Aerial Photographs of San Francisco, George R. Lawrence, 1906 Earthquake
Located in San Francisco, CA
ABOUT
Comparison aerial photographs of San Francisco printed on glossy fine art paper. The first image is an aerial shot of the city taken in 1981 by an unknown photographer. It depicts the harbor and downtown all the way out to Ocean Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge. The second image is taken from the same vantage point. It is stamped, ‘Photograph of San Francisco is ruins from Lawrence Captive Airship 2000 feet above San Francisco Bay. Overlooking waterfront, sunset over Golden Gate.’ There is also a copyright stamp for George R Lawrence. Lawrence used an aerial kite to photograph San Francisco after the devastating 1906 earthquake. His photographs appeared in newspapers around the world and generated more than $15,000 for the photographer.

HISTORY
George R. Lawrence (1868-1938)
After working briefly at a Chicago wagon factory in 1889, George Lawrence opened a studio for the production of crayon enlargements — large photographs, usually portraits, that have been enhanced by pastels or charcoal. Crayon enlargements were popular wall decorations in the late 1800s. In 1893, Lawrence's studio partner left Chicago permanently. Lawrence inherited the equipment and learned to develop negatives from a local photographer's apprentice. He formed the Geo. R. Lawrence Company and quickly became an innovator in the field, using the slogan "The Hitherto Impossible in Photography is Our Specialty."
Lawrence designed his own large-format cameras and specialized in aerial views. He began by using ladders...

DIMENSIONS Sheet: H 25.25 in. x W 28.25 in., Image: H 19.75 in. W 23.75 in.
HISTORY
Sergio Carlo Higinio Gonzalez-Tornero, painter and printmaker, was born in Santiago, Chile on May 22, 1927. The son of diplomats, he studied in Chile, Brazil, and the United States. In 1958 he studied at the Slade School in London before moving to Paris, where he worked at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 and met his wife, fellow printmaker Adrienne Cullom. They settled permanently in New York in 1962, where Sergio and Adrienne worked together at Bob Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop. After visiting the Canadian archipelago of Haida Gwaii, Sergio became fascinated with the arts of the indigenous Haida peoples, finding it to be deeply spiritual: this became and remained a powerful influence in his work.
Principally a printmaker, Gonzalez-Tornero had more than forty solo exhibitions in Chile, Canada, Europe, and the United States. He discussed his printmaking techniques in an essay on page 325 of Fritz Eichenberg’s The Art of the Print.
Gonzalez-Tornero was awarded a fellowship by the New York State Foundation for the Arts in 1987 and a grant from the Adolph and Ester Gottlieb Foundation in 1990. He was a member of and exhibited with the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Boston Printmakers, and the Philadelphia Print Club. His work garnered numerous prestigious awards including the UNESCO Prize at the International Biennial of Prints in Cracow, Poland; first prize at the XII Biennale of Latin American Prints...

ABOUT
An original mixed media photo collage on wood panel.
David Seiler:
"I operate in the space between painting and photograph -- object and print. Collage functions both to break the image down into component parts and to create a cohesive whole. At the heart of my process is the desire to see things differently; to build an image literally in order to come to an understanding of the visceral nature of form."
CREATOR David Seiler, Hudson, New York.
DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1993.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Mixed media photo collage. Toned silver print collage with acrylic charcoal and polyurethane glued on wood.
CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor wear on bottom corner.
