SWISS 2000-315" The Edwardian era Like the Georgian and Victorian eras before it, derives its name from the reign of the English King, Edward VII (1901-1910). Edwardian jewelry is known for representing femininity while incorporating a lot of the color white. Think diamonds, pearls and white metals like platinum and white gold. Diamonds often had an Old Mine or European cut and sapphires were a popular choice for a pop of color. They tended to be made from platinum and diamonds – the more, the merrier – and used fashionable, intricate techniques such as filigree and millegrain. Edwardian rings are works of art and best worn alone or alongside a simple wedding band. Mill graining, a new decorative technique made possible by the use of platinum, is featured often on Edwardian jewelry. Its border of delicate balls and ridges surrounding a gemstone or on the knife sharp edges of a design served to give jewelry a softer, lighter look. Guilloché This technique is used in fine jewelry to enhance the appearance of brooches, rings and pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue. Manufacturer: Yves Saint Blaise Retailer: Mappin & Webb Lapis Lazuli: Mount in bezel settings, with 41 oval flat cabochon cuts carved from natural Afghani blue lapis lazuli with a weight of about 65 carats. Weight: 69.65 grams, (44.65 Dwt.). Measurements: Diameter of 58 mm (2.28 inches). Augustin Julia-Plana Augustin Julia-Plana was born in Mataro, near Barcelona, in 1934. In his youth, he was a talented track and field athlete, and in 1954 was the Spanish 4 x 400m relay champion. After military service, he attended art school and then decided to go abroad to pursue his career. In 1963 he joined the Swiss jewelers Simon Schlegel, in Bern, before formally partnering with Schlegel in 1968 as Schlegel & Plana. Julia-Plana and Schlegel enjoyed a successful partnership together, designing and producing jewels for several established European firms, amongst them the French firm of Aldebert, and the Dutch firm of Bonebakker, as well as for watch firms such as Clerc and Yves Saint Blaise. They also counted fashionable women of high society amongst their clients, with Princess Soraya of Iran reportedly being a patron. Julia-Plana was known for using unusual materials in his designs, such as wood, meteorite, maw sit sit, and oxidized iron, selecting materials for their innate beauty rather than monetary value. He won several awards during his career, including multiple German jewelry awards, and four Diamonds International Awards. The De Beers Diamonds International Awards, which began in 1954, was considered the ‘Oscars’ of the jewelry industry, and rewarded beauty, originality, and imaginative use of materials. Julia-Plana won his first Diamonds International Awards in 1965, for a ‘V’ shaped bracelet of structured gold links decorated with diamonds, and won the award a second time in 1967, for a bracelet of shell shaped links, set with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. In 1969 he won the award for two separate designs, one ring set with diamonds and lapis lazuli cubes, and one brooch with tiger’s eye plates and diamonds, and in the same year gained membership of the Diamonds International Academy, joining fellow designers such as Andrew Grima and Gilbert Albert. Julia-Plana's unique and highly regarded designs are rare to see and can be found in the collections of tiffany & co. among others Swiss jewelry houses, with the watchmaker Simon Schlegel and Yves Saint Blaise, as well as under his own name and always are unique pieces. Julia-Plana tragically died at the height of his career in 1979, at age 45, of heart failure. As a note, Julia-Plana's unique and highly regarded designs are rare to see and can be found in the collections of tiffany & co. among others Swiss jewelry houses, with the watchmaker Simon Schlegel and Yves Saint Blaise, as well as under his own name and always are unique pieces, never mass produced. ETRUSCAN REVIVAL 1870 Italian Enameled Locket of a Queen In Gilt With Diamonds
Located in Miami, FL
Italian Etruscan revival locked. This is a gorgeous antique medallion-locket created in Italy in the 19th century, circa 1870. The locket has been made up in an oval shape in the Etruscan revival style and carefully crafted in 18kt gilded brass with high polished finish. The medallion locket is decorated with the inlaid portrait of an ancient Etruscan queen, which is dressed with colorful robes, crowned with a diadem and wearing earrings accented with two rose cut diamonds. The profile of the queen is fully decorated with the difficult polychrome enamel technique, called Peinture sur émail. It is fitted with a three-barrels hinge with a snap lock to open and close and a ring bale to wear in a chain. The craftsmanship of this one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry, is exceptional and well done, and surely this will be a great conversation piece. Country: Europe, Italy. Period & Style: Etruscan Revival 1870. Diamonds: Mount in inlaid settings, with 2 European rose cut diamond, 0.07 carat, white colorless F/G color, VS/SI clarity. Weight: 26.95 Grams, (17.30 Dwt). Measurements: 31 mm by 52 mm by 6 mm (1.22 x 2.05 x 0.24 Inches). Hallmarks: Unmarked as usual. Peinture sur émail technique Peinture sur émail is a French type of painting with enamels. It was developed at the end of the 15th century in Limoges, France. In this technique, a slightly convex, metal plate is covered with a fondant of uniform color which was fired to produce a vitreous base for the drawing. On this, the artist starts applying color after color in thin layers onto the base color with a paintbrush. It is vital that one starts with the colors of the highest flowing temperature to avoid the diffusing of colors at a later stage. Between every step, the intermediate depiction needed to be fired in the oven to fixate the colors, sometimes up to 20 rounds of heating are needed for the final result. In this manner, one was able to rival the oil painters of the day and artists such as Leonard Limousin were in high regard, often even employed by the patrons of the arts. Needless to say, that this type of enameling was no longer in the realm of goldsmiths but belonged to those with exceptional drawing skills. At the end of the 16th century the abundance of workshops that produced these artifacts – these could be a meter high – created a decline in craftsmanship which is usually associated with popular cultures. Like Castellani rescued the micro mosaics from general decline by giving it a new impulse so did Jean Toutin from Blois, France give a new incentive to painted enamel in the early 17th century by introducing miniature paintings on enamel of high quality. In Geneva, Switzerland, there was a culture of painting enamels from the late 15th century as well, but the industry only really started to flourish mid-17th century. They specialized in portraits as in scenery images which soon attracted the attention of customers from all over Europe and beyond. Famous Genevan names of the day were Jean Petitot, Jean Etienne Liotard...

