Asian Antique Brass Betel Nut Pandan Box with Lid, Northern India 19th C.
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
Asian antique Beaten Brass Betel Nut Pandan Box, Northern India. Beautiful antique hand hammered Asian round brass betel with a lid and delicate engravings with floral design handle hand crafted by skilled artisans from Northern India. Indian Beaten Copper Betel Nut Pandan Box with hand hammered beaten floral and incised decoration used to store betel leaf, lime, tobacco and the nut from the areca palm. This mixture of ingredients when prepared and placed in the mouth for long periods gives the user a mild aphrodisiac effect. The preparation of the betel nut with lime stored in ornate boxes with several smaller internal containers was popular all over Asia and is still a common practice in Myanmar and India and among the hill tribes of many S. E. Asian countries. Engraved with intricate designs on the lid which has a carved floral design handle and a latch in front for opening or closing the box and for safekeeping. Nicely hand-hammered with intricate details. Please check photo #5, there is about 1 inch damage area on the side of the box. Museum quality Asian Hand-hammered decorative Islamic brass folk art metalwork collector treasure box. Measures: Diameter 7 in. x Height 4 in. The box has a rich, deep brown patina. Quality of Mughal style. A pandan was used to store the pan, or betel quid after it had been stuffed and rolled ready to eat, rather than for the individual ingredients. The chewing of betel is an ancient Asian tradition comparable to tobacco in the western world. Betel consists of three main ingredients: the areca nut, betel leaf and lime paste. Betel was, and still is enormously popular throughout Asia and plays a major role in the entertaining of guests, in courtship and marriage, and in the traditional etiquette of the royal courts, where it often forms part of the state regalia.[1] Research on several pandan boxes has been published by Zebrowski.[2] Brownrigg, H. Betel Cutters...

French Majolica Camel-Form Lidded Box
Located in Downingtown, PA
An Exotic Cargo: A French Majolica Camel-Form Lidded Box, St. Amand, Circa 1870 This charming French majolica lidded box is a delightful example of the imaginative and naturalistic forms that characterized 19th-century majolica production. Crafted by the St. Amand pottery in circa 1870, the piece is a sculptural rendering of a seated camel, a subject that would have appealed to the era's fascination with exoticism and global trade. The camel is naturalistically colored and rests on a raised, mottled green ground, suggesting a desert landscape. The lid of the box is formed by the camel's loaded pack, which is meticulously detailed with a variety of goods. This top section is removable, revealing a square, hollow interior in a contrasting light blue glaze—a small, hidden surprise. The impressed mark "St Ad" on the base confirms its origin from the Saint-Amand-les-Eaux pottery. This pottery, which was active from the 17th century to 1920, was renowned for its high-quality, brightly colored tin-glazed earthenware, a technique known as faience in France. St. Amand's work, often featuring rich glazes and creative forms, was widely exported and highly sought after for both tableware and decorative objects. Majolica, with its vibrant glazes and playful designs, saw a resurgence in popularity in the mid-19th century, particularly in England and France. This camel-form box is a perfect example of how the pottery of this period moved beyond purely functional forms to create whimsical and narrative pieces. It reflects a world increasingly connected by trade and travel, where images of distant lands and their inhabitants entered the domestic sphere. This piece, from a private New York collection and with a provenance tracing to Jesse Davis Antiques...

Gilt Bronze and Sèvres Style Porcelain Louis XVI Style Casket on Stand
Located in London, GB
Gilt bronze and Sèvres style porcelain Louis XVI style casket on stand This magnificent Louis XVI style ormolu casket is supported by a mirror-topped table stand, which sits on four tapered, fluted legs connected by a curving X-form stretcher. In the centre of this stretcher is an ormolu urn decorated with rams heads, four hoof feet and birds on the top. The legs of the table are also ornately decorated with draped garlands and scrolled detailing. The apron is inset with Sèvres style porcelain plaques depicting scenes of cherubs and children in landscapes as well as decorative floral detailing, and is surmounted with laurel leaf mounts. The casket itself is of oval architectural form, and is set on fourteen small feet. It features further porcelain plaques depicting cherubs, musical instruments and a central oval portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette within a crowned gilt cartouche. Her portrait is flanked by two cherubs and is sat within a decorative royal blue border, matching the turquoise colored borders of the other plaques. The reverse of the casket is similarly decorated and features a painted plaque of her husband King Louis XVI. The plaques are separated by mounted ormolu columns decorated with crowns and draped laurel leaves, and each column is surmounted by floral crowns. Each curved side of the casket features an ormolu mask of a female figure, and the hinged lid is surmounted by two reclining female figures wearing draped dresses and holding a central crown. The casket opens at the lid to reveal a velvet interior. There is an inscription below the portrait of Marie Antoinette which spuriously reads ‘This casket formerly property of Marie Antoinette, presented to my beloved wife as souvenir of our European tour / Sept 8th 1886 / Louis L...
