This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us.

All handcrafted in Europe in the late 1800s this striking chair is another perfect example of the highest level of workmanship that furniture makers and sculptors were combining in those days. This marvelous chair has everything that you want to see in antique and decorative art. The overall design is perfectly balanced and the frame of this chair is solely made out of a beautifully warm colored, solid walnut. Besides that this unique chair is as strong and stable as the day it was handcrafted and very comfortable to sit in. Both the beautiful walnut and the stunning antique fabric are in very good to excellent condition. However, what makes this antique chair a real masterpiece are the glorious animal carvings. Firstly, the good size lion head on the front rule comes with majestic manes and his eyes have a human-like quality to them. Secondly and most importantly are the amazing swan head and tail sculptures. Swan head sculptures in wood are extremely rare and to have found a chair with a pair of perfectly hand carved and mint condition swan heads (and necks) as armrests and with tails on either side of the backrest more than made our day. If you have a good eye for rare details then, we think, you will especially love the perfect nose holes, but also the hand carved wooden swan tail-ends. With swans symbolizing a number of great qualities and combined with the elements of water and air also being a symbol for eternal life and the circle of life, they embody a deeper meaning that makes this antique simply exquisite. Decorative Pair of Hand Carved and Hand Painted Horse Sculptures

Stunning and unique pair of matching horse sculptures.
With a combined experience of almost 30 years in the antiques trade, we were thrilled to once again find beautifully hand-crafted and decorative antiques that we had never seen before. From the density and the weight we can see and feel that these highly decorative horse sculptures are made of a tropical hardwood. Like, for example, with antique mirror frames or church sculptures these horses too were first covered with a mixture of chalk and glue so that the paint would hold longer. And, as so often is the case with antiques, the colors that were used for painting these horses are so much more beautiful than anything you find in this day and age that they truly are an absolute joy to look at. From the colors, the wear, the materials and the techniques that were used to create these horses we can see that these are 19th century antiques. However and unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be able to tell you from which country these highly decorative and sizeable works of art originate. We just can't find matching style horse sculptures anywhere on the worldwide web. They could be Chinese or Nepalese, but they could also be Persian or Arabian. We just have not been able to find out. What we do know is that they are definitely antique, they are in beautiful condition (with some wear, consistent with their age), they are highly decorative, probably unique and they have a look and feel that will instantly change the atmosphere of the room they are in.
Mind you, our sharp price for this wonderful pair of horse sculptures...
