This antique chest from France has a black marble top which rests atop a wooden chest consisting of two drawers flanking between canted front side posts, and raised upon four legs (cabriole at front with squared at rear), and a subtle break-front design that carries through from the marble top, down the case and onto the swag-carved front apron. Neoclassical style hardware embellishes the front side posts, center of skirt, front feet and drawer fronts (ring pulls with escutcheon). The black marble top with grey veining contrasts nicely against the primarily stormy sea-blue scraped finish with bits of wood and white gesso that show through from beneath. This antique chest from France features a rectangular-shaped gray marble top, over case which houses four drawers (upper drawer is disguised within the top frieze), flanked within a pair of rounded column style front side posts, a straight skirt, and presented upon rounded front feet and block style feet at rear. Beautiful brass accents adorn the chest all down its front facade; from the foliate embellishments across the top and again at the bottom of the legs, the nicely decorated knob pulls and escutcheons on the drawer fronts, and finally the wrapped banding on the top and bottom of the columns. The marble is a medium gray with lighter and darker veining, which is a lovely contrast against the gorgeous fruitwood. A French Neoclassical commode, with hidden secretary and original hardware, from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. This antique commode from France gives the appearance of being a three drawer chest at first glance. However, discreetly hidden behind the upper "drawer" is in fact a fall-front, which opens to reveal a small writing desk with three open cubbies for organization within. The lower portion of the chest houses two full-sized drawers. The rectangular-shaped top has pronounced and rounded front corners, which carry through down the side posts and are flute-carved. Each drawer front is adorn with brass trim and retains the original brass (and really great) hardware; a pair of rectangular bail pulls with a beautiful Neoclassic escutcheon set at center. This commode is presented upon conical legs with exaggerated tops that canopy over their tapered feet. The rich fruitwood has a wonderful old patina throughout.
