"Shield" Converted 1970s Ruby
Diamond Cufflink Ring in 14 Karat White Gold

The face of this bold, modern ring started off in life as a cufflink,* probably made in the early 1970s.
Originally set with a not-aging-very-well black star sapphire, Eytan replaced it with a nice 1.02 carat natural ruby cabochon. The diamonds are original -- clean little full cut brilliants, earth-mined and untreated, weighing approximately 0.03 carats each.
The wide split shoulders flare out a bit at the sides to form a carinated single shank that tapers to a width of 4mm at the back.
Currently a size 7, Eytan will resize at no additional charge for full-price buyers.
All metal is 14 karat white gold.
This ring weighs 12.4 grams.

This one-of-a-kind pendant by Eytan Brandes features a freeform slice of gold, set with a diamond, over a freeform slice of goshenite.
Goshenite is a variety of beryl -- basically aquamarine without color. We acquired a little pile of this stuff -- the palest of pale blue and oddly cut -- and were at a loss as to what to do with it until Eytan hit on the idea of setting one of them in a bezel with an oxidized (blackened) inside pan. We love the end result. The swirly pattern of the oxidization plus the faceting plus the minute coloration of the stone combine to give this humble gem a truly unique, shimmery look -- worthy, even, of a hearty "Gosh!" (if anyone actually said "gosh" anymore...)
By contrast, the diamond, bezel-set to float in the opening of Eytan's 18 karat gold shard, involves absolutely no hanky-panky. It's an earth-mined, natural and untreated stone weighing 0.04 carats -- a small but high quality sparkler (Eytan rates it G-H color and VS2 clarity).
The hand-wrought pulled wire bale is roughly oval-shaped and oversized, since Eytan envisioned his pendant would be paired with beads (which generally require a bigger bale than a chain), but removable. We think our choker-length strand of faceted but rough sapphire...

This new ring by Eytan Brandes is a design he made for one of our long-time customers in platinum with diamonds as an engagement ring. He made an extra copy in 18 karat gold because he wanted a nice setting for a yellow sapphire he's had for several years.
Prior to setting the stone, we had it certified by GIA, which confirmed the weight and dimensions, as well as the origin (Sri Lanka). Most important, the report confirms the stone hasn't been subjected to beryllium diffusion, which is the current scourge of the sapphire and ruby trade. The stone has been heated, which is customary and creates permanent improvement in the stone's color, but it has not been filled, chemically altered, or otherwise augmented in any way.
The sapphire's intense golden yellow really sparkles thanks to a nice mixed cut (brilliant cut faceting on the crown and step cut faceting on the pavilion). The tiny blue sapphires (totaling less than 0.06 carats), set in little "leaves" on the sides, present some nice unexpected contrast.
The band is slender and carinated (i.e., knife-edged), so it's actually thicker (1.8mm) than it is wide (1.6mm).
A very striking, comfortable ring, in rich 18 karat yellow gold. The total ring weight is 3.9 grams.

This unusual chain is a segment from an 18 karat gold 40" long necklace that one of our customers inherited from a great-great-great-blah-blah aunt. We know it's European, because her people immigrated from Poland, and we know it's at least a hundred years old (by the number of "greats" in front of the distant aunt) but that's about it. The mark on the original clasp just says "18K," with no tasty hallmarks to help with identification.
We've never seen a chain like this. It resembles a book chain, but the construction is different. Basically, it's two lengths of rolo-style cable chain connected to each other by horizontal oval loops with links on each end. It's got great, loose-snaky movement, and every other center loop has been stamped with a bubbly pattern, just to give it a little more visual oomph.
We're going to cut this chain down for various projects because it doesn't really work as a necklace. (It's the kind of thing you'd wear with your metals of office, which you don't have, and neither does anyone else.)
Project numero uno is this one-of-a-kind, absolutely unique bracelet, which combines the chain with a fantastic vintage 14 karat box clasp, salvaged from an ugly bead bracelet, that's been sitting around the shop just waiting for this chain to come along. It's a big oval box clasp set with a chewy chrysoprase cabochon, nicely cut, great color, and about 15 carats.
The clasp is stamped "585" and "14" on the back, along with the maker's mark (MG) for Manchu Gems, which was a Hong Kong jeweler that produced a lot of distinctively "oriental" jade, coral and chrysoprase jewelry...

