Smith, a steam ship captain in the civil war, built the first air / screen grain cleaner. Having returned to Ohio after the war, Smith became interested in a small water powered flour mill and needed a wheat cleaner. Lacking the funds and credit, Smith built his own cleaner, and in 1869 the first fanning mill using a vertical air blast principle was put into operation. From his naval background Smith named his new machine “Clipper” after the very fast and advanced sailing ships of the time. Smith moved on from the flour mill business and turned his interest with the help of his new cleaner to becoming a grain buyer and trader. His success in that business stimulated the idea of further developments to the cleaner. And in 1879, ten years after the first, Smith had built 20 hand operated Clippers and sold them in the surrounding counties in Northern Ohio. By 1891 having built some 200 Clipper cleaners Smith thought he had hit his peak. He also thought he had saturated the market. Not able to foresee the future and wanting to retire, he sold his little cleaner business to Albert T. Ferrell who had been an employee for eight years. By the time just prior to World War Two more than twenty thousand various models of Clipper cleaners had been produced by the A.T. Ferrell company. Today it's estimated that sixety thousand Clipper cleaners have been produced and placed into operation worldwide over the last 150 years. Many of those have long been forgotten and lost to time, especially the older models, but surviving examples are still recognizable in barns, museums, feed mills and seed plants around the world. Antique French Paris Porcelain Bourdois Bloch Meissen Style Parrot Figure
By Bloch Bourdois, Porcelaine de Paris
Located in Forney, TX
A stunning early 20th century French Belle Époque period Bourdois & Bloch Porcelaine de Paris Meissen style porcelain figure of a parrot. Made in Paris, France, circa 1910, exceptionally executed, exquisitely detailed throughout and displaying brilliant hand painted rich coloring, with a unique pierced beak, realistically modeled with wings slightly open perched atop a naturalistic tree stump base, Signed, underglaze blue crossed arrows mark to lower tree trunk. What truly stands out and is absolutely remarkable is how the maker/artist manged to make this work appear like a completely different sculpture depending on the angle it's viewed from. History: Paris Porcelain (Porcelain de Paris), a term that conjures images of grandeur, elegance, and sophistication; is to France what Dresden Porcelain is to Germany. Porcelain by a variety of makers from a region rather than one maker, it's the collective name given to the various porcelain studios and decorating workshops within and around Paris, France. In this case and many others Porcelain de Paris is also as good if not sometimes better than Dresden, Meissen or Sevres porcelain and is certainly a collectible to look out for. The Bourdoir and Bloch factory was originally founded around 1820 and specialized in producing fine quality porcelain in the style of the famous 18th century factories. This most distinctive figural bird was made by the Paris porcelain factory of Bourdoir and Bloch around 1910. This example bears the August 8, 1887 registered trademark of two blue crossed arrows, used around the time that Eugene Marx Clauss had joined forces with Achille Bloch and Leon Bourdois (who were both collaborators of Samson) and were operating under the name Clauss Co from 1887-1890 in the small factory started by Eugene's grandfather Jean-Marx Clauss in 1788 on rue de la Pierre-Levee in Paris. This Parisian antique porcelain parrot...

