Islamic brass metalwork is an intricate and beautiful form of art that originated in the Islamic world. It encompasses a wide range of decorative objects made from brass or other metals such as copper, bronze, and silver. Brass trays, in particular, are highly regarded for their craftsmanship and intricate designs.
Islamic brass metalwork has a rich history that dates back to the early Islamic period, with its roots in the metalworking traditions of ancient civilizations such as the Persians, Greeks, and Romans. However, Islamic artisans developed their own unique styles and techniques, blending elements from various cultures and creating distinctive motifs that reflected Islamic aesthetics and religious beliefs.
The process of creating brass trays involves several steps, each requiring specialized skills. Here is a general overview of the traditional techniques involved:
1) Design: A skilled artist or calligrapher creates the design for the brass object. Islamic brass metalwork often incorporates intricate geometric patterns, arabesques, floral motifs, and calligraphy inspired by Quranic verses or poetry.
2) Metalworking: The object is typically made from a sheet of brass or another metal. The metal is cut into the desired shape and then hammered or pressed to create the object. Traditional techniques such as repoussé (hammering from the reverse side) or chasing (hammering on the front side) may be employed to shape the metal.
3) Engraving: The surface of the metal is often decorated with intricate engravings or etchings. Skilled artisans use chisels, gravers, or other specialized tools to create fine details and elaborate patterns.
4) Filigree and Inlay: Some brass trays feature additional decorative elements such as filigree or inlay work. Filigree involves shaping thin wires of brass into delicate patterns and soldering them onto the tray's surface. Inlay work, on the other hand, involves embedding contrasting materials such as silver or copper into the brass, creating intricate designs.
5) Surface Treatment: After the main decorative work is complete, the tray may undergo surface treatments to enhance its appearance. This can include processes like polishing, buffing, or applying various chemical patinas to create an aged or oxidized effect.
While this bowl has certainly witnessed the passage of time, it remains in remarkably good condition, with only minor signs of age that add character to its appearance. The patina on the brass enhances its antique allure, making it a truly authentic and captivating collectible.
Arabic Calligraphy: The Arabic writing on the bowl is a work of art in itself. The calligraphy showcases the mastery of the scribe's hand, with flowing curves and intricate details that form an elegant script. The script may include Quranic verses, blessings, or poetic verses, depending on the bowl's origin and purpose. The inscriptions are not only visually striking but also carry profound meaning, making this bowl a beautiful representation of Islamic heritage.
Intricate Patterns: In addition to the Arabic calligraphy, the bowl features intricate geometric patterns and motifs that further enhance its visual appeal. These patterns are a hallmark of Islamic art and reflect the mathematical precision and artistic creativity that defined Islamic craftsmanship.

Japanese Wireless Cloisonné Serving Tray Meiji After Namikawa Sosuke
Located in Long Island City, NY
A rare 19th Century Japanese copper serving tray with cloisonne enamel design. The central part of the tray depicts a wireless cloisonne picture, a coastal landscape view with a full moon. The hieroglyphical signature of the artist is in the lower right. The rims and the backside are decorated with floral ornaments. Blue and black color palette. Collectible Oriental Decor And Applied Arts For Interior Design.
Namikawa Sosuke (1847–1910) was a Japanese cloisonné artist,[1] known for innovations that developed cloisonné enamel into an artistic medium sharing many features with paintings.[2][3] He and Namikawa Yasuyuki (no relation)[notes 1] were the most famous cloisonné artists of the 1890 to 1910 period, known as the "golden age" of Japanese enamels.[1] Around 1880 he set up and ran the Tokyo branch of the Nagoya Cloisonné Company.[1] He exhibited his artworks at national and international expositions, where he took an organising role.[2] He was recognised as an Imperial Household Artist and created art works for imperial residences. He sometimes signed his works with the character sakigake (Pioneer)
the art work is based off a art work done by Sesshu Toyo
Sesshu Toyo (?? ??, c. 1420 – August 26, 1506), also known simply as Sesshu (??), was a Japanese Zen monk and painter who is considered a great master of Japanese ink painting. Initially inspired by Chinese landscapes, Sesshu's work holds a distinctively Japanese style that reflects Zen Buddhist aesthetics.[1] His prominent work captured images of landscapes, portraits, and birds and flowers paintings, infused with Zen Buddhist beliefs, flattened perspective, and emphatic lines.[2]
Sesshu was born into the samurai Oda family (???) and trained at Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan, as a Zen monk.[1] From his early childhood, Sesshu showed a talent for painting and eventually became widely revered throughout Japan as a wise, reputable Zen scholar, and the greatest painter priest of Zen-Shu.[3]
Sesshu worked in a painting atelier whilst training under Tensho Shubun (c. 1418–1463). But upon visiting China, his work betook a distinctive Chinese influence, merging Japanese and Chinese styles to develop his individualistic style of Zen paintings.[3] Sesshu's influence on painting was so wide that many schools of art appointed him their founder.[4] Sesshu's most acclaimed works are Winter Landscape (c. 1470s), Birds and Flowers (1420–1506) and Four Landscape Scrolls...

