Mid-Century Architectural Pottery "Double Cone" Planter by LaGardo Tackett
Located in St. Louis, MO
Mid-Century Modern Architectural Pottery sculptural "Double Cone" Planter by LaGardo Tackett , rarely seen double cone version with wider base than top in a white glaze. Provenance 1960s MCM building of the Odd Fellows Association Hall - St. Louis. It was used with sand for an ashtray , seen in photos 5 & 6. The 1960s MCM modification to an existing building was designed by architect William E. Duncan and demolished in the summer of 2020. Duncan not only selected these planters , the entire hall, had Saarinen , Eames, Nelson, Howard Miller and Nessen designs. The condition is good, only with minor scuffs, no chips and light staining to interior as seen in photos. Stamped Architectural Pottery made in the USA. When the planter is on its side, it reminds me of the famous brass drawer pull on Paul McCobb designed furniture. 19th Century Italian Renaissance Revival Carved Jardiniere Stand
Located in Forney, TX
A magnificent antique, circa 1880, Italian Renaissance Revival style jardinière with warm, rustic beautifully aged patina! (plant stand - indoor planter - conservatory or solarium garden box - flower display) Born in Italy in the late 19th century, most likely originating in the Veneto region of Northern Italy (Venetian), exquisitely hand-crafted in medieval Italian Renaissance style / Henry II taste, having a removable metal interior liner with handles, resting in the well-made rectangular case with stepped molded edge, over paneled frieze adorned in intricate hand carved plaquette and foliate scrolled rinceaux relief ornamentation, rising on urn-form turned column supports, atop large platform shelf base with conforming stepped molded edge further raised on bun feet with primitive inset casters. Dimensions: (approx) 22" High, 40" Wide, 17.5" Deep A wonderful example of functional art. In good original antique condition, it's srong, sturdy and structurally sound with rich patina over the whole. Substantial wear consistent with age and indicative of use. Nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality but only adds to the sophisticated character, European old world charm, elegant warmth and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over long periods of time. Presents well, retaining original antique character marks throughout. Distressed, worn, faded finish, with evidence of old water damages, age related splitting in the form of crack to one decorative panel, and scattered minor losses. Partial seized casters. Heavily oxidized patinated metal basin...

Antique and Vintage Planters and Jardinieres

Beautiful plants deserve beautiful homes. It’s time to introduce antique and vintage planters and jardinieres to your home’s interiors and outdoor garden area.

The word “jardiniere” has roots in French, but the appeal of these vessels is global. The popularity of jardinieres — ceramic pots intended for cut flowers or plants — quickly gained traction in the United States during the start of the 20th century, when you could find them in some middle- and upper-class American homes. Jardinieres had already been coveted goods overseas for at least a couple of centuries by then, as intricate planters crafted from Chinese porcelain or gilded-bronze versions from Japan could be found in the living rooms of wealthy Europeans.

Today, the love for planters and jardinieres knows no bounds. And whether you consider yourself a proper gardener or merely a doting plant parent, there is likely a use for a planter inside or in the lively outdoor space around your home.

Outside, a pair of marble and terracotta planters or cast-iron urns designed in the neoclassical style can add a stately touch to your landscape design while helping establish boundaries between the areas you’ve created for gardening and entertaining.

Bare corners in your living room or dining room can often be difficult to populate with furnishings that fit just so, and a planter can change that. While it’s possible to get maximal impact from minimalist pottery — an understated mid-century modern planter could deliver on that front — you might be pining for an on-trend planter with pizzazz. Look to an outwardly angular fiberglass design decked out in bright colors to give your blooms a run for their money, while mounted or vintage hanging vessels can serve as the frame for nature’s organic artwork, quite literally taking your gardening skills to the next level.

Browse a broad collection of antique and vintage planters and jardinieres on 1stDibs today.
