West in Manhattan. Throughout this period, its designs for silver tableware, ceremonial silver, flatware and jewelry were highly sought-after indicators of status and taste. They also won the firm numerous accolades, including the grand prize for silverware at the Paris Exposition of 1878. Among the firm’s glittering creations from this time are masterworks of Art Nouveau jewelry, such as this delicate aquamarine necklace and this lavish plique-à-jour peridot and gold necklace, both circa 1900.

When Charles Lewis Tiffany died, in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany became the firm’s design director. Under his leadership, the Tiffany silver studio was a de facto design school for apprentice silversmiths, who worked alongside head artisan Edward C. Moore. The firm produced distinctive objects inspired by Japanese art and design, North American plants and flowers, and Native American patterns and crafts, adding aesthetic diversity to Tiffany Co.’s distinguished repertoire.

Tiffany is also closely associated with diamonds, even lending its name to one particularly rare and exceptional yellow stone. The firm bought the Tiffany diamond in its raw state from the Kimberley mines of South Africa in 1878. Cut to create a 128.54-carat gem with an unprecedented 82 facets, it is one of the most spectacular examples of a yellow diamond in the world.

In a broader sense, Tiffany Co. helped put diamonds on the map in 1886 by introducing the American marketplace to the solitaire diamond design, which is still among the most popular engagement-ring styles. The trademark Tiffany® Setting raises the stone above the band on six prongs, allowing its facets to catch the light. A lovely recent example is this circa-2000 platinum engagement ring. Displaying a different design and aesthetic (but equally chic) is this exquisite diamond and ruby ring from the 1930s.

Chrysanthemum by Tiffany and Co Sterling Silver Chafing Dish with Warmer
By Tiffany Co.
Located in Big Bend, WI
Chrysanthemum (c1880) originally called Indian Chrysanthemum .Tiffany's luxurious Chrysanthemum silver was designed in 1880 by Charles Grosjean. With its flowing curves, swirling vegetation, meandering tendrils, and exotic blossoming flowers, Chrysanthemum is characteristic of The Tiffany Style or Art Nouveau, as the naturalistic style is now commonly known. The rich and graceful flowering motifs of Chrysanthemum were undoubtedly influenced by founder Louis Comfort Tiffany. They make Chrysanthemum the most sumptuous of any American pattern. Designed by Charles Grosjean (1841-1888). Grosjean worked in his family's firm which produced high end silverware to prominent New York City retailers, including Tiffany. Upon his father's death, Grosjean left his family firm to become superintendent of Tiffany's silver factory in 1868. He had great background in silver and was an artist and was referred to as "one of the best living decorators of silver". He was a teacher in the Tiffany School and designed a few full lines of sterling patterns for Tiffany in his short time with the company before his unfortunate and sudden death. His patterns Chrysanthemum (formally Indian Chrysanthemum) and English King are some of the most famous of his designs, and of Tiffany in general. English King by Tiffany and Co Sterling Silver Kettle on Stand #10053 (#4908)
By Tiffany Co.
Located in Big Bend, WI
ENGLISH KING (c. 1885) Patterns similar to our English King were first used in France and England late in the eighteenth century and have remained among the most popular styles for>flatware today, in both Europe and America. Tiffany & Co. first made its own version of English King in 1885. It harmonizes with any eighteenth-century-inspired style neo-Georgian, Colonial, Louis XVI, Sheraton, Chippendale, Adam or Hepplewhite. The rich, intricate decoration of Tiffany's English King pattern reflects the luxurious entertainments given during the latter part of the eighteenth century and will enhance and give a sense of occasion to present-day settings. Designed by Charles Grosjean (1841-1888). Grosjean worked in his family's firm which produced high end silverware to prominent New York City retailers, including Tiffany. Upon his father's death, Grosjean left his family firm to become superintendent of Tiffany's silver factory in 1868. Vintage Tiffany Co. Sterling Silver and 18-Karat Gold Pen by Jean Schlumberger
By Jean Schlumberger, Tiffany Co.
Located in North Miami, FL
This vintage stunning, signed and rare Tiffany Co. sterling silver and 18-karat gold pen was designed by Jean Michel Schlumberger in the 1970s. He was a French jewelry designer well known for his work with Tiffany Co. It is hallmarked "Schlumberger T.&C. 725" His designs were a remarkable form of whimsy and interruptions of natural forms. Much of his inspiration came from sea creatures, animals and nature. This is reminiscent of a form of cactus perhaps. It has dimension and testure. It has been quoted that the late great Diana Vreeland wrote and expressed that Schlumberger appreciates the miracle of jewels and that this was a doorway to his dreams. He passed away in August of 1987. This has just recently been sent to Tiffany in NYC...

