Vintage ceramic or porcelain small teapot is sculpted in shape of a bird or a phoenix, with large head, long wings, rounded tail, and ornate handle on the back. The teapot features traditional blue on white Chinoiserie decor of abstract graphic motifs; the tail, tips of the wings, beak, plumage, and handle are accentuated with solid blue. The teapot is fitted with small round lid; the open beak serves as a pourer.

The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze.
In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. Vintage Art deco style carafe or jug with lid features simple, clean design, the iconic “pretzel” shaped cup handle, and high gloss turquoise glaze. It's a part of El Patio line, attributed to Mary Grant, the first dinnerware line produced by Gladding McBean under their Franciscan Pottery division in 1934. The glaze color, Glacial Blue, is one of the first 8 glaze colorways for the line. El Patio line had three versions of the carafe – one with a wooden handle, one with a ceramic handle, and another with a metal holder; this carafe has the build-in ceramic handle, resulting in streamlined, monochromatic look.
The carafe is marked on the bottom with the oval GMCB mark that was in use from 1934 to 1938. The mark dates the piece to the earliest years of the production of El Patio, one of the five most important California solid colored dinnerware lines of the 1930s, alongside Pacific Hostessware, Bauer Ringware, Metlox 200 Series, and Vernon Kilns Early California.
