Richard Marquis for Noble Effort Murrini Vase, American Art Studio Glass
By Richard Marquis
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass vase features cylindrical body with free flowing decor or large murrini and canes on light celadon blue background. The rim is accentuated with light purple glass band, and the colored glass body is encased in clear glass layer in sommerso technique, creating a clear glass base that visually elevates the piece by adding an illusion of floating above the surface. The vase is signed and dated in murrina on the bottom; it stands 10.75" tall. Richard Marquis (b. 1945) studied glass blowing under Marvin Lipofsky, who established a glass program at University of California at Berkeley in 1964. In 1969 Marquis receivied Fulbright grant to travel to Venice to observe glassmaking techniques; following up the advise of Dale Chihuly, who visited Murano on a Fulbright in 1968, Marquis went to Venini glassworks on Murano. As one of the first American studio glassmakers to travel to Italy to study traditional Venetian techniques, Marquis learned about murrine, a canne, and incalmo techniques that he would base his Master of Arts thesis for the University of California on, and later teach to other American studio glassblowers at schools across the country, including Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Following up his experimental works with colorful murrini in 1970s, such as his famous Crazy Quilt Teapot series, Stars and Stripes Acid Capsule, and Lord's Prayer murrina, Marquis created Noble Effort...

Weed Vase with Drip Glaze, American Art Studio Pottery 1980s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with free-flowing drip glaze, hand-placed in circular pattern, accentuating the oversized shoulder and small opening, characteristic of the weed vase form. The Modernist shape of the hand-formed vase lends itself to an Organic Modern style decor; the soft palette of pastel green, blue, and pink is supported by the warm off-white tones of the background glaze, and the rim and opening area are accented in bright, crisp white glaze color. The vase was made by Wizards of Clay, studio pottery in Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. Since 1962 the family-run studio creates traditional pottery in variety of glazes. The vase is clearly signed and dated on the bottom. Sculptural Organic Modern bud vase...

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in contrasting blue and mustard yellow colors. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on ombre colored base, shifting from ligher shade of yellow on top to deep mustard yellow on the bottom, were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece. The vase was made by Wizards of Clay, studio pottery in Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. Since 1962 the family-run studio creates traditional pottery in variety of glazes. The vase is clearly signed on the bottom. Sculptural Organic Modern bud vase...

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Pitcher Vase Mythical Beasts Decor
By Rubboli
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Striking ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli pitcher vase features cobalt, red and gold Lustre majolica glaze decoration. Hand-painted decor follows the traditional shape of the piece, with abstract pattern accentuating the base and the top of the vase, and motifs of mythical beasts surrounding central medallion with another mythical creature. The vase is marked on the bottom; the mark "A.R. Italy" dates the piece to 1936-1975. We are offering a large sculptural vase, decorated n the same style, also by Alberto Rubboli, in a separate listing; the vases can be displayed together for a stunning presentation. The vase is a striking example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century. In late 19th century the collecting craze for Renaissance majolica, especially lusterware, prompted the Italian potters to hunt for the secret formulas that were lost four hundred years earlier. Studios owned by such ceramicists as Cantagalli, Molaroni, Rubboli, Santarella, and others attempted to duplicate antique lusterware pieces for the general public. Each studio developed their own closely guarded formulation. In 1870s Paolo Rubboli...