Questions About Tiffany Co. Furniture

Many collectors believe that Tiffany silver is worth it. In 1868, Tiffany Co. gained international recognition when it became the first U.S. firm to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. From then on, it belonged to the pantheon of American luxury brands. During the 19th century, its designs for silver tableware, ceremonial silver, flatware and jewelry were highly sought-after indicators of status and taste. Although now known just as widely for its jewelry, Tiffany Co. remains a leading name in silver wares and is renowned for its classic patterns, such as Jardin, Hampton, Provence and Padova. However, whether or not it’s worth investing in Tiffany silver is totally subjective! At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection. Find Tiffany Co. silver and other silver objects on 1stDibs.

The legendary American luxury house Tiffany Co. is currently owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), which completed the acquisition of the company in January, 2021. The firm started out modestly — Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded it in Connecticut as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” in 1837, at a time when European imports still dominated the nascent American luxury market. Upon Charles’ death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. On 1stDibs, find authentic Tiffany Co. pieces from some of the world's top sellers.

Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Astors and members of the Russian imperial family all wore Tiffany Co. jewels. And Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis preferred Tiffany china for state dinners at the White House. No, Tiffany Studios no longer makes lamps. On the secondhand market, antique Tiffany Studios table lamps and other decorative glass objects are the most recognizable and prized of the manufactory’s works.

The hand-crafted kerosene and early electric lighting fixtures created at Tiffany Studios now rank among the most coveted decorative objects in the world. Tiffany designs of any kind are emblematic of taste and craftsmanship, and Tiffany glass refers to far more than stained-glass windows and decorative glass objects. The iconic multimedia studio’s offerings include stained-glass floor lamps, chandeliers and enameled metal vases

The name Tiffany generally prompts thoughts of two things: splendid gifts in robin’s-egg blue boxes and exquisite stained glass. In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany co-founded the former — Tiffany Co., one of America’s most prominent purveyors of luxury goods — while his son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, is responsible for exemplars of the latter.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was undoubtedly the most influential and accomplished American decorative artist in the decades that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And while the lion’s share of credit for Tiffany Studios table lamps and other fixtures has gone to Louis, it was actually Clara Driscoll (1861–1944), an Ohio native and head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department for 17 years, who was the genius behind the Tiffany lamps that are most avidly sought by today’s collectors.

Yes, Tiffany lamps and Tiffany jewelry are related. Tiffany Co. was established in Connecticut in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young. Charles had launched the company’s famed catalogue, the Blue Book, and, with it, the firm’s signature robin’s-egg blue in 1845. In 1853, Tiffany and Young shifted their focus to fine jewelry. At the start of the Gilded Age, in 1870, Tiffany Co. opened its flagship store at 15 Union Square West in Manhattan. While Tiffany Co. gained renown all over the world for its designs for silver tableware, ceremonial silver and other objects, its jewelry was also a highly sought-after indicator of status and taste. Upon Charles’s death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. Earlier, in 1885, Louis had founded the Tiffany Glass Company, a glassmaking firm, that began producing the lamps commercially in 1895. It evolved into Tiffany Studios in 1902. Louis brought his decorative eye inspired by nature to the Tiffany stained-glass lamps as well as organic jewelry designs.
