Images from particle physics, satellite photography, biotechnology, radiology, geological survey maps, have all served as influences on Richards' work. Her paintings, prints, and drawings relate to the human need to construct our experiences in nature using systems of design and technology. The maps become metaphors for inner journeys, and are also meant to suggest playful and whimsical approaches to the usually serious function of diagrams.
