A substantial, Post-Impressionist harbor scene showing a sun-drenched view of the Port of Vendres in the South of France with sailing boats moored to the wharves and a view beyond towards terracotta roofs against verdant, green hills, all beneath a late sunset sky. A bright and breezy, full-size (24" x 30") giclée of the artist's original oil painting, modeled after the 1905 work by André Derain (French, 1880-1954), now held in the permanent collection of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

An elegant abstract comprising overlapping forms in deep ruby, coral and jade.
Engraver and printmaker, Hiroyuki Tajima was born in Tokyo in 1911 and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1934, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Arts with a specialization in western-style painting. Tajima later studied fabric dyeing under Hirokawa Matsugoro (1889-1952) and woodblock printing with the Sosaku-Hanga artist, Nagase Yoshiro (1891-1978), a founder of the Japan Print Association (Hanga Kyokai). In 1946, inspired by Dada and Surrealism, Tajima joined Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to exploring and reviving the abstract and surrealist painting ideals that had been suppressed during WWII.
Tajima exhibited widely and with success, including with Tokyo's Modern Art Association ( Prix du Nouveau Venu, 1962), the Japanese Engraving Association, the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in Tokyo (1962), the Northwest International Print Exhibition (1962-1964) and the Tokyo International Print Biennale (1964). His work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (British Columbia), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) and the British Museum in London.

Two sets of travelers arrive in the town of Oiso on a bleak, rainy day. The subtitle of the print is "Tora’s Rain," named after the lover of one of the Soga brothers in the Soga Monogatari, an epic tale of revenge set in the twelfth-century. In the story, the Soga brothers commit a massacre to avenge their father’s murder, and are in turn put to death by the shogun. N.B. This is an original etching by Luigi Kasimir and is hand-signed by the artist.
The notable etcher and painter, Luigi Kasimir, attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to colored etching. Kasimir was influenced by Anders Zorn and Karl von Kalckreuth and he furthered his studies with Sigmund L'Allemand.
A pioneer in the technique of hand-colored etching, Kasimir began exhibiting in 1905 and received immediate critical recognition. Starting with a sketch, usually in pastel, Kasimir would transfer the design, by hand, onto as many as six plates, applying the color by hand to each plate. Luigi Kasimir's work is held in private and public collections throughout the world including in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum and Smithsonian Museum, among others.
