"The discovery of fast cars and auto racing rocked my world as a high school student in the early 1960s. After graduating I did everything I could to wrangle assignments to cover two of the biggest international endurance races held annually in Florida. The Daytona 24-Hour and Sebring 12-Hour races were the highlight of my early years as a photographer. Covering racing events in the Sixties was a lot different from what it is today. Access to the racers and the cars was much easier and there were far fewer photographers covering any event. As a fan and a photojournalist in search of a great story, I usually hung around Carroll Shelby’s pit. Shelby and his Cobras were always race winning contenders. “Shel” was easy to work with and to be around. He let me do what I wanted and go where I pleased to capture a story. Patty Carroll is an American photographer who has taught and practiced photography since the 1970’s. Her photography is characterized as vivid and boldly colored. Where her earlier works include typologies and portraiture, her new work symbolically expresses the domestic roles of women, via the series, Invisible Women.
She earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois and in 1972, she graduated with a Master of Science in Photography from the Institute of Design at IIT, Chicago. Since receiving her MS in Photography, Carroll has been teaching photography at universities worldwide. She has been a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College and the Royal College of Art in London, among other schools. Carroll’s photography has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The Art Institute in Chicago, White Box Museum in Beijing, and The Photographers Association in Ningbo, China.
