Nautical compass mounted by a brass gimbal into a copper brass bound case with sloping glazed aperture with heavily bevelled glass. Flat brass bezel with five holding screws signed ‘E.S.Ritchie’ and numbered 5779. Side opening compartment for a lighted wick with drawer beneath.
The compass is mounted in a heavy painted brass bowl with very fine copper pivot supporting the floating direction card. A diaphragm is located in the base of the bowl for temperature compensation. c.1910
E.S.Ritchie founded the business in 1850 to manufacture mechanical, electrical and scientific instruments. In 1857 he turned his attention to navigational instruments and begun making marine bearing compasses for the U.S.Navy before the American civil war. At the time the British admiralty dry mounted nautical compasses were considered by all navies and commercial shipping companies as the highest technological standard of the day, however, in 1860 Ritchie had received a US patent for the first successful and practical liquid-filled marine compass for general use. Mortar made of bronze with an enlarged mouth and a cone shaped body developed without discontinuity and with a decreasing diameter to the base; It has two handles or "pieces" towards the smooth decorative moldings that it has on the upper part. The piece presents, almost on the edge, an inscription (I AM FROM D GREGORIO OCANA ANO DE 1823) in capital letters and a date in roman with spaces between them; and the text (the other way around) “Mazon fecci”; both flanked by a simple molding above and another below.
This large-sized mortar is of the type that is usually known as "hospital" because it is usually used for medicines in environments with many patients or in important apothecaries. Typologically, it follows the usual line in these examples of the Spanish school during the 19th century: smooth, with moldings and, as a general rule, without those ribs (or derivatives thereof) that used to appear in the previous ones. Compare, for example, with the large pharmacy mortar in the Municipal Museum-Archive of Calella (with inscription, ribs and human heads as handles), a large pestle...

Pair of polychrome pine wood carvings that represent two children in an attitude of playing a musical wind instrument, both seated, with their hands towards their faces, and slightly raising one leg to add some movement to a posture that, otherwise, it would be perhaps too static. Due to their postures and attitudes, they would be part of a large and quality altarpiece, judging by the size, the details, the hair, the proportions, etc., elements in which the musical angels were not something strange. Note that those present do not have wings, calling themselves in these cases "putti" and being, in the same way, figures of habitual presence in religious environments despite having emerged from Renaissance classicism and its sources from Antiquity. The proportions of the sizes, the anatomy, the symmetry, the certain plasticism of the hair, etc. are elements that speak of an influence of Neoclassicism in these sculptures. Likewise, a certain resemblance to works from the 18th century of the Castilian school can be appreciated."
