Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s. Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...

Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bud Vase, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage hand-thrown vase features complex Crater glaze in off-white and espresso brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the vase design. The vase is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery Tenn". The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

Stoin for Burley Winter Pair of Vases, American Art Deco Pottery 1930s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage pair of Art Deco ceramic vases feature matte mottled and splash glaze in green and pastel pink palette. The minimal, but elegant shape of the vases, created in contemporary Art Deco style with strong Arts and Crafts influence, was used as a canvas to explore the effects that can be achieved with different applications of the tints and shades of green colored glaze on the pale pink background. The vases form the cohesive pair that offers an additional visual interest in glaze variations on surface decoration. The vases are marked with the identical model numbers on the bottoms; the definitive attribution can be made by various printed and online resources. The Burley Winter...

Vintage Set of 5 Mini Pitcher Vases, Uranium and Cadmium Glass, Glow in UV, Hand
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 5 vintage mini pitchers or vases consists of 3 red pitchers (one - in matte amberina glass and two - in crackled red), one pitcher in crackled amethyst glass, and one - in crackled warm green glass. Addition of green and amethyst pieces to the set adds interest to otherwise almost monochromatic red palette, while variation and repetition within the pitcher shapes create unity and variety to the composition on display. Crackled glass pieces create texture within minimally shaped pieces. The pitchers were hand blown and have clearly defined pontil marks; they glow in UV light due to use of uranium and cadmium glass...

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Oversized Mug or Vase, NY Art Glass, 1983
By Thomas Buechner III, Vitrex
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Organic Modern oversized mug was hand blown with thin layer of white glass underlying the deep, jewel-like dark purple fused glass in abstract pattern that is swirling around the gentle curves of the piece; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. The central part of the pattern is brough up close to the surface, creating a light texture and adding rare tactile quality to the piece; the upper and lower parts of the pattern are receding into the white background, accentuating the curving sides of the mug. Minimal shape of the piece allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage, and clear glass handle offers minimal distraction from the design while adding functionality. The piece can be used either as a mug or a vase due to large, generous size. The piece is signed and dated in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of vintage Vitrix glasswork would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass...

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

Carl Erickson Sculptural Vase, American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural, heavy Mid Century Modern clear glass decorative vase or vessel was created by Carl Erickson for Erickson Glass Works. The vase is decorated with controlled bubbles that are radiating upwards from its base; asymmetrical, free-flowing rim juxtaposes the regular bubble's pattern, guiding the eye along the lines of the piece. The vase is signed by the artist in etching on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with slight, age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. This piece will work very well in any style of interior or would make a great gift for an art and design enthusiast. Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum. Many of his glass creations have been selected for display at several distinguished museums, and in 1953 a traveling display...

Pisgah Forest Ginger Jar with Lid, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1930s
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded ginger jar with lid features complex green craquelure glaze; the glaze is fluctuating between forest green and deep celadon green hues, is in high gloss finish, and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The jar is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom with one of the earlier, round marks, "N.C. Pisgah Forest West Ashville, Route 19" with the date and potter at the wheel logo (see Kovel's American Art Pottery Marks, p. 149). Inspired by the Arts Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.
