Rockwell makes paintings that live on the borders between traditional art practice, design, technology, and science. He enjoys the visual potential inherent in each of these interests; art history as an aggregate of thousands of years of representation, letterforms as brushstrokes of language, layering as a palimpsest of life lived, simple algorithms that give rise to complex forms in nature.
Rockwell uses 3D printing to assemble computer modeled surfaces on both canvas and wood panels. Art historical references and figuration share space with pattern, texture and grid systems. This process also enables him to dive deeper through iteration (working in series, recombining elements) so that connections and themes emerge between individual paintings over time.

Sara Crisp embeds found organic objects such as starfish, butterfly wings and fossils into the wax surfaces of her paintings. They have often been compared to medieval reliquaries, fossilized amber, and naturalist’s journals. Although the placement of the component objects is carefully planned, she comes across these artifacts by chance. This duality between control and spontaneity is prominent in her work. The result is visually seductive and symbolically suggestive, balancing scientific objectivity and romantic subjectivity. Her work comes across as precise, even clinical, at times, their surfaces scored and traversed by carefully measured lines and geometric forms. Carefully fashioned, polygonal sections of mica, a transparent mineral, cover the center of each painting.

Another highlight of Gordon’s recent career is her collaboration with Ward Hooper, a noted illustrator and painter from Long Island. The result of this collaboration is a book called “Parallel Perspectives : The Brush/ Lens Collaboration,” with a forward by Peter Pitzele, Ph.D., a teacher and author, and a preface by Denise A. Bibro, Director of Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC. This collaboration continues a long tradition of Long Island coupled artists creating and experiencing art using Long Island as an incubator for creativity. One particular Long Island partnership that inspired Holly and Ward was of renowned twentieth century artist, Arthur Dove, and his wife, painter Hellen Torr. Other couples of artists connected to Long Island such as Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock and Elaine and Willem de Kooning were also inspirational for the two. These pairings were a testament of the richness of place and history of Long Island that should always be remembered and celebrated.
