This is a very scarce WWI Work Relief Fund poster featuring the Harvard Radios competing against the Princeton Aviators. The game, held on November 23, 1918, was a benefit football game to raise money for the war effort.
The poster dynamically depicts two football players mid-action. Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. The poster was illustrated by the artist J. Liello. His signature is printed in stone, visible on the left side of the composition.

This bronze medal was originally struck by the U.S. Mint in 1889 as a peace offering to the various Native American tribes in the U.S. The obverse of the medal has a raised relief side profile bust of President Harrison, with the text "Benjamin Harrison President U.S.A. 1889". The reverse of the medal has the word "PEACE" at top, with a scene of a settler and Native American talking in front of a log cabin. Below, a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe are enclosed by a wreath of laurel leaves. This is a 1835 map of “The United States from the Latest Authorities” by Ezra Strong. A hand-colored engraved wall map of the eastern half of the United States, this map has a large inset of the "Oregon District" and several engraved city views and two portraits.
The primary map extends to Mexico Texas and the Missouri Territory, showing the course of the Missouri River to Ft. Mandan and Old Ft. Mandan, and noting many forts along the river. The territories to the east of Missouri Territory are separately delineated as Sioux District and Huron District. The western details of the map are very good for a map of this time period, with many Native American settlements, villages, forts and other details noted.
The map is bordered with vignettes of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. Each vignette notes the date settled, primary settler, and the population as of 1830. The hand-colored map proclaims the Manifest Destiny, with the recent acquisition of Upper California and Texas at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War. The newly acquired land is boldly colored, standing in stark contrast to the rest of the U.S. The map details a potential route for a railroad running from New York City, to Buffalo, to Chicago, then west along the Oregon Trail to Oregon City. This route anticipates the construction of the transcontinental railroad by nearly 20 years.

Presented is the 1847 First Edition of Taylor and His Generals. Published by E.H. Butler & Company, the book has numerous portraits and engravings throughout. It has been beautifully rebound in quarter leather and marble paper boards. The spine has gilt embossed decoration stating that it’s a first edition. The book is housed in a custom-built archival slipcase with a photo of Taylor on the front.
Written and published before Taylor ran for the Presidency, this book would have been a powerful propaganda tool for the soon-to-be 12th President of the United States. The full title page describes the work as “Taylor and His Generals; A Biography of Major-General Zachary Taylor; And Sketches of the Lives of Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs with a full account of the Actions of their Various Divisions in Mexico Up to the Present Time; Together with a Sketch of the Major-General Winfield Scott and an Account of his Divisions in Mexico.”
Taylor fought and commanded troops in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Second of the Seminole Wars before playing a major role in the victory of the Mexican-American War. The book takes the reader through the early life of Taylor and his military career with a particular focus on his surprising victory at the Battle of Buena Vista. Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs that served under Taylor and Major-General Scott each get a chapter dedicated to their own history and military careers

This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. It features a view of the East Coast of the U.S. from Maryland to just below South Carolina. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns.
Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC.

Presented, is an exciting 1981 color lithograph by William “Billy” Phillips. Titled Through the Back Door, the lithograph depicts an American P-47 Thunderbolt pursuing a Luftwaffe bomber on the famous D-Day of WWII. Also referred to as a “Jug,” the P-47 was the largest and heaviest fighter aircraft powered by only one reciprocating engine. It was armed with four machine guns on each wing making it lethal for ground attacks. The busy scene focuses on the diving P-47 with “Miss Behave” painted on the side, but is full of action throughout the work. Providing a sense of movement, the background is blurred with multiple airplanes both in flight and on the ground. Fire and smoke billow from the field putting the viewer in the middle of the dramatic scene.
The artist, William “Billy” Phillips is a renowned aviation and landscape artist. He is well-recognized and has received many awards for his artwork. Early in his career, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordinian Air Force as an artist and later served as the U.S. Combat Artist. The U.S. awarded Phillips the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association’s Americanism Medal. The celebrated artist additionally won the Art History Award twice and is one of the few individuals to be exhibited in a solo show at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.