Eytan's latest hamsa is a redo of an earlier design. We call this design his Melee Muncher because it's the perfect platform for recycled diamonds -- stones extracted from jewelry that customers have brought in for melt value. These diamonds range in color and clarity and are generally fairly pedestrian -- in the SI range with a couple of VS2's -- but they're perfect for this pendant because, with the black background and the tight pavé, they can't help but pop. We love the idea of putting these stones to good use, and we love the way the mix of clarities and colors looks in such a tight formation.
Two of the diamonds are single cuts and at least two are transitional (high crowns and tiny tables). The rest are full cuts. They range in size from 1mm to 2.5mm; the total carat weight for all 25 diamonds of 0.65 carats.
The pendant is 14 karat rose gold with a satiny finish and a nice big top ring that will accommodate lots of different chain options, but we like our new garnet and rough diamond bead strand.

Many of our customers bring us their old jewelry to be melted down so that we can apply the scrap gold credit to the price of their new custom pieces by Eytan Brandes. During this process, Eytan plucks out the precious stones and sorts them according to a system nobody but he understands.
This ring was fashioned by Eytan specifically to use up his pile of extracted yellow diamonds, all taken from various pre-owned pieces over a period of around 25 years. They're in various shades ranging from pale yellow to fancy yellow to golden yellow-brown. (And there's two small champagne-colored diamonds thrown in the mix, just to keep everyone on their toes.)
This is a mish-mash of round stones -- all different sizes, colors and clarities. Most are full (i.e., brilliant) cut, but a few are mixed cuts. They're pavé-set on an oxidized (black) landscape over the slightly concave front of a naturalistic and freeform 18 karat yellow gold ring. Eytan calls it his Lava Pool ring...

This delicious ring by Eytan Brandes was actually completed back in 2019, but it was originally set with an opaque green stone. We liked the way it looked, but the stone was problematic since we weren't sure if it was green agate, jadeite or nephrite and once it was set, we couldn't test it (oops). After a lot of backy forthy, Eytan decided it was too weird to be listing a ring with an unidentified "green stone," so he popped it out* and decided it would be fun to contrast the top quality, sparkling pink rubies with their cousin from the wrong side of the tracks: a rough ruby.
This kind of ruby is completely natural and completely loaded with every flaw under the sun: silk, uneven color, spider veins, milky streaks, fissures, fractures, you name it.
We love rough rubies (and rough sapphires too). Yes, they can be hard to cut (our gemcutter does NOT love them) because you have to find enough material that isn't threatened by internal fractures, but once they're successfully cut into cabochons, they polish up beautifully and, like all rubies, they are reliably durable. Even though they're effectively opaque (because they're so chock full o'flaws), they have a lustrous depth and character that you just won't find with either naturally opaque OR transparent stones.

This hamsa is one of Eytan Brandes' older designs, but he has realized it in many different iterations over the years, always keeping it fresh.
In shimmery, satin-finished 18 karat yellow gold, this latest version is the first time he's tried opening up one side.
The other side is pavé-set with 25 diamonds. In keeping with tradition, he used all different size stones because this design is one of Eytan's favorite ways of using diamonds from Eytan's Big Box o' Recycled Diamonds! These are stones, mostly of average or below average clarity -- pulled from the thousands of pieces of jewelry that have come through the store over the years on their way to be melted and made by Eytan into something better.
The stones used for this pendant range in size from 0.8mm to 2.2mm for a total diamond weight of 0.78 carats. Eytan used diamonds that would be considered "slightly included," avoiding the ones that would be classified as "included." (In other words, he used SI1-2's and avoided the I's, with the exception of the stone at the very top, which is a straight I2.)
Most of the stones are full cut, but since a lot of these diamonds came from older jewelry, there are a few single cuts as well.
Meticulously set, everybody gets their job done, especially set against yellow gold, which can't help but elevate their color.
All stones are earth-mined, natural and untreated.
We love putting these stones to good use, and we love the way a bit of careful sorting can bring stones from 25 different pieces of uninspired jewelry together to act as a unified team in something new, beautiful and wearable. Go team!