Asian Antique Brass Betel Nut Pandan Box with Lid, Northern India 19th C.
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
Asian antique Beaten Brass Betel Nut Pandan Box, Northern India.
Beautiful antique hand hammered Asian round brass betel with a lid and delicate engravings with floral design handle hand crafted by skilled artisans from Northern India.
Indian Beaten Copper Betel Nut Pandan Box with hand hammered beaten floral and incised decoration used to store betel leaf, lime, tobacco and the nut from the areca palm. This mixture of ingredients when prepared and placed in the mouth for long periods gives the user a mild aphrodisiac effect.
The preparation of the betel nut with lime stored in ornate boxes with several smaller internal containers was popular all over Asia and is still a common practice in Myanmar and India and among the hill tribes of many S. E. Asian countries.
Engraved with intricate designs on the lid which has a carved floral design handle and a latch in front for opening or closing the box and for safekeeping.
Nicely hand-hammered with intricate details.
Please check photo #5, there is about 1 inch damage area on the side of the box.
Museum quality Asian Hand-hammered decorative Islamic brass folk art metalwork collector treasure box.
Measures: Diameter 7 in. x Height 4 in.
The box has a rich, deep brown patina.
Quality of Mughal style. A pandan was used to store the pan, or betel quid after it had been stuffed and rolled ready to eat, rather than for the individual ingredients. The chewing of betel is an ancient Asian tradition comparable to tobacco in the western world. Betel consists of three main ingredients: the areca nut, betel leaf and lime paste. Betel was, and still is enormously popular throughout Asia and plays a major role in the entertaining of guests, in courtship and marriage, and in the traditional etiquette of the royal courts, where it often forms part of the state regalia.[1] Research on several pandan boxes has been published by Zebrowski.[2]

19th-Century Tibetan Copper and Brass Ritual Vessel with Applied Ornamentation
Located in Middleburg, VA
A richly detailed 19th-century Tibetan ritual vessel, hand-forged from copper and embellished with applied repousse and engraved brass medallions, geometric plaques, and symbolic mounts. Raised on three splayed feet, this bulbous, high-necked vessel features a domed body adorned with a dense array of ritual and decorative appliques, including stylized floral medallions, abstract symbols, and keyhole-like forms that reference tantric iconography.
The vessel's expressive form is punctuated by three protruding spouts and retains its original arched swing handle with pierced brass finials. Meticulously decorated in traditional metalworking techniques, the surface patina reveals a rich, warm interplay between the copper ground and the golden brass overlay. An aesthetic that speaks to both spiritual function and ornamental sophistication.
Likely used in ceremonial or domestic rituals, this vessel stands as a worthy testament to Tibetan artisanship and Buddhist ritual culture. A compelling piece for collectors of Himalayan antiques...