YAACOV AGAM 1970 Paris Kinetic Op-Art Sculptural Circles Necklace In 18Kt Gold
By Yaacov Agam
Located in Miami, FL
Kinetic Op-Art necklace designed by Yaacov Agam (1928-). This is a gorgeous piece of wearable art, created in Paris France by the French Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, back in the 1970. The kinetic Op-Art necklace was masterfully crafted in rich yellow gold of 18 karats with high polished finish. The design consists of five (5) independent round wires pendants, separate and graduated making concentric circles motifs in three dimensions. These circles are fitted with concealed hinges locks, which can be removed to convert the necklace with different patterns. The visual artistic aspect is achieved since the hanging circles slightly oscillate with the movement of the wearer, creating in turn the three-dimensional optical effect. This sculptural necklace was produced in a limited series of only nine pieces, making each piece to be unique. Country: Paris, France Period: Modernism, 1970. Edition: Number 5 of 9. Weight: 41.8 Grams, (26.80 Dwt). Size: Fit a neck up to 16 Inches, (40.64 Cm). Measurements: The dangle kinetic section is 89 mm by 42 mm (3.5 x 1.65 Inches) Hallmarks: Each piece is stamped with French national marks; the maker's mark Ste F-F with a clover, the mark of the eagle for the assay and warranty of the 18kt gold, the edition number out of 9 and signed as follows, "AGAM 5/9". Yaacov Agam He is a renowned sculptor. He was born in Mandate Palestine, and lived there until 1949, the year after the establishment of the State of Israel. While living in Mandate Palestine, Agam studied in Jerusalem at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Following his 1949 move to Switzerland, he studied at Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule and the Zurich University. He moved to Paris in 1951. Agam is considered one of the founders of kinetic art. Kinetic artwork typically contains moving elements and rely on motion provided by natural forces, motors, or human intervention to achieve their visual effects. In a twist on the classic model of kinetic art, Agam's sculpture Peaceful Communication with the World is painted in such a way that children's growth will change how the work appears to them as they get taller. In a more traditional vein, his Fire and Water Fountain uses mechanically driven parts to help achieve the visual effects. Agam works almost entirely in sculpture, with many of the sculptures on a massive scale. One of his more famous pieces called Hanukkah Menorah is in New York City, stands 32 feet high, and can function as a menorah. His sculptures appear in numerous cities around the world, including Jerusalem, Paris, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, and the Bahamas. He has held exhibitions and retrospectives at both museums and galleries. His work has been shown in retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Musee National d'art Moderne in Paris, and the Tel Aviv Museum. His solo exhibitions have appeared at Marlborough-Gerson Gallery in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico, and the Jewish Museum in New York. In addition to artistic work, Agam routinely involves himself in art education, with lectures delivered at universities and conventions. In 1968, he served as a guest lecturer at Harvard University, where he taught a course on visual communication. Some of his educational ideas for enhancing the cognitive and creative skills of children have been implemented in Israel. The artist currently lives and works in Paris and Tel Aviv. The design consists of large round wires pendant of nine (9) separate and graduated pieces making concentric circles motifs in three dimensions. These circles are fitted with concealed hinged locks, which can be removed to convert the necklace with different patterns. The visual artistic aspect is achieved since the hanging circles oscillate slightly with the movement of the user, creating in turn the three-dimensional optical effect. This sculptural necklace was produced in a limited series of only nine pieces, making each piece to be unique. Country: Paris, France Period: Modernism, 1970. Edition: Number 8 of 9. Weight: 77.75 Grams, (49.85 Dwt). Size: Fit a neck up to 16 Inches, (40.64 Cm). Measurements: The dangle kinetic section is 127 mm by 62 mm (5 x 2.45 Inches) Hallmarks: Each piece is stamped with French national marks; the maker's mark Ste F-F with a clover, the mark of the eagle for the assay and warranty of the 18kt gold, the edition number out of 9 and signed as follows, "AGAM 8/9".
