Folk Art Decorative Baskets
FOLK ART STYLE
Folk art is a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Antique, new and vintage folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, duck decoys, portraiture and paintings, carnival art and quilts.
Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.
Elsewhere, the vast range of work associated with Mexican folk art includes masks made by Mexican craftspeople for traditional celebrations and ceremonial dances. Mexican masks are part of the country’s folk-art traditions that go back thousands of years and play a role in festivals and theater.
Works in the folk art tradition are valuable because of the skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story.
During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.

Antique or vintage woven pie, picnic, or market basket features a traditional rectangular shape with reinforced rim, hinged lid, wooden shelf insert, and twin solid wood handles. The rim is formed by carved bent ash splints, and the lid is reinforced with carved solid wood elements. The handles and wooden trim on the lid add not only visual interest, but also structural stability and ease of use to the piece; the insert allows for the additional functionality.
The basket is in very good antique or vintage condition with beautiful, age-appropriate patina on wood; its convenient size and shape and sturdy construction allow it to be used both as a decor piece and as decorative storage.

A rare set of three antique wooden herring barrels (haringtonnen), originating from the Netherlands or Flanders, late 19th century. These charming folk art barrels were traditionally used in fish shops and village groceries to store and sell salted herring.
Each barrel is made of wooden staves bound with wooden hoops and comes with its original removable lid. Remnants of hand-painted inscriptions and price markings remain visible, including “18 centen den ½ kilo” (18 cents per half kilo), referring to the historical retail price of herring. The barrels show a rich patina and authentic wear consistent with use and age.
Such early shop fittings and objects of everyday folk culture are increasingly rare and today make wonderful decorative accents. Perfect for collectors of maritime antiques, rustic interiors, and antique kitchenalia.

Early Vintage Mattapoisett Basket, likely by Gladys Ellis, Mid 20th Century, a hand-crafted basket modeled after a Nantucket purse, having a flat oval "clamshell" lid hinged above an oval body, made of hand-stitched longleaf pine needles and raffia in braided and lace-like arrangements, with two braided raffia handles, a stitched hinge, and a silk lined interior, not signed. This is one of her very early baskets made before she started adding ivory tops and fixtures.
The basket remains in strong original condition with no discernible breaks to the weave. There may have once been a loop closure at one point.