I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940
By Industria Ceramica Salernitana
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Rare vintage ceramic vase features streamlined cylinder form with slightly flared out rim and graphic decor in off white, teal, black, and yellow palette. The main motif of abstract flowers on a branch, descending from a triangular structure, hand painted in monochromatic black glaze, is juxtaposed with the ombre off white and teal background and an abstracted flock of birds in shades of yellow. The sophisticated Art Deco style flowering branch, with contrasting, clearly defined, angular outline, is softened with rounded, Folk Art or Naive Art style, almost cloud-like bird motifs, asymmetrically placed on one side of the branch. The decor repeats on front and back sides of the vase with slight variations in colors and placements that are consistent with hand-painted nature of the piece. The vase retains obvious hand-formed concentric ridges throughout the whole body that add textural element to the piece and allow for slight pooling of the glazes. The bottom is concave and glazed in off-white, with the unglazed foot, showing pinkish beige clay; it is not a glaze defect, as it was left unglazed intentionally when the vase was placed in the kiln for firing. The vase is signed on the bottom with "Italy I.C.S" and Industria Ceramica Salernitana company's fish mark. It is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate small losses on glaze of the rim and bottom that do not detract from the quality and artistic expression of the vase and can be repaired professionally; please see pictures. I.C.S. was founded in 1927 by Berlin-born Moses Malamerson in Vietri Sul Mar on Amalfi coast in Italy. I.C.S quickly gained recognition by participating in multiple major European and American expositions and art competitions available, attracting many artists that were looking to escape the economic depression and political upheaval of 1930s. I.C.S. can claim the honor of having employed all the famous artists of the German (Tedesco) Period, including Studemann, Irene Kowalski, Hannasch, Richard Dolker...

Linn Phelan Vase, Early American Studio Pottery 1932
By Linn Lovejoy Phelan
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural vintage vase features a bulbous body with pronounced wide rim; it is decorated in complex drip glaze in blue, teal, and green palette with beige pink accents. Parts of the vase near the bottom are intentionally left unglazed to accentuate the unpredictable nature of the drip glazes. The inner surfaces are decorated with the glazes in the same palette, and the inner part of the rim is done with the same drip glaze pattern as the outer surfaces, creating a continuous composition and guiding the eyes of the viewers along the lines of the piece. The vase is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom, "Linn L. Phelan 1932", circling the base, and marked with that appears to be either model or glaze numbers in the center. The date corresponds with Phelan's training under Arthur Baggs; the vase is an important example of Phelan's early work and of early American studio pottery movement. While the form of the vase shows Art Deco style influence, the striking glaze on the piece points towards the distinctive works Phelan created later in his career. We are offering a large ceramic decorative bowl, created by Phelan in 1950s-1960s, in a separate listing. Linn Lovejoy Phelan (1906-1992) was a renowned American ceramic artist, who operated famous Rowantrees and Linwood Pottery in Maine. He studied art in Bevier School of Art of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (now Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, New York, in 1928, and received his BFA in Ceramic Art in Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1932. While attending Ohio State University, Phelan took "Ceramic Art: Survey of the Field" class, taught by Arthur Baggs. After Phelan left the school, he corresponded with Baggs, and in late 1930s Phelan wrote to Baggs of his experiences in helping to start up what becomes Rowantrees Pottery of Blue Hill, Maine. Arthur E. Baggs (1886-1947) studied at Alfred University in 1903-1905 and 1910-1911 with Dr. Charles F. Binns, who was considered "the father of American ceramic art"; Baggs worked at Marblehead Pottery and Cowan Pottery Studio, and became the head of the Ceramic Art Division of the Fine Arts Department at Ohio State University in 1928. Examples of Baggs work are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; and Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. Baggs was an extremely influential figure in early American ceramics; he was given the Binns medal for outstanding achievement, made a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society and a member of Keramos. Through Baggs Phelan was exposed to the foundations of technical creativity and advancements in ceramic art in Alfred University, as well as the early 1900s studio pottery movement in America, linking the Arts and Crafts phase of studio pottery to Modernist movement. In 1940s Phelan started teaching ceramics at School of American Craftsman (SAC), founded by Aileen Osborn Webb at Darthmouth College in 1944; SAC moved to Alfred University in Alfred, New York, in 1946, and to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1950s. In 1940s SAC faculty included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, along with Linn Phelan and another renowned ceramist, Herbert...

Pisgah Forest Oxblood Ombre Vase, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1939
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded vase is decorated with light to dark oxblood red ombre craquelure glaze; the glaze is in high gloss finish and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The vase is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom. Inspired by the Arts Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.
