Finlandais, 1890-1973
Paavo Tynell était un designer industriel, connu comme le grand pionnier de l'éclairage finlandais design et affectueusement surnommé "l'homme qui a illuminé la Finlande". Tynell a été l'un des fondateurs et concepteurs en chef de Taito Oy - le premier producteur industriel de lampes et autres appareils d'éclairage en Finlande. Avec l'innovation de l'électricité au début du 20e siècle, Taito Oy et Tynell ont développé la réflexion et la fabrication de solutions d'éclairage modernes en Europe et à l'étranger.
Tynell s'est fait connaître dans les années 1930 et 1940, au cours desquelles il a collaboré avec certains des architectes finlandais les plus renommés, Alvar Aalto étant le plus notable d'entre eux. Travaillant à l'intégration de l'éclairage artificiel dans les environnements modernes, la société Taito Oy a produit des luminaires pour tous les grands projets de Aalto, y compris le Paimio Sanatorium et la Viipuri Library.
Tynell a été particulièrement salué pour son implication dans la Finland House, un atelier de design à New York qui présentait le travail de designers finlandais et d'artisans. Ses élégants designs en laiton ont connu un succès immédiat en Amérique du Nord, et il a commencé à créer des designs d'éclairage pour la prestigieuse société américaine Lightolier.
Maître artisan, les designs de Tynell étaient dérivés d'une esthétique traditionnelle avec une sensibilité moderne, mélangée à une utilisation extensive de laiton perforé et poli. Marquées par la délicatesse et la douceur, ses formes les plus célèbres dans l'éclairage font écho aux structures de la nature; il a adroitement créé des formes sculpturales rappelant les branches des arbres, les flocons de neige tourbillonnants et les coquillages.
