About Mark Lissauer:
Mark Lissauer spent forty years travelling abroad for months at a time collecting ethnographic artefacts primarily from New Guinea and the islands of the West Pacific, and from Asia and Himalayan countries. Fluent in five languages and having in the course of business travelled to more than forty countries, Mark is well-known to museums and art-collectors around the world for his long career and his interesting and diverse collection of rare ethnographic material.
Mark knows the origin and symbolism of each piece. Through extensive research and more than ninety trips around the globe, Mark familiarised himself with the traditions of the various cultures he visited in order to understand the meaning of each object to its region and tribe. His home has a specialist library and several rooms are filled with tribal carvings, textiles and ethnographica.
He acquired his first tribal piece in 1948 during a business trip to Milne Bay, New Guinea, and has since documented the acquisition of some 35,000 items. Several thousands of these have been sold to important private collections and museums worldwide, including the Rockefeller Museum, the British Museum and the Musée National des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie, now incorporated into the Louvre Museum.

It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 18th September 2008. Lot No. 74.
Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
This sale was titled “Modern & Contemporary Indian Art”.
The Lot consisted of a Group of 3 Watercolors by Babu Xavier, Paresh Maity and Ranjit Kurmi. (b.1960, b.1965, b.1970) Three Untitled Works.
Signed and dated ‘Paresh Maity ’02 lower right, watercolor and ink on paper. …. 5.6 x 3.6 (14 x 9 cm)”.
Exhibited: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Modern Indian Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, April 8 – June 11 2006.
The Provenance is given as: “Property of Private Maryland Collectors”.
The 3 watercolors carried an Auction estimate of USD 3,000 to USD 4,000 and Sold for USD 4,000 (not including Buyers Premium).
Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $7,000 in today’s value.
We have this watercolor by Paresh Maity and (listed separately) the Babu Xavier watercolor, but not the Ranjit Kurmi watercolor.
As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label.
It has substantially increased in value over the years as a HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece from an exhibited and highly collected Modern Indian Master painter.

Each statue is hand carved as a male Hindu four armed temple guard, the guards holding a mace (Gada) and one hand on a dagger (Katar), another hand holding a lotus flower to represent spiritual enlightenment. Each guard stands crossed legged on a plinth decorated with an elephant, both statues retaining old and yet brightly colored polychromed decoration, the statues are approximately 3/4 lifesize. They are a true pair facing each other and would have flanked either side of the temple door entrance, they are large and very heavy, each figure weighs about 300lbs. An Indian antique carved wooden hand noodle press from the 19th century, with elephant motif. Created in India during the 19th century, this wooden piece was originally used to hand make noodles. Showcasing a vice press, the body is adorned with a carved elephant whose head and behind expand from a central square. This container is where the dough was placed and the vice part would press it into noodles. The elephant head is carved with subtle motifs, such as a jewel on the forehead. The trunk is tucked in.
