The magnificent spider brooch will be sent along with the photo of Chita wearing the brooch during the American Theater Wing's television program "Working In The Theatre #205, Production: "Kiss of the Spider Woman" from 1993. We have also included a video clip of Chita in the program wearing the brooch. Over the years, amidst the rehearsals, previews and run of Chita Rivera's Kiss of the Spider Woman were publicity and press events. In keeping with costume designer Florence Klotz's spectacular wardrobe for Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chita wore a variety of "spider-themed" jewelry and accessories. This fabulous large white spider brooch worn by Chita Rivera is a treasured item of Broadway Musical Theater History. We are honored to be able to present it to you here.
Kiss of the Spider Woman, directed by Harold Prince opened on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre on May 3, 1993 and closed on July 1, 1995 after 904 performances. Scenic design and projection design by Jerome Sirlin, costume design by Florence Klotz, and lighting design by Howell Binkley. The production starred Chita Rivera who won the Tony Award for her performance.
Chita Rivera was a legendary Broadway star whose remarkable career has redefined musical theatre. With a dynamic presence, extraordinary talent, and groundbreaking performances, Rivera is best known for creating the roles of Velma Kelly in Chicago and Anita in West Side Story as well as her legendary performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
A two-time Tony Award© winner and multiple nominee, Rivera's career spanned over six decades, making her one of the most influential figures in musical theatre history. Her electrifying dance skills, powerful vocals, and undeniable stage charisma made her a beloved icon. From The Rink to Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chita Rivera continued to captivate audiences with her versatility and passion for performance.
A trailblazer for Hispanic women in theatre, Rivera's impact extends far beyond the stage. She's inspired countless artists, earning recognition for her contributions to the arts and mentoring the next generation of performers.
Whether on Broadway or in concert halls around the world, Chita Rivera will always be held as a defining force in theatre, celebrated for her exceptional talent, legacy, and unwavering dedication to the art of musical performance.
Provenance: The spider brooch came directly from the estate of Chita Rivera. It will be sold with the black mesh jewelry bag in which Chita kept it. It will also be sent with the photo of Chita wearing the brooch.
The spider brooch is 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) wide and is 1 inch (26mm) tall.
The faux pearl body is 20mm in diameter.
The brooch is signed "Carolee Limited Edition 1992."
