Rare and good condition, Gothic-art shrine for standing or wall-hanging.
This handsome and decorative, Gothic wall shrine is completely hand-crafted out of solid oak and it will look awesome, no matter where you decide to mount or place her. It must have taken its creator quite a few days to first draw this intricate design on paper and then hand carve the entire piece out of solid oak. The Gothic Style elements are deeply handcarved in both doors and they make this shrine highly decorative and an absolute joy to own and look at. This cabinet chapel (or chapel cabinet) comes with its brass lock in perfect working order and also with its original gothic style key. The handgrip is in fact a Gothic trefoil symbol (for the trinity). What also makes this piece extra attractive is the Gothic church window-like frame behind the doors. This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. One of a kind and all handcrafted sculpture.
As many of you will know, the Pietà, depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of mother Mary after the crucifixion. Over the years we have seen this famous biblical scene portrayed in all kinds of materials, but this is the first time we have seen it in glazed and partially colored ceramic. The artist whom created this unique sculpture perfectly captured the sadness and despair of Mary and the disciples by her side. The care with which they are touching and holding the body of Christ also shows their love and affection for Jesus. Anyone who has ever lost a soul mate or a loved that really meant the world to them has an idea of what Mary and the disciples are going through here.
