China Extra Large Natural Marble Stone "Painting" Magnificent Mountain Peak
Located in South Burlington, VT
This Chinese extraordinary natural marble stone painting of a mountain range in green and white colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua. It is a huge monumental masterwork of nature. Totally natural. Dimensions: Hardwood frame: 62.5 inches tall and 88 inches length Site: 54.5 inches tall and 80 inches length This thin marble stone painting is approximately 3/8 inch thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing a unique, incredible pattern in soft green and white colors. This unique work of art was from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone. This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve. History of Green Flower dream stone paintings: “Green Flower” dream stone paintings known in China as Shui Mo or Chinese painting stone, were cut from stone found on Shuang Yang mountain in Dali moutains Captivating compositions, they might remind us of a long string of rugged mountain caps from a distance. These dream stones are cut from a scarce regional stone yielding notoriously “fuzzy” detailed paintings. To find examples possessing clear, contrasting detail like this one is indeed a rare find. Fine stone paintings like this example are rare as access to and availability of resource material diminishes. After a thin coating of wax is carefully applied to its surface to protect and reveal its beautiful subtle colors, this stone painting is signed upper right position with poetic verse and seal of an artisan who describes its majestic beauty as Provenance: Private Chinese collection, Yunnan, China. Cast Iron Owl Garden Lantern, Japan, Mid 20th Century
Located in London, GB
A delightful, whimsical and rare cast iron Japanese garden lantern in the shape of an owl, made in Japan c. 1950. With pointed ears, a charming face and a fantastic aged surface, it is the perfect addition to any garden, although it could equally be used indoors. The beautiful red patina gives a dramatic russet glow to the candlelight within, which then shines through the perforated form of the owl to very atmospheric effect. The owl can either stand independently, or can also be hung using the loop above the head. It is very solid with a generous weight to withstand the elements if placed outside. An excellent example of a cast iron owl lantern...

Chinese Ming Iron Bell with Dragon Handle, c. 1600
Located in Chicago, IL
This monumental Ming-dynasty bell once pealed in a Chinese village, sounding out in celebration or giving notice of important events. Expertly forged, the cast-iron bell is detailed with characters in intricate relief, and its exaggerated scallop rim is traced with oversized rivets. Covered in scales and ending in expressive faces, the bell's handle is cast in the form of a two-headed hong dragon, thought to be the embodiment of a rainbow and thus visible only after rainfall. Frosted with snow or lit from within by flickering candles, this sculptural bell takes on a magical presence in the winter garden.

Chinese Full Moon Rice Millstone, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
This large stone disc was originally used in a provincial Chinese home as a heavy millstone for grinding rice and other grains into flour and meal. Hand-carved from solid granite to a round, full moon shape, the millstone has a highly textured surface chiseled with an orderly pattern of straight furrows. The opposite side is less worked, with a rougher, organic texture. We love placing millstones like this outdoors to add a stone element to a garden, whether used as an abstract sculpture, as a stepping stone or as the face of a bubbling water...
