“The 19th century painter Anders Zorn was a big influence for me on this work. I was looking at his 'Dance in Gopsmor Cottage' while painting, and trying to limit myself to brushes no small than an 8. I am quite satisfied with the light effect I achieved.
As you can see I really boosted up the highlight on those stockings! It was a case where the sun had streamed in through an east light window (unwelcome at the time), rendering the model's legs impossibly bright. I've used a very thick impasto and even some cadmium lemon to try and convey the impression of light I was seeing. While executing this painting it occurred to me that this was the kind of unusual lighting...

"While staying at the Forbes' Trinchera Ranch in southern Colorado, I was intrigued by seeing this heavy cloud layer every morning hovering below Mt. Blanca's impressive peak of 14,351 feet. The cloud layer created an atmospheric division between the cool shadows below and the bright, warm light above."

The artist's particular bold, broad brushwork magnifies a sense of epic in this pristine scene. The painting exemplifies the American West as an expansive land of free spirit and boundless possibilities. Description
William Stout is a multi-media artist who has won numerous awards for his artwork in pulp fiction, dioramas for natural museums, and film work, including two Conan movies, Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Pan’s Labyrinth. Stout’s painting, Brunhilde, represents a compilation of the artist’s interests and was inspired by the 19th-century composer Richard Wagner’s epic opera, The Ring of the Nibelung, as part of an art project with the Los Angeles Opera’s 2010 performance of The Ring. The subject, Brunhilde, is based on Norse mythology from the Medieval Poetic Edda and represents the story of a beautiful warrior maiden, a Valkyrie, who was cruelly deceived by her lover. Her father, the supreme god Odin, punished Brunhilde for disobeying him and caused her to fall into everlasting sleep surrounded by a wall of fire. The hero, Siegfried, crossed through the flames and woke the maiden with a kiss. In Stout’s version, Brunhilde is seen as a mighty Shieldmaiden and Valkyrie in the forest surrounded by spirit animals. The barred owl...