As the sacred mount of Lord Shiva, Nandi occupies a revered place in Hindu culture and philosophy. In this blog post, we will delve into the multifaceted significance of Nandi, exploring the spiritual, cultural, and symbolic dimensions that make this celestial creature an indispensable part of the Hindu pantheon. The Vahana of Lord Shiva: Nandi's most prominent role is that of the vahana, or vehicle, of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. In this capacity, Nandi is not just a physical mount but a symbol of unwavering devotion and loyalty. The inseparable bond between Lord Shiva and Nandi signifies the importance of humility, obedience, and dedication on the spiritual path. Symbol of Strength and Virility: Depicted as a powerful and muscular bull, Nandi embodies strength and virility. The bull is a symbol of fertility and abundance in Hindu culture, representing the life-sustaining forces of nature. Nandi's robust form serves as a reminder of the inherent power within all living beings and the vital energy that sustains the universe. Guardian of Shiva's Abode: In many Shiva temples, one often encounters a prominent statue of Nandi positioned at the entrance. This is not merely decorative; it is symbolic of Nandi's role as the gatekeeper to Lord Shiva's abode. Devotees believe that Nandi safeguards the sanctity of the sacred space and acts as a spiritual protector, warding off negative energies. A Beacon of Spiritual Discipline: Nandi's demeanor and presence are reflective of spiritual discipline and meditation. Often depicted in a state of deep contemplation, Nandi serves as an inspiration for seekers on the spiritual path. The bull's stillness and focused gaze symbolize the importance of inner reflection and concentration as essential components of the journey toward self-realization. Cultural and Artistic Significance: Beyond its spiritual and religious connotations, Nandi holds immense cultural and artistic significance. Sculptors and artists across centuries have crafted intricate depictions of Nandi, showcasing the depth of Hindu artistic heritage. The various poses and expressions of Nandi in art not only tell stories from mythology but also contribute to the aesthetic richness of temples and cultural artifacts. Conclusion: In conclusion, Nandi is far more than a mythical creature or a decorative element in Hindu iconography. As the loyal steed of Lord Shiva, Nandi symbolizes profound spiritual truths, embodying qualities of devotion, strength, and discipline. Whether gracing the entrance of a temple or adorning the altar in a devotee's home, the significance of Nandi extends beyond religious boundaries, touching the hearts and minds of those who seek inspiration on their spiritual journey. Beginning in the early 17th century, grand lanterns such as this were first created and hung in the entrance halls, foyers and/or vestibules of important mansions and manor houses of the aristocratic and affluent classes of Italy, France and Spain. Up until the early 20th century, the entrance hall was considered to be one of the most important spaces in any house. The main reason was that was the most public space in a house, and prior to phones or email, the space into which guests were admitted. Many, such as business people or important tradesmen, seldom went any further into the house. Therefore, that important entryway was designed and decorated with the intent of making the best impression on anyone who might enter it and to ensure they had the highest opinion of the residents of that house. Dimensions: (approx) 32" Tall, 16.75" Wide, 16.75" Deep Condition: Very good antique condition with highly desirable original warm rustic distressed chippy paint patina. Modern lighting and wiring. An extraordinary Louis XV period (1715-1774) French ormolu mounted tulipwood and kingwood marquetry bombé sauteuse commode by master Parisian ébéniste André-Antoine Lardin. circa late 1740s In our 40+ years we have not came across a chest of drawers that captures our attention like this one! Exquisitely hand-crafted in Paris in the mid-18th century, exceptionally executed in opulent and luxurious period King Louis 15th taste, featuring a curvacious serpentine-front bombe-form solid wood case fitted with two drawers, adorned with finely chased, chiseled and gilded bronze doré mounts, including rare and most distinctive sculptural fiolated scroll Rocaille handles, flanking ornate keyhole escutcheons with original key included. Affectionately known to her friends as BJ, led a remarkable life that intertwined a deep passion for music with significant contributions to her community and country. BJ embarked on her vocal journey at the age of 12, studying under the esteemed Mini Ferguson Owens at the University of Wichita. Her pursuit of musical excellence continued in the same institution, where she later attended college. BJ's life was not solely dedicated to music; she also played a vital role in American history. During the tumultuous times of World War II, she contributed her skills to the Cessna AT-17 training program, a crucial effort in preparing pilots for combat. She worked as an electrical wiring diagram analyst for Boeing Engineering Development on the iconic Enola Gay project in 1956. BJ's heart always remained with music. She continued to refine her vocal skills with notable figures such as Maude Douglas Tweedy in New York City and John Charles Thomas in Apple Valley, California. Her love story with Robert Morris Graham Sr., whom she married in 1975, was filled with shared adventures and travels across the globe, living in places from Dallas, Texas, to Pebble Beach, California, and El Paso, Texas. As a trustee of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and a board member of the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra and El Paso Pro-Musica, she played a pivotal role in nurturing the musical landscape of her community. Her support extended to various causes, including the El Paso Opera, Holocaust Museum, Museum of Art, and many more, showcasing her belief in