Hallet’s artistic repertoire was as expansive as it was breathtaking. He wielded his brush with mastery in a multitude of genres, creating enchanting landscapes, bustling cityscapes, serene garden views, captivating marine scenes, evocative genre depictions, and intimate portraits that breathed life onto his canvases. The journey of André Hallet’s artistry began under the tutelage and guidance of R. Heintz. He honed his craft further at the Academy in Liege. It was in the South of France that Hallet discovered the transcendent allure of light and the sun, infusing his work with a cheerful and impressionistic burst of color. The vibrant hues of his palette mirrored the radiant landscapes he encountered in Flanders and the Mediterranean, from the sun-kissed shores of Southern France to the picturesque vistas of Italy. In 1920, Hallet embarked on a new chapter, working in the enchanting city of Bruges before ultimately settling in Leuven. Each location left its mark on his art, contributing to the rich tapestry of his creative journey. A turning point in Hallet’s life came in 1934 when the Belgian government sent him to Congo. Later, in 1947, he found his home on the shores of Lake Kivu in Kisenyi, present-day Rwanda. It was here that he would spend the remainder of his life, captivated by the mesmerizing beauty of the African landscape. He passed away in 1959, leaving a lasting legacy. During his time in Africa, Hallet forged a deep connection with Tutsi king Mwambi Matura III of Ruanda-Burundi. He was a Belgian impressionist painter of landscapes, marines, harbour scenes, architectures, interiors, city and canal views, portraits and figures. He was also a watercolourist. Gilsoul studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts with the famed master teachers and artists François Courtens (1854 – 1895) and Louis Artan (1837 – 1890). In 1882 he won his first prize at the Academy and in 1884 debuted at the Brussels Salon. He studied also at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he won a prize (1885-1890). Gilsoul was member of the group ‘Voorwaerts’ in 1891. He was awarded a silver medal at the Paris World Fair in 1900. In the same year, King Leopold II commissioned several compositions for his yacht “Alberta” and knighted him to the Order of King of the Belgians. The painter stayed from 1911 in Paris, where he often painted the Versailles region, also worked and lived for some time in Brittany. He had several exhibitions in France. He lived in Bruges, and he was a Belgian painter and one of important Bruges School artists. His brother Frans Van der Smissen (1894-1964) was a sculptor. Leo was a painter of town views, sturdy of trees, landscapes, church interiors, still lifes, marines, interiors, portraits, and some nudes. He acts as a colourist, who practices sobriety. His preference, woodland scenes, a genre in which he has climbed to a solid refinement, particularly specific are the depiction of the tree trunks. His works, brushed concisely and boldly, betray a strong hand that bends the colour ranges to his will and he can adapt to all kinds of subjects. Leo studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts (1913 – 1919) with master teacher and artist Flori Van Acker and won several first prizes there. He studied also at Ghent Academy of Fine Arts (1920 – 1921) with master teachers Godron and Karel Tremerie and later at Dendermonde Academy of Fine Arts (1923 – 1924). He also painted in watercolour and fresco techniques. In 1885, Volcker was a student of famed Norwegian realist painter Hans Fredrik Gude (1825 – 1903) at the Berlin Academy. His teacher encouraged him to travel to Scandinavia. During his study trips, he made landscape paintings of Scandinavian mountain and lakes, that brought him later great recognition. In 1891, he led his own plein air painting school. The most famous pupils were german sculptor and painter Margarethe Haeffner (1884 – 1977) and the painter Oskar Moll (1875 – 1947). With his Berlin friend painter Walter Leistikow (1865 – 1908), who was also a pupil of Gude, he shared an admiration for Max Liebermann (1847 – 1935). His acquaintance with Liebermann’s paintings furthered his stylistic development to an Impressionism. In 1894 he lived in Munich and moved to Wiesbaden in 1899, where he was active as a contemporary artist and as a member of the Art Societies, presenting Max Liebermann, Fritz Overbeck or Lovis Corinth, among others. His father was a goldsmith. In 1931 he got married and went to live in the Biezenstraat. He died on February 12, 1989. He was a painter, restorer of paintings and copyist of Flemish Primitives. In 1912 he entered the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts with director Flori Van Acker as his teacher and famed artist. In 1926 the Municipal Council of Bruges appointed him as a teacher at the Bruges Academy. He would remain in this position until 1966, the year he retired. He was a Belgian painter of portraits, still lifes, genre paintings, nudes and landscapes. He made decorative paintings to fit into private homes. Richir mainly painted portraits. His clients usually belonged to the higher circles. He portrayed amongst others King Albert and Queen Elisabeth, Cardinal Mercier and Countess d’Oultremont. Less known are the landscape paintings he made Limburg and Kempen, where he regularly stayed with befriended artist Emile Van Doren (1865 – 1949). Herman Richir first studied at the Sint-Joost-ten-Node Academy with Gustave Biot and Charles Hermans, continued his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1884-1889) with the master teacher and artist Jean-Francois Portaels (1818 – 1895).
