Baroque Colonial Large Rectangular Sunburst Mirror in Hardwood Gold Leaf, 1925
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Baroque Colonial Rectangular Sunburst mirror made in hardwood and gold leaf in Peru in the twenties is nothing less than spectacular! This mirror is made in worked hardwood, plaster, terracotta bull and gold leaf sheets. While the style is inspired in Baroque colonial sunburst mirrors, the technique is Peruvian executed by Peruvian artisans in the 1920’s decade. This can be seen in the rich texture and gold detailing. The glass is original also. The mirror is in its original condition and while it has some minor dents and small pieces of plaster missing (as detailed in the pictures), the piece looks spectacular and has a lot of character. A gorgeous piece like this would look wonderful in any traditional, transitional, rustic, or even French country modern...

Brazilian Modern Credenza in Hardwood Brass Handles, Jean Gillon, 1960s
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year. The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys. There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. The credenza is showcased in our showroom next to Jorge Zalszupin’s bar cart...

Brazilian Modern Coffee Table "Acqua" in Wood Glass, Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1955
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this one-of-a-kind Brazilian Modern coffee table model ACQUA made in Ebony wood and glass by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1950s, Brazil is nothing less than spectacular. There are three reasons why this iconic piece is so special: First, the coffee table (swivel structure and glass) haven't been altered. This specific design is very fragile resulting in very few of these existing today in its original shape. The wood has only been repainted and the glass has a couple of dents but besides that, the coffee table is in excellent condition. Second, this iconic design is one of Scapinelli most renowned, appearing in countless publications, such as Casa e Jardim publications (Brazil House Garden) as well as Giuseppe Scapinelli’s book (images attached). Attached images Lastly, the piece is truly a masterpiece of design. The organic shape of the base truly evokes its name ACQUA (water in Italian) and the base can swivel on its axis changing dramatically in appearance looking like a different piece. The coffee table is showcased in our showroom next to a pair of Carlo Hauner armchairs, a Jorge Zalszupin Pullman Sofa...

Mid-Century Modern Dining Table in Tubular Chrome Wood by Geraldo Barros, 1970
By Geraldo de Barros
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this midcentury dining table with chrome tubular base and wood is a showstopper! The wood has been refinished, the metal cleaned up and the overall piece is in excellent condition. The table fits 4-6 people comfortably as shown in the pictures. This piece has all the fun aspects of a true bold Mid-Century Modern piece -- clean, angular swooping lines that give the piece an almost googie look that is unmistakably Mid-Century Modern. This table effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, chinoiserie, or Hollywood Regency styled home or office as well. This table was found in a private office in Curitiba (the capital of Parana, a southern state in Brazil) where all the furniture was from Geraldo de Barros for Hobjeto. About the author: Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was one of the key players of the Modernist movement in Brazil in the 1950s. Originally a painter close to the European avant-garde and the Pioneer of abstract photography in Brazil in the 1940s (his works are part of the MoMa collection), Geraldo de Barros went to furniture-making in the early 1950s, seeking a more popular artform that would make his work available to a larger audience - which was more or less the IDEA behind the Bauhaus movement. In 1954, he founded the company Unilabor with a Dominican priest and skilled tradesmen. Unilabor was run by its employees and all benefits shared between them, thus becoming the first communitarian business in Modern Brazil history. Unilabor grew quickly to become one of the most important furniture companies in the country, but internal disputes led to the end of the company in 1967. In 1964, De Barros went on to found in association with Aloísio Bione another furniture design company called Hobjeto. After Unilabor, Hobjeto was a more capitalistic project but without losing his constructive characteristics. Until his retirement in 1989, de Barros designed and projected in-numerous furniture lines in this Industrial manner. He even built a personal workshop in the factory to project and create his last painting series in Formica. The furniture and the paintings are finally created using the same techniques. Brazilian Modern “Jangada” Armchair Stool in Hardwood Leather, Jean Gillon
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Brazilian Modern “Jangada” lounge chair with stool in hardwood & leather by Jean Gillon designed in the 1960s is absolutely gorgeous! The chair's name, "Jangada," was named after the small rustic fishing boats used by fishermen along the northern coast of Brazil. The “purplish” tone of the wood chair contrasts nicely with the iconic caramel leather upholstery, adding to its luxurious and elegant appearance. The upholstery took three months to make and was done by some of the best upholsters in Rio de Janeiro following Gillon’s upholstery methodology (as is showcased in the vintage publications attached). Remains of the manufacturing seal can be seen in the wood base. The nets are new. Owning a "Jangada '' lounge chair is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This chair is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. Beyond its physical beauty and unique design, the "Jangada" lounge chair also embodies the Brazilian spirit, an specific aspect of Brazilian Modernism that can be seen in other brazilian icons like Sergio Rodrigues, the Tres Pies chair of Joaquim Tenreiro or the Canoa sofa of Liceu de Artes e Oficios. The gorgeous set is showcased in our showroom next to a Novo Rumo rosewood credenza, a bar cart designed by Geraldo de Barros and the convo looks nothing less than spectacular Size: H32.5, W36, D41.5, SH15.5 (in) H82.5, W91.4, D105.4, SH39.4 (cm) Jean Gillon is a Brazilian furniture designer born in Romania in 1919.
