This unusually-shaped carpet is known as a "makden" and was originally used by a nomadic traveler as an artful covering for his horse. Placed between the saddle and the horse, the makden cushioned the rigid saddle and kept the horse warm in cold climates. A fine and impressive antique Chinese Export Silver bowl; an addition to our Chinese/Asian silverware collection
This impressive Chinese Export Silver (CES) bowl has a plain circular form onto a plain collet foot.
The body of this antique Chinese bowl is embellished with two embossed and chased traditional oriental undulating dragons amidst cloud designs, all on a matte background.
The decoration to the body incorporates a vacant circular cartouche.
The upper rim of this impressive CES bowl is encircled with an applied thread decorated border.
The hallmarks struck to the underside of this fine bowl include:
Maker's mark: T&Co (Taylor & Co*)
Artisan workshop mark: REN XIN 仁信 (Canton)
This impressive bowl has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 900 standard silver.
* Taylor & Co were a retail store but acted as agents, and were known for their locations in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tianjin. We are grateful to Adrien von Ferscht for his help in identifying this exceptional antique piece.
Condition
This antique Chinese bowl is a very good gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition, in keeping with age.
The chased and embossed decoration is all very sharp.
The CES hallmarks struck to the underside of the bowl are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique Chinese silverware...

Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck.
This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. This fine antique Indian silver card case has a shaped rectangular form.
The anterior surface of this case is embellished with a fine and impressive chased decorated panel depicting a scene with four characters in a boat above a shaped cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved initials ‘EH’.
The reverse surface is ornamented with a chased decorated panel illustrating a male and female character in period Asian dress clasping each other under a tree canopy.
The shaped sides and border to both the anterior and reverse surfaces are plain and unembellished.

ABOUT MEIJI PERIOD
The Meiji Era was the 44-year period of Japan's history from 1868 to 1912 when the country was under the rule of the great Emperor Mutsuhito. Also called the Meiji Emperor, he was the first ruler of Japan to wield actual political power in centuries.
