Qing Dynasty Painting of a Royalty Related Couple with Dragon Motifs
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese late Qing Dynasty period framed painting from the early 20th century of a royalty related couple with dragon motifs painted on a linen canvas. Created in China during the late Qing Dynasty in the early years of the 20th century, this custom framed painting depicts a couple wearing either a red (a symbol of luck in China) or green robe. The depiction of dragons relates them to the Imperial family, but having four claws and not five as codified, the couple is likely part of the royal family, not the Imperial couple themselves. Accented with typical motifs such as bats, flaming pearls and rain-filled clouds, the robes are filled with symbols. Wearing ornate headdresses, the couple is sitting on elegant chairs. Set inside custom made frames, the paintings show great signs of age. While the entire piece measures 40.5"W x 1"D x 53"H, the painting itself is 36.5"W x 49". With its vivid colors and interesting subject, this Chinese Qing Dynasty painting...

Pair of Antique Singa Sculptures, Batak Tribe Sumatra, Early 20th Century

Mounted on custom black-painted metal stands, this striking pair of antique Singa sculptures originates from the Batak tribe of Sumatra. Each piece is carved from a single block of wood and features the iconic protective Singa motif, a mythical creature often used in Batak architecture to ward off evil spirits. The sculptures showcase wonderful polychrome detailing, with traces of natural pigments still visible, adding depth and character to the intricately carved surfaces. The weathered patina, fading, and age-related wear and tear speak to their authenticity and long history of use, possibly as architectural or ritual elements. Together, these pieces present a rare opportunity to own a significant example of Batak tribal...

Chinese Famille Rose Fish Bowl with Peach Banquet, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Every inch of this fantastic Chinese fish bowl is adorned with hand-painted overglaze enamels, a manner of porcelain decorating known as famille rose. Rendered in pastel shades and gilded accents, famille rose porcelain was popular in the late Qing dynasty (1648-1911) as an export style that melded the technical virtuosity of imperial porcelain with fanciful color palettes that met Western tastes. Beautifully painted with intricate detail and soft shading, the enameled fish bowl depicts the Eight Immortals of Taoist mythology journeying to attend the peach banquet of the Queen Mother of the West. Considered the goddess of longevity, this heavenly deity holds a banquet every 6,000 years to share her peaches of immortality, a myth popularized in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West. The Eight Immortals each ride a mythical beast towards the Queen's mountain palace, surrounded by cranes and spotted deer for further blessings of longevity. The interior of the bowl is decorated as well, enameled with goldfish and underwater flora. Today, we love using a bowl of this scale as an indoor fish pond...

Its roots can be traced back 4500 years to the ancient city of Mohenjodaro in the Indus Valley Civilization. The name Dokra or Dhokra was used to indicate a group of craftsmen of nomadic type from the Dhokra Damar tribe, scattered over the regions of Bengal, Orisa and Madhya Pradash, whose wares were identified by their beautifully shaped and decorated metal products.
