Robert Motherwell Art
Américain, 1915-1991
Le nom du peintre, graveur et écrivain Robert Motherwell (1915-91) est souvent considéré comme synonyme de l'École de New York, dont il a inventé le nom. Motherwell était le plus jeune de ce groupe d'expressionnistes abstraits travaillant dans art, la danse, la poésie et la musique dans le New York des années 1950 et 1960, qui comprenait Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Helen Frankenthaler et Mark Rothko.
Né à Aberdeen, dans l'État de Washington, en 1915, Motherwell a peut-être reçu l'éducation la plus large et la meilleure de toute la coterie de l'école de New York, avec une formation approfondie en philosophie, en littérature et en histoire de l'art. Il a obtenu un BA en philosophie en 1937 à l'université de Stanford et préparait un doctorat en la matière à Harvard lorsqu'il a interrompu ses études pour un voyage d'un an en Europe, où il est tombé amoureux du modernisme européen.
À son retour, en 1940, il s'inscrit à Columbia pour étudier l'histoire de l'art. C'est là qu'il rencontre un groupe de surréalistes parisiens exilés , une rencontre qui influencera son style. Motherwell a commencé à intégrer l'idée d'"automatisme" - des gestes non médiatisés qui reflètent des impulsions psychologiques plus profondes - dans son travail, , pionnier d'une nouvelle forme d'expressionnisme abstrait qui en est venu à caractériser l'école de New York.
Des œuvres comme Beside the Sea no. 45, une acrylique sur toile, et la lithographie de 1966 New York International illustrent l'utilisation par Motherwell de formes simples dans des couleurs audacieusement contrastées, exécutées par des traits rapides et gestuels qui évoquent parfois des figures, suggérant une narration latente malgré leur abstraction évidente.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Motherwell a enseigné la peinture au Hunter College, à New York, et au Black Mountain College, en Caroline du Nord, où son travail a influencé des artistes tels que Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg et Kenneth Noland. Son influence en tant que l'un des pères fondateurs de l'expressionnisme abstrait américain reste profonde.