the transformative power of art and culture. Betty Jo Graham's journey through life reflects a profound dedication to her passions, community, and the arts. Her legacy, marked by her music, history, and philanthropy contributions, inspires and impacts many, ensuring that her melodious spirit will be remembered and cherished for future generations. After traveling the globe and living in cities across the country, Graham and her husband, Robert Morris Graham Sr., eventually settled in El Paso, where she served as a trustee of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and a board member of the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra and El Paso Pro-Musica. Though Graham had a lifelong passion for music and played a pivotal role in nurturing the musical landscape of her community, her philanthropy extended to various causes, including the El Paso Opera, El Paso Holocaust Museum and El Paso Museum of Art, showcasing her belief in the power of art and culture. A patron of the arts, Graham was also a collector of fine jewelry, with a particular fondness for eye-catching, statement-making rings, necklaces, earrings and more, and Heritage was honored to present Property from the Estate of Mrs. Betty Jo “B.J.” Graham as part of its Spring Fine Jewelry Signature Auction. Overall outstanding presence, delivered cleaned, waxed, with hand rubbed polished patina, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment! - INTERESTING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This elegant commode typifies the fashion for furniture mounted with exotic and rare woods, exquisite marquetry-work, and decadent Rococo bronzes. Andre Antoine Lardin, also known as N.B. Lardin was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held his master's title from 1 July 1750 and was particularly respected for the exceptional quality of his veneering / marquetry. A well known and regarded maître ébéniste, Lardin’s career is somewhat thinly documented, most likely due to the upheaval and record destruction during the Revolution, notably when the guilds in Paris and elsewhere were abolished in 1791. Lardin worked for various marchand-mercier (furniture dealers) and probably also for a private clientele. He ran his workshop first in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the second-named became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. Lardin is known to have worked for the marchands André-François Carré, this superb commode having almost most certainly been commissioned through the intervention of one of these fashionable dealers. The marchand-mercier André-François Carré, is recorded rue Froidmanteau, "Magasin de glaces, porcelaine ébénisterie et curiosités pour les cabinets d'histoire naturelle." Carré also worked with two vernisseurs (vernis Martin): Porchon and Prévost. All of Lardin's furniture is classic in form and decor, well crafted and mostly veneered in rosewoods or violet wood. Lardin worked in the taste of the time with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as birds, trophies, urns, landscapes, or flowers and sunburts such as this stunning example appear more rarely. The stamp JME stands for Jures Menuisiers Ebeniste and notes the guild affiliation of the master. The Corporation des Menuisiers-Ébénistes was a French craft guild which was concerned with the profession of woodworking. Some JME stamps are worn down from the marble slab over the years and no longer apparent, but in this case lacking the JME stamp is likely indicative of work made prior to reaching maître ébéniste (master cabinetmaker), denoting an early and exceedingly scarce example. Eighteenth century French furniture...

Dimensions: (approx) 31" High, 49" Wide, 24.75" Deep (each) Phyllis Morris was one of the design industry’s first multitaskers. She wore many hats: furniture designer, businesswoman, civic leader, legendary hostess, humanitarian, wife and mother. Phyllis Morris is known for them all, but mostly that last one. The legendary interior designer of the 1950s and ’60s wrote her own rules and lived a life as large and colorful as the designs she favored. Morris began her design career in 1953 in Los Angeles, California by creating the "Poodle Lamp," a sculpture of her own poodle topped with a little flared shade. Dubbed “The Marilyn Monroe of the furniture industry” — she took charge of her destiny with her famous poodle lamp. After sculpting the original, based on her own pink-dyed pup, Morris left it on consignment in a Beverly Hills shop. She had friends place orders for it; the shop asked for a dozen models, and Morris was in business. “I knew I was not a homemaker,” she said. What transformed Morris from lamp designer to “designer to the stars” may have been her instinct for publicity. She reportedly delivered two of the lamps to Liberace, her first big-name customer, in a pink Cadillac convertible, while wearing a mink cape. Morris was a pro at offering provocative quips or outrageous photo-ops, which often made headlines around the globe. “My mom was a marketing genius,” says Morris’ daughter Jamie Adler, who now runs the brand and reintroduced the poodle lamp for Currey & Company last year. “She understood branding and how to get press. She was so brave and fearless as a woman in a male-dominated industry.” At a time when most women stayed home, Morris was a furniture designer, businesswoman, civic leader, legendary hostess, humanitarian, wife and mother. “She was multitasking long before the word was invented,” Adler says. With her colorful and eclectic interiors and over-the-top furnishings, Morris turned the interior design world upside-down, and celebrities came calling. She designed hotel suites frequented by Frank Sinatra, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Elvis. Her opulent canopied beds became a status symbol for the likes of Cher and Sonny Bono, the Who’s Keith Moon, Gladys Knight and Jerry Vale, according to a 1978 People magazine story. A typical Morris room setting during the mid-1960s would find Pop art accessories...
